My friends and I have had several Harry Potter themed parties.  Some are on release dates and other simply for no reason other than the love of HP.  I would love to hear about other parties and swap ideas, games, decorating techniques, costuming, recipes, etc!

My brother threw a Harry Potter birthday party for my niece - and my daughter desperately wants me to copy it for her.

Guests arrived via Platform 9 3/4 - which was two pieces of balsa wood painted to look like a brick wall and slid apart to allow the kids to slip through.

Then they got sorted - wore the Sorting Hat, while my brother hid in another room with a microphone and called out Houses for them all. Then they all received the appropriate House scarf (which my mom knitted).

Then they went outside to see Professor Sprout (my sister) who helped them plant something (not sure what, I wasn't there for that part). Then they came inside, got their fortunes read by Professor Trelawney (my mom). Then they had birthday cake (which had been sat on) and when that was done, their "plants" had sprouted into flower pots full of all kinds of candy.

Then they all pretty much ran around with fake wands pretending to cast spells on each other. It was a lot of fun.

I am trying to think of different games to do for my daughter's party. She really wants to play some sort of quidditch. Haven't figured that one out yet!

The latest party I hosted was just a couple of weeks ago.  I sent out acceptance letters to Hogwarts to each guest.  I redecorated my house with banners and many items like wizard chess board, potion bottles, a pensieve, cauldrons, school supplies, and class room supplies.  When the guests arrived, each "student" was sorted into a house by drawing a safty pin with a house color ribbon attached to it.  Throughout the night, your house was like your team and by winning or participating in activities you gained colored stones for your house hourglass (vases).  I had notice boards posted around the house with the class schdedule and locations.    We voted on several things including best muggle studies essay, best potion and best costume.  There was also a lot of food including cauldron cakes, chocolate frogs, Bertie Botts, Treacle Tarts, Pumpkin Pasties, and Butter Beer.

Classes:
Flying- We played indoor quidditch (too cold and snowy for outdoor)

Defense against the Dark Arts- Gilderoy Lockhart quiz

Muggle Studies- I had pictures of "do-nothing" muggle items such as a garden gnome, fuzzy dice, dashboard hula girl, rubber ducky and the students wrote essays about the use and function from a wizards point of view.

Care of Magical Creatures- Hagrid's Nifflers and bowtruckles had escaped so we had to find the gold and catch the bowtuckles before they went into the woods.  I hid galleons and bowtruckles (twigs) around the house.

Divination- we had fortune cookies and read books on dream interpretation and tarot cards

Arithmancy- students could figure out their number

Potions- create your own potion with ingredients and function

Herbology- In good weather we de-gnomed the garden (potatoes with googly eyes on them hidden around the yard)

Transfiguration- I used play-doh and we transfigured the clay into Harry Potter items.  Much like 3D pictionary or cranium

History of Magic- we discussed theories

There are still a few classes that I didn't plan (charms, astronomy, etc) and I would love to expand my existing classes.  There has got to be a way to use earmuffs for herbology!

If I may suggest something. I have theorized on how to play Muggle Quidditch on my campus quad, though I haven't tested it yet, with the snow and all. Buy hula-hoops, 6 if you want something actually like goal posts.  Post three on a post (a piece of wooden dowel, PCV pipe, etc) and stick them in the backyard at whatever height would be appropriate. Then, to make a quaffle deflate a soccer ball, punch in three sides, and spray paint it maroon. If you would like bludgers, foam balls painted black are a good idea, so no one gets hurt. The game would then be played with the kids throwing the quaffle to each other and trying to score by throwing it through the hula-hoop goal posts. The bludgers add an element of freeze tag, where if they get hit by one they have to stop and give the quaffle to the "beater" who hit them with the bludger. I haven't figured out how to incorporate a snitch into the game.

I have also hosted a party, awhile ago for the COS movie release. It wasn't nearly as elaborate as either of your parties as far as decorations go, but I thought the food was good.
We had serpent sandwiches made by buying frozen bread dough, thawing it out, then rolling it into a log shape and curving it to look like a snake shape. Then we used scissors to cut the dough at the top at an angle, making scales. We brushed it with an beat egg that had been dyed green with food dye so that when it baked it had a green tint to it. Before we served them we used olives to make eyes and a piece of tomato for the tongue.
Then for dessert we had broomstick cupcakes, which were really cute. Bake cupcakes of whatever your favorite flavor, then take two cupcakes and lay them together on their sides to make the twig end of the broom. Skewer them with a pretzel rod to make the broom stick. Cover the cupcakes with yellow frosting, and then using a plastic bag with a hole in the corner squeeze thin lines of frosting on to give it a textured look.
I'm considering hosting another party for the book release this July, but I'm not sure about my summer plans yet.

Maybe the person organising the game (ie parent ) could hide a small yellow/gold ball (ie painted golf or pingpong ball, with wings stuck on etc ) in the backyard before the game starts and the teams' seekers have to try and find the "snitch", before the other team finds it...

I invented a sort of Quidditch game about three years ago, for Summer Camp in Belgium with a bunch of kids between 8 and 9 years old... It was lots and lots of fun...
There are no beaters though, nor any bludgers...

It are actually 2 games going on at the same time. But first the preparation.
We hung 3 hula-hoops in the goals, we made sure they didn't turn around, used tape and stuff (LOTS of tape) so there were 3 hula-hoops in each goal.
A variation to this we used another time is simply 3 baskets on the floor on each side of the room. (when we played it indoors)...

Now the characters.

1 beater a team. He has to defend the "hoops".

1 seeker a team. This person is on the field, waiting for the Snitch.

3 chasers a team. They play with a regular ball (you could paint it red or something, but that's not necessary) and try to score by throwing it through the hoops.

Now, what is the Snitch? Well, we had something quite funny for this. There were three neutral people standing alongside the field. They wore special HP-caps and at a certain moment, one would cross the field. The seekers would chase after them, but when the "snitches" left the field again, the seekers couldn't catch them. It makes it easy to control the length of the game. You could play for an hour, or just for 10 minutes, depending on how often one of the neutral snitches would appear on the field.

I love these Muggle Quidditch ideas.  I will definitely be stealing some of them!

I've done one HP party, for the OotP book release, but it wasn't quite so elaborate.  We did make butterbeer and pumpkin juice, but neither were a big hit for us Muggles!  I'm going to look for some new recipes for the party I'm having this time around!

Cool stuff, Gingerkneazle.

The closest I've been to having a HP party was when my class went to a candy store which contained Bertie Bott's Ever Flavour Beans. A couple of people bought them and we all (well, almost all) discussed Harry Potter, while eating them.

I personally didn't have many, though. First of all, I can barely stand sugar-loaded candies. Second of all, I have a pretty weak stomach...

I love all the Quidditch game ideas!  The hoops made from pipes sounds fantastic!

I have played two versions of Quidditch.  The first one I tried was for indoors as I did not have a large enough yard for a proper game.  All four houses played against one another at the same time.  Each house selected a seeker.  Everyone else was handed a sheet with trivia questions on it.  Each question was worth 10 points.  I hid a snitch somewhere in my house (one time it was in my mailbox and the other time it was in the floo powder).  Of course, first person to find the snitch stopped the game and gained 150 points.

The other version I played was at a friend of mine's house.  She had a large yard in the woods.  Before we arrived she hid the snitch in the yard.  There were ladders with hula hoops attached to them with C-clamps (we kept having time-outs to fix hoops that fell down, though).  Players were selected from each team.  1 seeker, 1 keeper, 2 beaters, and 3 chasers (It just happened to work out this way! )  The beaters used soft bludgers and could "tag" any other player except other beaters.  Once hit, you were frozen and had to be tagged by your own team beater to unfreeze.  The chasers were allowed 3 steps if in the possession of the quaffle before they had to pass it (to promote teamwork).  The keepers used a broom to stop the quaffle from going through the hoop.  (This worked well until one of the brooms disintegrated into a million twigs! )  When the seeker caught the snitch, the game stopped.  Very, very fun.  Even for those of us who were not all that athletic.  There's even been talk of starting a Quidditch league!
