I'm a huge Potter fan, and my husband and oldest son have read the first 6 books together. Son would like to have a Potter party for his 9th bday. Seems there aren't many recent posts for that here. I've checked birthdaypartyideas.com, which has a few good things, but quite often they are written by those who don't know the books as well. Just wondering if there are any great ideas from the real fans here! His bday is in mid-May, so before the next movie & book. Don't know how much movie merchandise will be out by then. We picked up a few things at after-Halloween sales that I thought might be helpful. I have a "Flufffy" rubbery statue (myabe a foot & a half tall), a few plastic cauldrons, a "forbidden forest" backdrop, a huge "Aragon," and some more things I can't think of off the top of my head. Haven't quite decided how to incorporate them into the party. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I posted this in your other b/day party thread, but I'll put it here too...
You could try Potterparties.com
It was originally set up as a site for parties for the HBP book release, but they do have some very good party ideas - and they have links to other sites with HP themed ideas!
ETA: And I just noticed NickTLC has edited the other thread so here is the link
Hope the party goes well!

You might want to try the Potter Parties subsection in TLC's Harry Potter Crafts section. And for food, go to the food subsection.
A lot of the stuff there is taken from the Potter Parties website, but we have added new things there as well, and sorted things a little differently in the hopes of making it easier for everyone to find things. There are also threads in the Harry Potter Crafts section of the forum for each activity, food, etc. mentionned on TLC, so you can go there for advice on what to do, etc.
Good luck on your party! I'm sure your son will enjoy it a lot.
If I remember correctly, acceptance letters are signed by Minerva McGonagall in the books. Hagrid then writes to Dumbledore to confirm Harry has received his letter, but it's McGonagall signing the letter as Deputy Headmistress I think.
In any case, I believe it would be acceptable to have them signed by Dumbledore if you're doing a pre-HBP party, but if you're opting for a post-HBP party, I'd go with Minerva McGonagall, Headmistress (or Deputy Headmistress, as you wish!). After all, Harry does say in the book that he realises she had been Deputy Headmistress, and supposed she was now Headmistress.

I see a lot of people asking about Harry Potter birthday parties for kids. We had one last year for my daughter Kristin when she turned 10. It was held at a local rollerrink which rents out the hall for parties. I have lots of pictures of the costumes and props but I can't figure out how to post them online, but if anyone wants to see them, I can send them by email. I wanted to give you some ideas that we used at our party, which turned out really good.
First off I made invitations on the computer. I found a Harry Potter font and typed up what looked like an invitation to Hogwarts. I printed it out on off white paper, got some antiquing powder and rubbed it on the invites, ripped edges of the paper to make it look old, then rolled them up and tied them with green ribbon. We asked kids to dress in proper attire if they could and offered a prize to Best Dressed student. The kids were pretty excited about the invites. We had 4 of them come dressed up.
The party went so well, it was awesome. The kids loved it. I was worried about running out of stuff to do and it was the opposite. The party was only 2 hours but we really could have used 3. We rushed through cake and presents in the last 15 minutes.
We had a CD of music playing when they all arrived that had the Hogwarts March playing. I started with giving the kids who didn't come dressed up black robes to wear, if they wanted, and they all did. I got robes all kinds of places. This was right after Halloween so we got clearance robes at dollar stores, black graduation gowns at thrift stores. It really got them all into the mood when they were all dressed up. Then we called each child up by name and sorted the kids into Slytherin and Gryffindor houses. Luckily we had an even # of kids. I had a paper sorting hat for them to wear and they chose their badges out of a cauldron. The badges were printed house badges from online, laminated, with a hole punched into them made into necklaces. Then they each got a glow bracelet in their house colors so we could see them in the gym, which was a bit darker.
After that they chose numbers out of a hat which corresponded to a wand. The wands were made out of dowels with formed tips and then all notched out differently, and stained and/or painted different. No two alike. We told them all the wand would chose them.
The first game in "class" was a word search game. Find the Harrys that I found online. The only word to find was Harry. The kid who found the most in the search won 5 points for their house. I gave them each a pen with a feather taped to the end of it so it looked like a quill pen. They thought those were cool. The teams tied on that one. 5 points each.
Then we went into the gym for Quidditch. We played the Harry Potter Theme music for them while in there. Two teams lined up with small witch brooms and beanie snitches. We had traffic cones and we had them weave in and out of the cones pushing the snitches with the broom back and forth in the gym handing off to the next person in line. The kids were SO funny to watch on that game. They all took it so seriously and were yelling and screaming for their teammates. I really liked that one. Slytherin won that one. So they were 5 points ahead.
Then we had a spoon tied to a ball of waxy twine. They lined up side by side and had to put the spoon down their robes and out the bottom then pass to the next person. That was kinda fun. The spoon got stuck in a few kids robes. Gryffindor won that one and since that tied it up I stopped doing points after that. ;)
Next we went back to the room we started and I gave them Bertie Botts jelly beans for a bean tasting contest. . Just to see if they could guess the flavors. The first one we gave out was earthworm. Those who never heard of Bertie Botts soon found out these were no ordinary jelly beans. Then we gave out boogers next. We went around after and everyone wanted to try a bunch of them. Those were a big hit. One girl took one home to her older sister and told her it was lemon. It was vomit. LOL Even the parents were trying them as they picked their kids up. Those were the hit of the party.
We were lucky it was right after Halloween because alot of the stuff was on clearance sale. Kids robes, glow bracelets, glow sticks for goodie bags, candy all really cheap. I was dressed as McGonagall, we had Dumbledore, Mad Eye Moody, Rita Skeeter and Professor Trelawney.
My sister decided two days before she wanted to dress up. I asked her if she could be Professor Trelawney. She had a dress and jewelry but not the glasses. And of course those are the main thing for her, like Mad Eye Moody. It was too late to buy them anywhere.I was so stressed about her getting those darn glasses. Finally we figured it out. We got small magnifying glasses, popped the glass out and superglued the circles from those to a pair of regular large framed cheap glasses (that we had popped the plastic out of). She actually wore those most of the night, if you can believe that. Try looking through one magnifying glass and see how you feel. Now double it. I would have had a major headache. But she was so into it she just dealt with it. Awesome family I have. Plus she would go around using her wand on the kids hands to read their palms. lol They thought she was cookoo, which Trelawney pretty much is. Rita Skeeter had the act down with her dress and notebook. She went around asking kids for gossip to print in her Daily Prophet. Again they thought she was cookoo but she was too good.
My Dad had to remember one line to teach the kids. He was Mad Eye Moody, and he had to remember to teach them "Expecto Patronum." LOL That was too funny. My Dad was getting hurt trying to say the spell. Well he did flub it up a bit but he made such a presentation out of it, telling the kids that there was only one REALLY important spell they needed to remember all night, that the kids just said it for him and repeated it all excited. Once they were told the "Dementor" could come at any time, they kept asking when he was coming. We had an older kid that we know dress up as the Dementor and they all had fun using their wands and spell to get rid of him.
I knew the kids liked all the props when they all started asking if they could keep this and that (wands, pens robes) and I announced that anything I gave them tonight was theirs to keep and they all were excited about that. I just love younger kids. They get excited easy. I guess that's why I wanted to do this for them. I knew they'd all appreciate it. Much older and they'd think it was lame, unless of course they were Harry Potter fans. A lot of these kids had never even seen Harry Potter movies but they still got into it.
So all in all it was a really fun party. I had a few parents stay to help, which was cool. One just wouldn't stop gushing about how it was the best birthday party she had ever been to in all her life. lol She said when she saw her daughter's invitation she knew this was no ordinary party.

That is so awesome ! I am going to suggest that for one of my nieces or nepwhews parties (my daughter is way too young - she's having a Spot (Eric Hill) party, but when she's older you have given me the best ideas )
What did you do for the cake? In the past I made one of my neice and nephew (they're twins) a Hogwarts cake. It was meant to be a normal castle made out of lamingtons for the bricks and choc coated ice cream cones for the turretts. It then had medieval lego figurines fighting on the brick work and in the courtyard. Only, the only lego I could buy was HP, and quidditch at that. I got a Harry Potter lego man (complete with scar), random slytherin figurine, two lego broomsticks and a lego snitch. I positioned these around the castle and then made flags with toothpicks and white name labels. I drew the house logo for Gryffindor and Slytherin and coloured in the backgrounds on each half of the labels, then folded them in half around the toothpick. I popped them into the corners near the turretts. While it wasn't like the movies, the kids absolutely adored the Harry Potter Quidditch Cake (How close it came to being a boring old castle )
