I know that the third movie came out a long time ago, but this is still on my mind.  In the movie, Sirius was crazy and not really good-looking.  But I always pictured him as being very handsome and calm/reserved.  I think JK said once that he was good-looking (correct me if I'm wrong)...any thoughts?

Well I thought they did a pretty good job in casting the part of Sirius. Gary Oldman did a good job in the movie playing Sirius. I'm pretty sure JK is reflecting on how Sirius "used" to look before he was sent to azkaban when she says he's good-looking. I thought I remember reading something about how Sirius has kinda of a sunken face and what not from all his time spent in azkaban. He could still be good-looking...just not as much as he once was.

I like Gary Oldman for the role very much - pretty close to how I imagined Sirius.  (Although I would have liked to have seen the scenes from the Pensieve where he was all cocky and handsome...)  Now the shot of him in the fire....  that's another story.  I imagined more of a head floating - you know - like the time Mrs. Weasley popped a piece of toast into someone's mouth (not Sirius, but I forget who), or the time Umbridge tried to grab someone through the fireplace by the hair.  Sorry to rant off topic, but that's the only thing about Sirius that bothered me.

I really like the film Sirius. He seemed quite mad before the truth was revealed and i liked it. He may not look exactly how i imagined him but he's pretty close. Also, I'd rather have a good actor then someone who can't act their way out of a plastic bag but looks "right".

I agree that the head in the fire should look like that person, not just a weird bunch of embers.  The scene where Molly gave toast to a head in the fire, was in the BOOK GoF.  The head was Amos Diggory, Cedric's father.  It was one of the scenes cut in the movie.  Amos wanted Arthur to come to Moody's house before the "pleasemen" came to see why his dust bins were firing trash and metal.  Of course, this happened because Wormtail and Crouch, Jr. came to kidnap the real Moody.

In the book, GoF, Harry is pleased to see how much better Sirius looks.  Better fed, shorter unmatted hair, etc.  Unfortunately the ember Sirius of the movie didn't show that.

The other time mentioned, Sirius is again talking to Harry in the fire in OoP.  He looks enough like himself that Crookshanks tries to paw at him.  Sirius leaves just in time to keep Umbridge from grabbing his hair.

My daughter wonders if maybe Gary was only available for recording.   He also read his letter, you know.

I always imagined older Sirius a lot better looking than older Snape. Granted, he was well portrayed, but his appearance was off to me. He reminded me of a pirate with all the tatoos.

Sirius *was* good-looking. I think Azkaban was supposed to have left him with worse than scruffy hair. All he had left were hints of his former looks, when he scrubbed up and smiled.

Gary Oldman was better-looking than I imagine Sirius (because it would have been rather cruel to have starved him), but they did an impressive job making him look manky. The main difference in my mind is the length of hair, but that's not an important detail.

And Sirius definitely seemed a bit... let's call it quirky... in the books to me!
