What were the funniest moments in PS/SS?
What made them funny?

How did the humor help the story along?

Was there any unintentional humor?
What do you think was the intended emotion?
Why do you think it struck you differently?

Were there parts which you thought should've been funny but weren't?
Why do you think this was?

ETA: Some humor from chapter 3 (p32 US paperback)

QUOTE
"They stuff people's heads down the the first day at Stonewall" he told Harry. "Want to come upstairs and practice"
"No thanks," said Harry. "The poor toilet's never had anything as horrible as your head stuffed down it- it might get sick" Then he ran before Dudley could work out what he'd said.

There was definately some great humor with Dudley, including the "Toilet", and his birthday where dispite having 37 or so pressies, he wants more, and then brakes all of his presents within the next day.

I love all of the Humour in the HP books, especially anything said by the twins. From the first time Harry meets them at Kings Cross station I loved them, and I think that it is significant to the story that the first time we meet the twins, they are in the midst of a prank especially as that is their main speciality in life!...

"Fred, you next," the plump woman said.
"I'm not Fred, I'm George," said the boy. "Honestly, woman, you call yourself our mother? Can't you tell I'm George?"

And then a bit later on the platform...

Now, you two - Behave yourselves. If I get one word that you've blown up a toilet or - " [Mrs. Weasley]
"Blown up a toilet? We've never blown up a toilet."
"Great idea though, thanks, Mum."

I also love the very end when they return to London for the summer and Harry is happy about the fact he finally has his own life away from the Dursleys, and now he has something which will help the summer months away from that place more bearable

"Hope you have - er - a good holiday," said Hermione.....
"Oh I will," said Harry, and they were suprised at the grin that was spreading over his face. "They don't know we're not allowed to use magic at home. I'm going to have a lot of fun with Dudley this summer..."

I loved the way Hagrid talked down to the Dursley's. I don't know if it was ment to be funny or not but it made me smile.

I also loved Dudder's pig tail thumbup.gif

I absolutely love Harry's (and Jo's) dry, sarcastic, sometimes dark sense of humor. Maybe because it's so similar to my own. lol.gif

There are so many great one liners! One of my favorite from PS/SS:
QUOTE
"The poor toilet's never had anything as horrible as your head down it — it might be sick."
It's biting and clever and leaves Dudley standing there scratching his head. lol.gif

I love the humour in book 1. The Twins really make the book. The book is a very dark book really - concerning death, a child that is ill-treated by his relatives (not abused, but his life isn't easy) - and humour is vital to lighten the tone smile.gif
The part which really made me laugh was when Hagrid made Dudley a pig's tail. Perhaps not very nice - but personally, I think Dudley deserved it! lol.gif

I was rereading through it and I saw this part that I found quite funny that seems quite overlooked. It's by DD on page 296 when Harry just woke up in the hospital wing.

QUOTE
"What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrel is a complete secret, so, naturally the whole school knows."

I love how DD is kind of a humorous person but he says it with such seriousness you almost miss the joke. I also like the line after that

QUOTE
"I believe your friends Misters Fred and George Weasley were responsible for trying to send you a toilet seat."

Which kind of ties in with the whole toilet jokes in PS/SS

It's lucky it's dark. I haven't blushed so much since Madam Pomfrey told me she liked my new earmuffs.

I love that quote so much that I put it in my signature! It always makes me giggle because I just can't imagine Dumbledore wearing earmuffs.

Dumbledore, Fred and George have the best lines when it comes to comedy - the humour is one aspect of the books I love most.

My favorite part of PS/SS is the part with the Devil's snare when Hermione figures out that it hates sunlight and says she doesn't have any matches to start a fire and Ron's like "Are you a witch or not?" I love that part!
