Boggarts show the greatest fear of a person but do they have other uses? As in seeing your worst fear help you conquer it? What do you guys think?

Hmmmm..... I don't think so, I think that Boggarts are just annoying pests. You couldn't conquer you fear if your greatest fear was a dementor, like Harry, because dementors take all the joy out of you, so I think there is no way to not be afraid of a dementor. So, like I said, I think they are just annoying pests.

I wouldn't say they are evil, that's way to harsh. They defend themselves by making you retreat from your biggest fear & therefore are defended. But to help you in overcoming your biggest fear? Possibly, but the knowledge of your biggest fear would be helpful, I can't even think of mine so I'd like to meet a boggart so it could clear that up for me. biggrin.gif

Oh yes, I don't think boggarts are evil creatures. For all we know they could really be the cutest, fluffiest, little darling pink creatures in the world who have just devleoped the fear thing as a defence mechanism so they will be left alone.

I guess someone evil could use boggarts to guard a place, so that to get to the place you have to conquer your own worst fear several times. But boggarts might be helpful, too, like ~Dumbledore's~Ghost has suggested. Suppose boggarts play a part in Auror training?
But most likely I think they are just annoying little creatures, like a ghoul or garden gnomes. Just little pests, but to get rid of them you need some training. But they are not even mentioned in "Fantastic Beasts".

I have a question, what if your biggest fear isn't something 'living'? What if your biggest fear was something like the darkness? Or death? What does a boggart turn into then? (More then one question i know, but this is something I've been thinking about tongue.gif )

They are pests. But then again, Lupin shows the class a Boggart as part of DADA. So it might be Dark, but it can't be evil because it doesn't think for itself. It thinks as the person standing before it and harnesses their worst fear.

Wow clap.gif

The reason I started this thread was I had an idea about wizard therapists (Since Snape needs one or not but that is here
) I figured that a wizard therapist would use one to have the patient show their greatest fear but no I don't think they are evil (or if they are then their "evilness" is simply a defense as many have pointed out)

I'm gonna have to say that they are pests. Is it explained anywhere in the book what a boggart does to a person? Other than take the form of their nightmare? Does it eat them or something? I may have missed an explanation of this somewhere, but by my understanding, they are just pests. Like ~Dumbledore's~Ghost they turn into their worst fear to defend themselves, not to kill you.

I suppose a boggart can be viewed as a pest. After all, Molly pretty much supported this case when she casually insisted that she would take care of the boggart hidden at headquarters in OoTP.

But a boggart is also a representation of quite a dark and dangerous force, which is fear. It's clearly a useful learning tool as Lupin demonstrated in class, and it's a mighty good lesson indeed to learn how to overcome your fears in life.

The fact that it takes a simple spell to vanquish a boggart is irrelevant if an innocent witch or wizard should happen across one, because they'll be so overcome by fear they won't know what to do.

So, while Molly, and many others, may view it as a mere pest, it can be quite a dangerous pest if left to its own devices, because it is capable of paralyzing one with fear -- which is what ended up happening to poor Molly.

I think, depending on who the person is, bogarts can be very evil. They can drvie you mad with your worst fears. The more complex you are, so are your fears, and that can be very evil. Depending on what your worst fear it I guess would say the answer.
