QUOTE(~Dumbledore's~Ghost¿~ @ Jan 13 2007, 01:45 PM) I wouldn't say they are evil, that's way to harsh. They defend themselves by making you retreat from your biggest fear & therefore are defended. But to help you in overcoming your biggest fear? Possibly, but the knowledge of your biggest fear would be helpful, I can't even think of mine so I'd like to meet a boggart so it could clear that up for me.
Oh yes, I don't think boggarts are evil creatures. For all we know they could really be the cutest, fluffiest, little darling pink creatures in the world who have just devleoped the fear thing as a defence mechanism so they will be left alone.
I guess someone evil could use boggarts to guard a place, so that to get to the place you have to conquer your own worst fear several times. But boggarts might be helpful, too, like ~Dumbledore's~Ghost has suggested. Suppose boggarts play a part in Auror training? But most likely I think they are just annoying little creatures, like a ghoul or garden gnomes. Just little pests, but to get rid of them you need some training. But they are not even mentioned in "Fantastic Beasts".

I suppose a boggart can be viewed as a pest. After all, Molly pretty much supported this case when she casually insisted that she would take care of the boggart hidden at headquarters in OoTP.
But a boggart is also a representation of quite a dark and dangerous force, which is fear. It's clearly a useful learning tool as Lupin demonstrated in class, and it's a mighty good lesson indeed to learn how to overcome your fears in life.
The fact that it takes a simple spell to vanquish a boggart is irrelevant if an innocent witch or wizard should happen across one, because they'll be so overcome by fear they won't know what to do.
So, while Molly, and many others, may view it as a mere pest, it can be quite a dangerous pest if left to its own devices, because it is capable of paralyzing one with fear -- which is what ended up happening to poor Molly.
