In Chamber of Secrets we meet for the first time Mr. Weasley and Harry comes to the Burrow for the first time. Ginny, the youngest and only female child of the bunch, comes to play a bigger role the one original suspect as she is slowly ensnared in the grips of a memory of Lord Voldemort. Percy begins to show his desire to separate himself from his family. Fred & George are their usual comedic relief. And Ron faces a few of his greatest fears - including being expelled.
HP101: The Weasley Family Some questions to get you started on the Weasley family and their roles in the Chamber of Secrets: 1. We often see Percy worried about his future throughout the book, do you think some of his actions - such as his being overly concerned of Ron being in the girls bathroom - as a sign of his pending departure of his family? Are there other clues to this in the book? 2. Why is it that Ginny finds such a comfort in the Diary? 3. What was your impression of Mr. Weasley when we first meet him? -------------------- |

I think that Ginny is like any other girl, having someone that listens and dosn't talk to much, and someone that can keep a secret
is a very attractive package. I know many people that would love to have someone like that, there are people that pay others for that sort of comefort (therapists). as for Mr Weasley, from the start I thought he was great!! He and Mrs. Weasley are a perfect fit complete opposites, but alike where it really counts. They both have hearts in the right place. As for your first question, I plan to reread really carefully to see if anything stands out to me reguarding Percy |

Are there other clues to this in the book? Percy is very enamored with himself and his status at school, and then at the Ministry later on after graduation. He's definitely putting on airs, and seems to be ashamed of his family's standing among the wizarding community. I'm also interested in the fact that his name reminds me of Perceval from the Arthurian legends, and his father's name is Arthur, but I'm not sure if there is a coincidence there beyond the names. I certainly haven't found a way to connect the Arthur/Grail works to the Weazleys, but since there's so much of it from so many authors that it might be difficult. QUOTE 2. Why is it that Ginny finds such a comfort in the Diary? Alone and vulnerable at her first year of school, it provided comfort to her, much like any similar substance or activity (e.g. chocolate) can. QUOTE 3. What was your impression of Mr. Weasley when we first meet him? I found him very likable. I would think of him as a great scholar and investigator of muggledom, which is why he was so perfect for his job. This post has been edited by Dreamteam: Feb 2 2007, 09:48 AM |

I mean what would people say if his youngest brother was found in the girls bathroom, of all places. Ron's already done enough to embarrass him because of the whole driving issue, but tha'ts just Percy. -------------------- |

Anyone could guess I adore the Weasley family, but I'll give my two cents for the heads of The Burrow.
Arthur Weasley is a wonderful big hearted guy who happens to have a job which allows him to combine his love of tinkering (especially with all things muggle) along with doing good for the world as a whole. He really appreciates that his job, unglamorous though it may be, is an important one for maintaining good wizard/muggle relations. Because of he and Perkins, the little everyday things don't get out of hand in British wizard/muggle interactions (one has to wonder how many wizards are needed in the huge untamed United States Wizarding Organization Molly on the other hand seems to me to be an amazingly competent witch of her generation. Recognizing that she came from an era where witches didn't likely work as much but tended to stay home & raise the kids it seems she has done a terrific job. In many ways she has 8 kids because Mr Weasley often is even worse than his sons for stirring up trouble (flying cars anyone?) yet she manages to keep them all fed, clothed and otherwise taken care of physically and emotionally. We know she is devoted to, protective of, and yet as proud as could be of her husband and children. Like plenty of mothers she flies off the handle sometimes, but in her heart she has her priorities lined up. We all know, if we think about it, she would have taken Harry into her home & her heart in a second if offered the chance. I've known enough like her in my life and truly for them "What is one more? Please join us" is said with heartfelt emotion. Yet we know she would probably be hurt beyond belief if Harry offered to help pay for his room & board whilst he stayed there. I don't remember any one place from the series I can point to (though later in OotP in the hospital is up there) but I deeply get the feeling that Arthur & Molly are entirely devoted to eachother and it is that deep and abiding love which conquers all other things that makes Harry feel so at home when in their house. I said my piece about Ginny in the thread on her Maybe I'll find threads about the twins and Percy, although I have such mixed emotions about Percy (from later books, this one just made me think he was a scared and self-absorbed know-it-all) I may jump in later about him -------------------- Wilhelmina - "Dumbledore's (wo)man through and through"

I too adore the Weasley family. Some of my favorite moments in the entire series are moments when Harry gets to hang out at the Burrow and just be with "his family". The Weasleys to me are the epitome of what the word "family" means. I love how realistically Jo writes them. They are not some 1950's Disney-fied version of what we think the perfect family should be. They are real people with flaws. You have Arthur being irresponsible with the car, Molly doing her best impression of a saber toothed tiger, Percy being a pompous, self-absorbed git, and Ginny being vulnerable enough to fall victim to Tom Riddle's diary. We also see Ron not fitting in comfortably and being self-concious about the whole situation when bringing Harry into the chaos that is The Burrow. In short, this is a real live family that loves, yells, cries, celebrates, and mourns with each other, just like all families should.

I suppose Percy's worry about reputation and following the rules is foreshadowing his joining of the Ministry but I never thought he would leave his family. 2. Ginny is a lonely 11-year-old who does not appear to have many friends at al when she begind at Hogwarts so the Diary is like a friend to her, which she can carry around with her 'in my pocket.' A lot of people take comfort in diaries because they do not mind what you say, in a sense, and will not judge you, but Ginny's spoke back and they were always encouraging. Giny's self-esteem seemed rather low and it was a boster for it. 3. I thought Mr. Weasley was a fun-loving dad and the more leniant parent. -------------------- ![]() The signature pic is credit to theonlysong and given to me by Ioli. |

When the book first enters Percy into this story, he is by himself in his room. The twins comment on how long he is there alone. His behavior could be somewhat typical middle child syndrome. He is trying to make his own mark, so to speak, in the world. To do something to stand out on his own in such a large family. Maybe even a world to call his own. Although I think he is a little misguided, I can see what he is trying to accomplish.
Ginny is not only in her first year at Hogwarts, but she is the only girl in her family. I'm sure Mrs. Weasley is busy a lot of the time, so she may not have extra time to devote only to her daughter. Ginny, I'm sure, finds this diary like a close friend. It gives her comfort in an uncomfortable time in her life. When I first read about Mr. Weasley I was, for some reason, a little disappointed in his response to first meeting Harry. I know he is obsessed with muggle things, but he just met Harry Potter. I thought he would be a little more excited. Anyway, other than that, I thought he was great. His response to the boys flying the car is priceless!! Great family! I love the Burrow and wish they would show more about it in the movies!! -------------------- ![]() "In the end, it mattered not that you could not close your mind. It was your heart that saved you." I think we can see the increasing distance between Percy and the other Weasleys if we compare his behavior at Christmas in PS and COS. In PS the twins at least got him to wear the sweater and eat with his siblings (Christmas is about family, they tell him). In COS he keeps his distance, spends his time with the staff and claims that the only reason he stayed for the holiday was to show support for the staff at a time of crisis.
