Colin Creevey ![]() After Harry and Ron's remarkable arrival at school they watch the Sorting Ceremony through a window – a "very small, mousey-haired boy had been called forward to place the hat on his head". After lunch the next day he introduces himself to Harry QUOTE "All right, Harry? I'm – I'm Colin Creevey," he said breathlessly, taking a tentative step forward. "I'm in Gryffindor, too. D'you think – would it be all right if – can I have a picture?" he said, raising the camera hopefully. Much to Draco's delight Colin not only wants a photo of Harry he wants it signed! From that point onwards star-struck Colin, with his camera at the ready, follows Harry whenever possible, apparently having "memorised Harry's timetable". On his way to visit Harry in the hospital wing Colin meets the basilisk which attacks and petrifies him, luckily for Colin he's snap-happy and can't wait to photograph it - which saves his life. Some things to think about: 1) Colin knew nothing of the Wizarding World before receiving his letter from Hogwarts so why is he so interested in Harry and his survival of Voldemort's attack? 2) Why did the Sorting Hat put Colin into Gryffindor? 3) We see little of the students outside Harry's year, why is Colin's character so prominent? 4) Is Colin's interest in photography just a hobby or does it have greater significance? Perhaps you have other questions or theories you'd like to discuss regarding Colin's role in the Chamber of Secrets? To the first question - I guess like Hermione, Colin was curious to find out what it meant to be a wizard. I don't think he learned all the spellbooks by heart, but he must have read some books on wizarding history, and the story of a toddler defeating the darkest wizard of all times can be fascinating. And then finding out this is a boy one year older than him, and that he will see him soon must have got him excited.
Collin is in COS in order to create a contrast between Harry, who does not seek fame (but it follows him anyway) and Lockhart who relishes it. |

Colin has always interested me because he seems to hover...he hovers around Harry...he hovers in the background of every book after this one. I think he seeks out Harry to begin with because Harry is the "cool" one, Colin doesn't know anyone else, and he comes off as kind of a hanger-on, until later. In GoF, I think he is one of Harry's most loyal "friends", he never wavered in his support of Harry for one moment. He got off to a bad start with Harry by doing the worst thing, calling attention to Harry's fame. He probably thought this would make Harry his friend, but Harry hates to be stared at for his scar. Although, now that I think about it, in the beginning of their friendship Ron also was very direct about Harry's past, and Harry didn't give him the brush off.
From what we have seen of Colin so far, I think he is more Hufflepuff than Gryffindor. I have a suspicion, though, that the Creevey brothers are going to play an important part in DH, I just haven't decided if that is a good thing or not. -------------------- ![]() The Downstairs Drawing Room Do you want to discuss Deathly Hallows in a private reading room? QUOTE Although, now that I think about it, in the beginning of their friendship Ron also was very direct about Harry's past, and Harry didn't give him the brush off. I think that has to do with Lockhart and the fact that Harry had to deal with Draco all last year. When he goes to the store - lockhart pulls him into a picture and then draco gives him attitude about it. And Ron came to Harry about it differently - he wasn't in his face going - Hey! Your Harry, let me be your friend. I like Colin's character a lot though, he is a good foil and he also shows that Harry feels for those that danger comes to. While he found that Colin was a bit annoying, he was also upset about the fact that Colin was hurt because of him (being out of bed to sneak in and see harry and bring him a treat). He is extremely loyal to Harry from the moment he lays eyes on him. I wonder though, the Hats says that his choice is only part of the process (my words) and your choice is the rest - I wonder if Colin wanted to be in Gryffindor because of Harry? Colin Creevey will die in Deathly Hollows. For some strange reason I think many of the students that were attacked, will again be victims. Maybe Nagini gets him, and that the Chamber of Secrets is just forshadowing his own real death.
Weird thing is - Who are the Weasley Family going to hire for Bill and Fleur's Wedding Photography? Would Colin Creevey show up to shoot the Wedding? I can't imagine Colin would be allowed to take many photos at Hogwarts, due to all the circumstances. Could Colin's photos taken during the Tri-Wizard Cup earned him some strange favor with Fleur Delacour? Wouldn't that be a surprise! Cheers, Helyx |

QUOTE(scollins @ Feb 2 2007, 03:15 AM) Although, now that I think about it, in the beginning of their friendship Ron also was very direct about Harry's past, and Harry didn't give him the brush off. Unlike Ron, who draws attention to Harry's scar in the privacy of the train compartment, Colin draws attention to Harry in a very public way. He wants to take Harry's picture in the courtyard and says "I know all about you. Everyone's told me" reminding Harry that everyone knows his history and they talk about him and probably discuss what happened, making him a centre of attention even behind his back. He also asks Harry if he will sign the photo which is overheard by Draco who can't wait to jump in and ridicule him. Colin, "whose entire body was about as thick as Crabbe's neck" leaps to Harry's defence, which I think gives a hint of his courage - a new kid just a couple of days into school and he stands up to the school bully. Helyx I love the idea of Colin arriving at the Burrow to take the photos, he is in the same year as Ginny so its feasible that she may mention to Bill and Fleur that he takes good photos. However, to bring this back on topic perhaps Colin's great interest in photography here is the beginning of an ambition to be a professional wizarding photographer, he's never without his camera and he's taken an interest not only in taking the photos but also in how they are developed to make them move. -------------------- |

Since I re-read COS - I agree - I really think that Colin has a much bigger part to play in the series .. it's too co-incidental his large exposure in COS otherwise. It's like Ginny in COS ... if anything significant happens throughout the book there might be one line thrown in seemingly out of nowhere and leading nowhere saying something like "Ginny weasley was also scared ..." But we realise at the end of the book why we kept being told what Ginny was thinking every now and again.

First off, Colin is 11 and new to a brand new world. I guess I am more surprised that more muggleborns didn't have cameras to take pictures to show there family back home what life in a wizarding world is like... the castle itself, the great hall, Quidditch, ghosts, elves, giants, unicorns... all the stuff you read about in fairy tales ends up being kind of real. But I guess there is that whole magic secrecy stuff... but still.
If Harry had just took Colin aside, took the picture and signed it, he could have told Colin that he wasn't real comfortable with all the attention and that may have changed his relationship with Colin, but then again Harry is only 12, a year older than Colin. |

Personally, as much as he was an annoyance in some ways, I liked Colin Creevey. But then I thought of him as much like my annoying kid brother when I was younger, whom I truly love but wanted to just crawl into a hole every time he showed up wanting to be included with I and my friends.
Harry doesn't have a kid brother, which we all know, but Colin fulfills the role very well for him. Nine months a year Harry effectively has Colin for a little brother. As has been pointed out Colin reciprocates by standing up to the school bully for his adopted big brother/hero and by sneaking out during the night to try to bring Harry some treats to cheer him up whilst he is in the hospital wing. Seems a likely Gryfinndor even prior to our now fore-knowledge about his future behavior in other books. Obviously Colin has no way of knowing Harry isn't interested in being famous, especially now with Lockhart flashing those dazzling pearly white teeth and insisting that Harry wants to be like him. An eleven year old who finds out that he is going to school with someone who is famous and just a year older than him who might be interested in being friends... Sounds like almost guaranteed hero worship. Colin probably likes to use his camera before he goes off to school and suddenly he has all these amazing things to take photographs of. Harry just is one of those amazing things. I too have wondered at the fact that he is running around with a camera, since it would seem that people in the MoM would be highly paranoid that such photos sent home to muggle parents would end up breaking the secret of the magical community wide open to the muggle world. Maybe we'll find that only for those with magic will the photographs move? Just a thought. -------------------- Wilhelmina - "Dumbledore's (wo)man through and through"

QUOTE 2) Why did the Sorting Hat put Colin into Gryffindor? Actually, I think that Gryffindor is the perfect house for Colin. When you think about the things that he does, it makes sense. He stands up to Draco in the scene where he is taking Harry's picture with Lockhart. Then he has the gumption to sneak out of his dormitory in the middle of the night (sound familar?) to sneak up to the hospital wing to go see Harry. Then, knowing that there is a huge monster on the loose that would like nothing better than to kill muggleborns, he actually tries to take a photo of said monster. The kid is a total Gryffindor, IMO. -------------------- |
