In 2002, Warner Bros released their film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Phenomenally successful, it grossed over $866 million and is still in the all time top ten.
However, did Chris Columbus, David Heyman, Steve Kloves and the other cast and crew turn your vision into reality? Here you will find our CoS film Gallery. It is the most comprehensive collection of CoS film images anywhere on the internet and includes these fabulous pictures! ![]() Don't forget to look in our wonderful CoS section in the Leaky Video Galleries here where we have behind the scenes looks, interviews and trailers and cast your vote! What scenes were better on the big screen, and where does the book win every time? This post has been edited by MaraudingDon: Jan 31 2007, 07:09 AM |

I have to say that I liked how they envisioned the mandrake plants. They are ugly and squishy and exactly like they should be. I was a bit disappointed that there were no fluffy pink earmuffs though.
At first I wasn't sure about the casting of Branaugh, but after seeing his brilliant performance I see him every time I read Lockhart now. -------------------- |

I have to admit that I thought the scene when Harry is running through the tunnels and the basilisk is chasing him was very well done, IMO. It had a lot of people in the cinema very scared (as did Aragog, of course.
However, I absolutely loathed the ending ("There's no Hogwarts without you, Hagrid!") It was just so corny, everyone rolls their eyes and stifles a groan whenever we reach the end on DVD. I agree that the mandrakes were great though. Draco's expression was priceless. -------------------- PS: I do hope we've put enough stamps on

I think it's a wonderful interpretation. As an HP fan, I will always find something wrong, but overall I liked it very much. The acromantulas freak me out more than they freak out Ron. Yes I closed my eyes during that part (I was 10), and I still fastforward the tape whenever we reach that part. I am a true arachnophobic!

I also thought the interpertation was pretty good. I have seen far worse interpertations of books to movies, I have always thought the Harry Potter movies were the best as far as that goes. I understand that there just isn't enough time to create all the detail that are in books, and so I am a little forgiving on that score. However in some cases the movie and book have only the characters names in common and that is about it. I am very glad that the makers of the Harry Potter movies are as commited to the books as they are.

I thought the film looked great, except maybe the basilisk, I always think something looks funny about it but I don't know what. I wish the films would focus more on the characters. The thing that annoyed me most about the CoS movie were Hermione's lines. According the the movie she knows everything, always, she knows what mudbloods are, even though in the books Ron tells them about it. They seem to give anything Ron says that is substantial to Hermione.

ok, i voted 'acceptable' there were things about the adaptation to film that i just didnt like... some things were changed that little bit too much for me, there are some major continuity errors that are kind of crucial to the plot, but the acting is growing in the film which is great...
dobby is not at all how i imagined him and was very concerned that i would view dobby (and subsequent house elves) in a different light as my imagination and visualisation is not very good, but i was pleased to discover that my vision of dobby stayed in my own minds eye... i highly prefer the adaptation of the womping willow in poa and i think the animation of it cos leaves a lot to be desired, i was very disappointed in that. aragog is great however, and i think the casting of branagh was genius and i, like sooner, see him when he appears in later books. i also viewed the chamber and the journey to the chamber very differently, but thought the adaptation of that was good. i didnt comment on this thread for ps cos there was too much that wasnt right for me... i think at this point they are starting to get it better, they are cutting out the sugaryness of wb and making it more real... but dont even get me started on the horrid hollywood ending... its nearly as bad as the ending of poa. i did love the beginning tho... im glad i read the books first tho... i try to do this with most film adaptations... -------------------- |

I think that the film media always leaves out so many things that fans of a book just love, but that is the limitation of film. When placed against other films from books, especially the other HP films, I think this was a very good adaptation.
Personally, I felt that the first two films tried to stick with the heart of the books and subsequent films have been an attempt to create the director's vision. Of course, the DD change didn't help things one bit. |

Architecture of Hogwarts was flat. It wasn't until Prisoner of Azkaban that it seemed the Digital Effect Department figured out how to make Hogwarts Castle have more depth in scale and dimention.
I did like the styling of many of the inner sets - like Classrooms, and the Greenhouse. The Chamber of Secrets was a troublesome design. It felt more like a stage set, then an actual Chamber. Part of this is due to how the camera angles were shot, and the editing of the dialogue. I have to say I fast forward through that scene if I can when I watch the DVD of it - or I just take the DVD off once they push Lockhart down into the secret hole of the Girls Bathroom. Of course I do love Diagon Alley. I would love to go into the bookstore, and hope I don't knock any magic piles of books over. What a shop! I thought the casting choice of Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart was right on the mark. The Whomping Willow did not really work right visually. ______________________________________ I felt Hagrid's Hut looked like a bad shed. I still prefer the 3rd film for the change in the visual location of Hagrid's Hut. That was more to what I imaged it would be like to go to visit him. In The Secret Chamber, it's too Wizard Boy Scout Camp - Just outside the flat lines of the Castle Marble Fence, and the precision trimmed grass, you see we have this mere shed where a semi-giant lives! Um, no. I felt like, ok, so Hagrid has a Power Lawn Mower for the grounds of Hogwart's just out of the camera's lense with some DIY Brand NAME on it. I would expect him to have goggles and some Magic Power Hedgeclippers as well (whoops, I am getting ahead of myself - that is film 4) _______________________________________ I liked the design of the Girl's Bathroom (since boys are not allowed to see it - wow, what a real treat! um, yeah.) MOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNINNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGG Murtle - they didn't actually kill her to cast her did they? Maybe they locked her up in the bathroom set for many nights to get her to brood like that. Excellent choice! I also liked the set for the Dueling Club. Still, the film just feels rushed in places, and not fully developed. It is not my favorite Harry Potter Film. Cheers, Helyx This post has been edited by helyx: Feb 1 2007, 09:36 PM |

The film was good, though I still imagine some scenes different from the movie...
Kenneth Branagh's casting as Gilderoy Lockhard was Excellent...Before watching the film, I had a different image of Lockhard. But once I saw the film, Branagh became my Lockhard.. I also loved the way Moaning Martyl was created in the film..She is perfect.. In the scene where Harry was stepping to go down the tunnel, Martyl says that he's welcomed to share her toilet if he dies... But in the books she says that only after Harry got out successfully from the chamber... Anyway I have to admit that the film version of this scene was as hilarious as the book version. I didn't like the last scene where they all clap for Hagrid though..It wasn't in the book and I think there is no need for that off-story scene. The Basilisk scene was more interesting in the movie than in the book, I have to admit that...They have made it interesting, without going off the base story line..Great effort.. And, I liked the Tom Riddle casting...Oh-God!!! Thankgoodness, I didn't start support Riddle instead of Harry..!! It's really worth watching the film..... -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() |
