One of the most common phrases in the English language is that "laughter is the best medicine." It is readily apparent when reading the Harry Potter series that humor is an essential part of JK Rowling's writing style.
Luckily for all of us, her second installment is just as humor packed as the first one. From the slapstick antics of Fred and George Weasley to the dark sarcasm of Professor Snape, Jo weaves humorous moments in like a master and uses it to help define her characters. As we look back over Chamber of Secrets, I would like to touch on a few points on humor:

Hmmm... the Chamber of Chuckles, eh?
This is an interesting topic because CoS is arguably quite a dark book, complete with creepy monsters and hidden dangers. But of course, there are also moments of hilarity. Dudley's always good for a laugh: 'We had to write about our hero at school, Mr. Mason; I wrote about you. I personally love some of the moments with Dobby. 'Harry Potter freed Dobby!' said the elf shrilly, gazing up at Harry, moonlight from the nearest window reflected in his orb-like eyes. 'Harry Potter set Dobby free!' 'Least I could do, Dobby,' said Harry, grinning. 'Just promise never to try and save my life again.' The elf's ugly brown face split suddenly into a wide, toothy smile. And a bit earlier: But Dobby didn't move. He was holding up Harry's disgusting, slimy sock, and looking at it as though it were a priceless treasure. Then, of course, there are the moments celebrating Lockhart's enormous ego. 'Tut, tut- hardly any of you remembered that my favourite colour is lilac. I say so in Year with a Yeti. And a few of you need to read Weekend with a Werewolf more carefully- I clearly state in chapter twelve that my ideal birthday gift would be harmony between all magic and non-magic peoples- though I wouldn't say no to a large bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhiskey!' He gave them another roguish wink. Ron was now staring at Lockhart with an expression of disbelief on his face... And the early morning Quidditch training: 'So,' said Wood, at long last, jerking Harry from a wistful fantasy about what he could be eating for breakfast at this very moment up at the castle, 'is that clear? Any questions?' 'I've got a question, Oliver,' said George, who had woken with a start. 'Why couldn't you have told us all this yesterday when we were awake?' Not to mention Christmas dinner: Dumbledore led them in a few of his favourite carols, Hagrid booming more and more loudly with every goblet of eggnog he consumed. Percy, who hadn't noticed that Fred had bewitched his Prefect badge so that it now read 'Pinhead,' kept asking them all what they were sniggering at. And of course there are so many more, from Peeves' "Oh Potter You Rotter" song to the various woes of Moaning Myrtle... -------------------- PS: I do hope we've put enough stamps on

My favorite:
"Harry--I think I just understood something! I've got to go to the library!" And she sprinted away up the stairs. "What does she understand?"said Harry "Loads more then I do," said Ron, shaking his head. "But why go to the library?" "Because that's what Hermione does,"said Ron shrugging. "When in dout, go to the library -------------------- "Yes, Harry blessed as I am with extraordinary
brainpower, I do understand everything you told me." "You may, perhaps, have wondered why I never chose you as a prefect? I must confess...that I rather thought... you had enough responsiblity to be going on with" ~ Albus Dumbledore ~ |

I love thoe you mentioned, but the one that gets me gigling every time is when Hermione gets the note signed by Lockhart to get MOste Potente Potions, she wants to keep it, and Ron says, "He'll sign anything that stands still long enough!"
And the unforgettable: "Snape looked as if the first person to ask him for a Love Potion would be forcefed poison." -------------------- |

Harry gets my vote for having some of the funniest lines in the beginning of the book, and I think that the 2 instances that I am about to bring up show us how bright and at the same time how dark his humor can be at the same time.
QUOTE(Harry Potter to Dudley Dursley) Well done. So you've finally learned the days of the week. I love this line as it so reminds me of Harry's comment to Dudley about the toilet in the first book. Poor Dudders just doesn't stand a chance when it comes to being outsmarted by his cousin. the second line that I love from Harry in the first chapter is QUOTE He [Harry] didn't think the Dursleys would like him any better in Majorca than they did on Privet Drive I absolutely love Harry's darker humor and how he uses it almost as a self-defense mechanism. Draco also gets points from me having one of the funniest lines of Chapter 12. QUOTE(Draco Malfoy to fake!Goyle) Azkaban -- the wizard prison, Goyle. Honestly, if you were any slower you'd be going backwards. I really do think that all evileness aside, Draco can be quite funny. -------------------- |

I thought most of the comments in Chapter 1: The Worst Birthday concerning what Vernon wanted the whole family to do when the Masons arrived. Harry's lone comment each time was,"I'm going to be up in my bedroom, making no noise, and pretending I'm not here." cracked me up. Then when he says,"Jiggery, Pokey, Hocus Pocus, Squiggly Wiggly" the nonsense words that frighten Dudley also makes me bust up laughing.
At the end of the chapter when Harry is forced to do work after making fun of Dudley,"Wish they could see the famous Harry Potter now" There are more and I will post them through out the month. |

QUOTE And the unforgettable: "Snape looked as if the first person to ask him for a Love Potion would be forcefed poison." I love that one. Totally funny. When Harry asked Ron where was Snape? And they guessed maybe he's ill, maybe he's left or maybe he's been sacked. But suddenly Snape's cold voice answered them "Or maybe..." It was so funny that Snape's been listening and then answered their questions. I can picture their face expressions clearly in this scene. In the duelling club scene was very funny too. How Harry thinks that Snape gonna beat Lockhart up (which by the way Snape's so cool in this scene) Also when he calls Harry and Ron "The Dream Team" I always love this nickname. Gotta love Snape, he makes me wanna snigger. QUOTE "Make way for the Heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through ...... Percy was deeply disapproving of this behavior. "It is not a laughing matter," he said coldly. "Oh, get out of the way, Percy," said Fred. "Harry's in a hurry." "Yeah, he's off to the Chamber of Secrets for a cup of tea with his fanged servant," said George, chortling. Oh how i love Fred&George. They always find something's funny in every situation. This makes me laugh so bad. -------------------- -Lupin sprang to his feet: his chair toppled over backwards, and he glared at them so fiercely that Harry saw, for the first time ever, the shadow of the wolf upon his human face.-

In addition to all the ones mentioned, I liked the description of the chaos the pixies caused when Lockhart set them loose in class. The picture of Neville swinging from the chandelier and Lockhart hiding under the desk is very funny.

QUOTE(Shalanarah @ Feb 2 2007, 12:33 PM) Also when he calls Harry and Ron "The Dream Team" I always love this nickname. Hmm me too I also love the part at the Burrow when Molly complains bitterly to Arthur QUOTE 'Your sons flew that car to Harry's house and back last night' shouted Mrs Weasley. 'What have you got to say about that eh?' 'Did you really?' said Mr Weasley eagerly. 'Did it go alright? I-I mean' he faltered, as sparks flew from Mrs Weasley's eyes, 'that was very wrong boys - very wrong indeed ...' -------------------- |

When the teachers sorta "ganged up" on Lockhart and told him he had to go find the Chamber and rescue Ginny because he was the "expert". I like the way McGonagal approaches it. She does it again, later on with Umbridge. I think she's funny. Lockhart is such a put on...and I too know people like that. They grate my nerves.
