Here are some examples of the Philosophers Stone book cover artwork from our fabulous Leaky Galleries.
Jo Rowling actually has no input into the book artwork. The publishers give the book to an artist who comes up with their own interpretation. What do you think of the cover artwork for Philosophers Stone and also the chapter artwork that appears in the American versions and which can be viewed here in our Gallery. Do the artists acurately portray the characters you imagine when you read? Is there too much detail in the cover artwork, or not enough? Which are your favourites and which ones would put you off buying the book!!! Does the artwork actually influence which version you buy? I have two copies of Philosopher's Stone. The back of the oldest shows what I take to be a young Dumbledore. I take some were confused and wondered who this wizard was. My later edition has a very clear picture of the older Dumbledore. But I much prefer the impish brown haired wizard in the striped silk pants.

There was a long discussion about this here in the Gallery forum several months ago and I ended up contacting Auction Houses about it Rare first editions with this back cover can sell for around £35000. The younger DD does confuse me though - when did we see a young DD in the PS book? |

I hate to say it, but I personally HATE the American cover art. The develpment is terrible. We go from having a full spectrum of colors in SS, to only having blue and white in OotP. But this is just about SS. So I'll let you know my other problem with it. The fact that he has tennis shoes and jeans on, as well as some sort of cape. I mean, is that supposed to be a robe? Must say it is a bit confusing. Oh well, I suppose they do get progressively better.

I have the childrens Paperback edition of PS, with Harry at King's Cross. To me, that sums up the book. I think it is a great front page, which would encourage the reader to pick it up.
I have the "younger Dumbledore" on the back of my Audio Cassette packaging. Obviously, now, it must be a younger Dumbledore. I don't think we see a younger Dumbledore (that young) in book 1. Even when Harry was brought to Privet Drive, Dumbledore was described more or less how we know him at Hogwarts. For some reason, I imagined it to be Hagrid -------------------- ![]() (Avatar from Hagiographer13, Siggy from Dreamteam) Everybody needs a hug!! |

I have the American edition and then I have the Adult UK edition which I got for christmas. I really like the cover for the UK edition because it just shows the stone in its glory.

I really like the cover for the UK edition because it just shows the stone in its glory. Although an American, I have made it a point to get the boxed adult set to note the text differences (of which there are fewer and fewer as the series progresses!) I agree with Emily Vizi about the stark beauty of these "adult" covers. Here is Philosopher's Stone: Although not my favourite of the bunch, it is quite striking. I hope to pick up a full set of the "children's" editions during my travels to the UK this spring! -------------------- |

I've found that I like the artwork on all of the covers. The American cover is filled with whimsey, and I love the small images of the unicorn and of Fluffy. It's hard for me to choose one that I like the best, because I think each cover represents something that the artist saw and found important in each book.

A don't like the American one because it's no actuall seen or person, the British Adult cover is really good, I think it show some mystery to it, and if I was looking aroud in a book store, I would buy it for sure.

Which version is the middle one shown? It appears to be a translation copy. Are all of the translation copies the same, or does it vary country-to-country like the American/UK versions do? I kind of like all of the detail on it. ...and the comparision it makes between Dumbledore and Hogwarts (that's the part that strikes me the most).
