THIPS, Things Hidden In Plain Sight (CoS Edition), Clues to the future placed right under our noses

Here's the CoS Edition of the THIPS thread. excited.gif

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the beginning JKR has always intended the story of Harry Potter to be a seven part series. She had the entire span of the story planned out before she wrote the first book. One of the things that makes this series truly unique, from my perspective, is how interconnected all the books are with each other. Because of this there are clues Jo intentionally left laying about waiting for us to find them. She seems to revel in making us repeatedly go doh.gif! wink.gif
These 'hidden in plain sight' gems generally come in two varieties:
  1. physical objects or persons placed in the story but written in a way to make them appear as inconsequential when, in fact, they are crucial to the future plot
    For example: Mundungus Fletcher is mentioned in passing in chapter 3 of CoS. This seems a trivial aside until we get to OotP. He may have an even bigger role to play in Deathly Hallows if he has, in fact, nicked the locket from 12 Grimmauld Place.
  2. specific use of language to allude to something or someone that we, as a first time reader, weren't aware existed
    For example: Lily's Blood Sacrifice protection on 4 Privet Drive is implied by the sentence 'Harry Potter must stay where he is safe.' [Chapter 2 CoS] but we don't know that such a protection exists until the end of OotP.
THIPS may hint at something later in the same book or something that won't be revealed until a subsequent book. Maybe we can even find some THIPS that are pointing towards events yet to happen in Deathly Hallows. grin.gif
Happy THIPS hunting! excited.gif
Debbie
This one is probably pretty obvious. I happened to turn to this chapter the other day. In chapter eight, The Deathday Party, Nearly Headless Nick had convinced Peeves to drop a "large black-and-gold cabinet" to get Harry out of getting sentenced by Filch. This being the Vanishing Cabinet. (at least I hope I'm right. I can't cross reference it with HBP because I don't have it with me.)
In Chapter four, Flourish and Blotts, while Harry is in Borgin and Burkes we see not only the cursed "magnificent necklace of opals" which reappears in HBP , but also "a large black cabinet"... the vanishing cabinet perhaps?
We are introduced to one of the Horcruxes (although we didn't know then it was a Horcrux) made by LV in CoS in the form of the diary.
I remember JKR saying somewhere that CoS contained a big clue to the latter part of the series. It is probably the significance of Riddle's diary which opened the Cos being a Horcrux. ponder.gif
We are also introduced to Dobby who plays a bigger role in the books that came after CoS. Harry frees Dobby for which Dobby is very grateful to him (and he used to adore Harry to begin with) and is free now to obey whomever he likes.
And who can forget the trio having a go at polyjuice potion ? It was the forerunner of Barty Crouch Jr's impersonation of Mad-eye Moody in GoF.
Not to mention the various references to werewolves. All of us now know the reason, don't we ? wink.gif
Many times in CoS, Harry is compared to Tom Riddle. One because they look like each other. Two, because of their childhood (orphans, with muggle blood in their vein). Even Harry compares himself to Tom, when he says that in a way, he understands why Tom has denounced Hagrid (to not return in the "hated" muggle world).
Tom said in chapter 17 that there is a strange similarity between them...
So, in all the book, Rowling is repeating herself to make us understand how they're similar in a way.
But in the last chapter, DD bring to light the big thing which makes Harry really different from Voldemort : his choices.
I know it's a little "far-fetched" (is that english???), but I think that two facts (Harry being close to Voldemort, but different by his choices) will be a key for the last book.
It's happen, in a way, in OotP, when Voldemort uses Harry CHOICE to save everyone, to make him come to the MoM.
What do you think of that?
I quite enjoyed all of the things hidden in this book, perhaps more than in any other book because there are just so many of them.
I love how so many references are made about Ginny's appearance or attitude and the whole time we are led to believe that she is either extremely sensitive, or just frightened out of her wits. My favorite THIPS concerning Ginny is when Hagrid mentions that she has been seen sneaking around his cabin. I completely got sucked into thinking that it was because of her crush on Harry, rather than anything to do with the roosters.
We meet Aragog the first time in this book, which shows out to have a big importance in HBP, Harry recived Slughorns memory at Aragog's funeral.
My favourite THIP in CoS is the fact that Peeves breaks the vanishing cabinet and Filch gets all cross about it and it gets Harry out of detention.
