conf.gif Now i am curious -- an inordinate number of people say CoS is their least favorite book? Why is that? I am curious if the reasons are the same because there is certainly consensus that it is almost everyone's least favorite...(I for one love it if only for the fact it is at the end of CoS that DD says "It is our choices that make us who we are.")

I really like CoS, but it's my 5th favorite (last goes to OotP). I think it's not anybody's favorite because nothing spectacular happens in it. No humongous elaborate plot, no ultra-cool characters appear. Maybe it's the lack of Hermione. I honestly don't know.

Hurrah for censorship! Apparently I'm not allowed to say that I wasn't allowed to say something in my sig. Point is, PM me if you wanna know why I've stopped posting.

I think this book and book 6 are my favorites because there is so much background information. CoS because of the founders and HBP because of the history of Voldemort.

For me it's hard to place one book over another. I just look at the Harry Potter Books like the Lord of the Rings: It's one complete storyline.

I think people will later n time start to think of the Harry Potter Series as a whole. Since many of us have waited for books to come, or had the advantage to read 4 books at one go (like I did) - then it does give you a different perspective on preferences.

Cheers,

I love CoS. Its not my favorite, but I don't have a favorite. I think some don't like it as much because it appeals more to younger people. I think older readers find so much more in later books that they overshadow CoS Still, its very suspensefull, and very intense at the end, and hugely significant for the series as a whole. And it introduces Dobby, how could you not love that?

CoS, just doesn't stand out in my mind. I know it gives a lot of info and brings out Dobby (I love him) I guess it just doesn't "move" me like the rest of the books.

I don't know how to explain it. Sorry.

The reason it seems to be the least favorite is, as pointed out above, nothing spectacular happens in it. SS introduces the entire world of Harry Potter and the characters in it. PoA brings in Sirius and the rest of the Marauders as well as the major plot twists in it. GoF sees the return of Voldemort. OotP has the DA, the Battle in the Ministry and the prophecy. HBP has lots of new information about Voldemort's childhood and the battle at Hogwarts.

Compared to all that, CoS is not as action-packed and most of the information it gives us is more setting up things to come later. Most of what we learn in CoS aren't stand out, jaw-dropping things. I will say this, though. After reading CoS in the Reading Groups here on the Lounge, most people agreed that there was a lot more to this book and held a deeper liking for it than before we started reading.

It's too young-targeted for me.

You would say Philosopher's Stone was even more young-targeted, but it's not the same: it was the first one, my first contact with the HP universe and that was enough to make it, well, magic.

I liked CoS, especially the moment when Harry and the others step into McGonagall's office after he saved Ginny from the chamber.
A wonderfull moment right there and it gives me the chills everytime I read it.
The return of Hagrid from Azkaban is also one of those moments that I just love reading.
