Question that's been bugging me horribly since I reread the book. Why did Draco stay at Hogwarts over Christmas? It even struck the trio as odd, even though they used it to their advantage. Was he keeping an eye on the events that was unfolding to inform his dad? Or was he just nosey? Any thoughts?

Or was he hoping to meet with the heir of Slytherin and offer him help?

Perhaps showing to others that he was a pure-blood and not afraid?

But I am honestly leaning more toward the "nosy" idea.

Yeah, I think so too. Maybe he didn't want to risk missing a new attack which he cuold have done if he went home.

Maybe his parents were off somewhere and didn't want him to come. I mean, even the Weasley's go to visit Charlie one Christmas and leave their children at school. Though admittedly the Malfoy's could have afforded to bring Draco with them, so perhaps they didn't want him to come along...Mr. Malfoy doesn't strike me as the most loving parent. He seems to look at Draco more as a possesion than as a son. Draco clearly loves his parents, HBP shows this, but that's not an indication of good parents. Lucius seems to speak to Draco in Borgin and Burkes in a less than caring way. Though I suppose it could just sound that way as he's lecturing him on how he should be ashamed that Hermione beat him in every subject.

I think his parents went somewhere that Draco didn't want to go. It also gives him the oppurtunity to bully more people (the Trio for example). And of course to be nosy.

I agree with the nosy idea, and about the Malfoys maybe going somewhere Draco didn't want to go. Sure, if he had wanted to go, the Malfoys could afford it. But it is much more Malfoyish if he stayed to bully, be nosy, or even to catch a glimpse of the Heir of Slytherin.
About the Malfoy-having-lonving-parents idea, personally, I think that Narcissa loves her son (as all mothers -or most of them anyway- do), and although Lucius is not the most expressive person in "caring" matters, he surely cares for his son, which does not prevent him from showing his son off to other aristocratic families and all that stuff.

Maybe the Malfoys went somewhere Draco couldn't go. I mean to say, maybe they were doing something for You-Know-Who.

Draco may have been staying at Hogwarts for his own good. Lucius obviously didn't tell him the details about the chamber opening the first time and he probably didn't want Draco around in case friends stopped by and they were discussing the matter. Draco tends to be a bit nosy

I don't really see Lucius not wanting to bring Draco along somewhere, unless he was doing something specific for Voldemort. I mean, he brought Draco with him to Knockturn Alley, didn't he?

However, I definitely see Narcissa perhaps not wanting to be dragging Draco into danger, especially after Spinner's End.

I think that Draco stayed for Christmas by his own choice. If precious Draco wanted to stay for the holidays, I doubt that Narcissa or Lucius would make him come home. Draco most likely was hoping to come into contact with the real heir -- I think it's become evident that he has a very strong need to prove himself, almost akin to Harry. Draco, at least in his mind, has a lot to live up to. If he could associate himself with the heir, it would be a step in the right direction for him.
