I've been waiting for this topic to be introduced by someone who actually spotted a mistake in the language or flow of events in CoS. The fact that it hasn't come up yet rather indicates that there aren't any blatant errors in CoS...

Well, I couldn't think of anything either, so I checked the HP Lexicon to see if anything had been changed for later editions of the book. Among a long list of typos were two (2) continuity changes:
  • UK p190/US p257: Madam Pomfrey was bending over a fifth-year girl with long, curly hair.
    Fifth-year changed to sixth-year.
(This slight change puts Penelope Clearwater in the same year as Percy Weasley, her boyfriend.)
  • UK p245/US p332: "You can speak Parseltongue, Harry," said Dumbledore calmly, "because Lord Voldemort -- who is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin -- can speak Parseltongue..."
    Ancestor changed to descendant.
(Oh, the troubles this mistake has caused. [---] Now we know...it's officially supposed to read "descendant." There go ten or twelve really clever fan theories right out the window.)
Can anyone come up with any others? peek.gif

I don't know if this is a mistake, or if the Weasley's just have two different clocks. But the clock described in this book is different than the one we saw in later books.

"The clock on the wall opposite him had only one hand and no numbers at all. Written around the edge were things like Time to make tea, Time to feed the chickens, and You're late.

I noticed. When I was reading my copy. read.gif The part with Percy catching Ron and Harry from coming out of the bathroom. Percy had been chanced to Perry. Is it just my copy? Or it is a spelling error? conf.gif

Wow Bubblez, I never noticed that before. When I read your post, I checked my copy. On US p.157, Percy is written as Perry once. I think this is just a typo that hasn't been caught yet.

"Yes, sir"
"There's no need to call me sir, Professor."

It's in my book too, and I got CoS just two years ago...so its a typo that's been around for awhile, but just hasnt been fixed...
Also Percy is refered to Perce at times, which I can see as a short-hand way of calling Percy - I dont see it as a typo really (if it is or not)

Its funny isn't it? I mean the editors should be a little more careful publishing a book that has been so successful. Wouldn't they have noticed it?

Maybe. Although it is a very difficult book to edit, because you have to keep every other book in the series in mind so it stays consistant. But for typos like that, the eye just sort of glosses over it, and the editors can't be perfect. I sure didn't notice the mistake with Percy's name until it was mentioned here, and it says the same thing in my book.

I noticed this as well. At first I started doubting my memory, thinking I was overlapping scenes from the movies. But yes, the clock does appear to be quite different as time goes by. Perhaps it's Molly who is changing it herself to more appropriately suit her needs. It certainly takes on darker tones (and has more hands) later in the stories.

I don't currently have CoS so I can't check, but when Harry and Ron are flying the car to Hogwarts do they ever take breaks? Because it must be pretty tiring to be driving all day to Scotland, especially for 12-year-olds!

If I'm remembering correctly, one clock is in the kitchen, the other in the living room. They just have two special clocks. biggrin.gif
