Nargles...there's a lot of controversy surrounding these little creatures [not really]. So, are they just an invention of the eccentric mind of Xenophilius and Luna Lovegood? Or are they real and, if so, why are they not in the 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'?

But if they are just in Luna's head...does that mean they aren't real? Didn't Dumbledore say something along the lines of "It is just in your head, but why should that mean it is not real?"

So, what are your opinions on nargles?

Also, feel free to discuss Snorkacks also...I firmly believe they are real...I love the idea of crumple-horned purple hippos.

from the Bloomsbury Live Chat last July 30:

JKR: "Luna became a very famous wizarding naturalist who discovered and classified many new species of animals (though, alas, she never did find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack)"

But just because Luna never found one, that doesn't mean they don't exist - eh, Jeaneai? (A Wink and a Big Grin)

Anyone who has kissed beneath mistletoe and had to remove nargles from their hair will confirm the existence of these pesky little critters.
IMO, to believe otherwise is heresy. wink.gif

I just want to know what her reasons to believe in them are. Appearantly they are something that can be found, and not just in her head because then she wouldn't bother looking for them.
I just wonder if she has any real reason, or does she just believe it because her daddy told her. She should Veritaserum him.

As for me, I don't think they exist. At least not until proven otherwise. When it comes to facts, I trust Hermione.

Scoff you might, but in actual fact new species of animal are being discovered all the time in the Muggle world. Just to cite a very few examples, a new monkey species was discovered in the mountains of East Africa in 2003 (there are so few of them that they are endangered); three new species of salamander were discovered in Costa Rica just this month (they haven't even been named yet); the Dec. 2001 issue of the esteemed Science magazine has a paper in it on a brand new species of squid discovered in the deep waters of several oceans (oh my gosh! can it be related to the Giant Squid?).

Perhaps Jo had this phenomenon in mind when she wrote the characters of Luna and her father. Not that everything they believe necessarily exists, but all it takes is a dedicated naturalist or biologist (ie - Luna and her husband) to seek out and document new species. The scientific mind is a searching mind and an open mind. If anybody's going to rewrite "Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them" for Hermoine's children to use as a textbook, it will be someone like Luna Scamander.

Interesting, Laura W. I wonder if she finally found a nargle.

Maybe she found a snorkack, but had a sudden change in judgement and decided not to tell anyone? Maybe Snorkacks have that effect on people, like anti-muggle charms that make them have sudden changes in plans so that they have to leave?
And I love that she's Luna Scamander now.

Well, she admits, I think, that's she's never seen a snorkack. And the thestrals are real, and certified by the MOM as being real...but I don't think Luna's seen more than Harry in terms of experience, really...but we don't know for certain.

And yes, I love Luna and her loopiness. I can totally relate to her because I'm very similar to her in real life.

We don't know whether Nargles exist or not. They might be an invention of Luna or her father, but they may be the creature for which there are no confirmed reports, and Luna subsequently manages to prove they really do exist. The Luna we see at school believes stuff on little or no evidence, but that doesn't mean what she believes is all false (for example she believed in Harry when few others did, and was proved right).
