Dumbledore, as you know, left Harry on the Dursley's doorstep for Petunia to find that morning. Did he put a spell on Harry to keep him there? And to keep him safe? At 15 months old, Harry would have been walking - if he waked during the night, he could have wandered off. There were also the neighbour's cats or dogs who would want to investigate an unusual bundle (unless they were tied up or kept inside for the night).

Did Hagrid feed and/or change Harry before bringing him to Privet Drive? If not, Harry would definately have woken before morning.

I know that I should have thought of this years ago when I first read PS, but my excuse is that I had forgotten how adventurous a 15-m-old can be. Having just re-read PS (for the umpteenth time), and spent the day with my 16-m-old granddaughter, I started to worry about how far she could wander if left alone for more than thirty seconds.

We all know that Harry is adventurous, please tell me that Dumbledore put spells around Harry to keep him safe while on the doorstep.

I am sure that DD put protective charms over Harry just in case he woke up early or something. DD is a responsible wizard so I am sure he made sure Harry was safe and besides I would think McGongall would probably be watching close by because she didn't trust the Dursleys.

When I think of it, its like a new adventure waiting to be explored. Everything that humankind discovers or tries to figure out leaves nothing for the IMAGINATION because there are FACTS to prove you right or wrong. But the afterlife makes you wonder: what next?

Dumbledore placed Arabella Figg, undercover, on Privet Drive to watch over and protect Harry. She was a Squibb but she was also a member of the Order of the Phoenix. I'm sure he also placed some protective charms around baby Harry too.

Imo, Alysaw is 100% correct. Mrs. Figg must have been living on Privet for some time. She would have been a natural to keep an eye on Harry, not just for the few hours before the Dursleys found Harry, but over the years. She was a "perfect" baby sitter; and with more on the ball than first appears. Excelent OP, MaggieAnn!

Thank you everyone. I had forgotten Mrs Figg, as she is not mentioned that early in the books, and although I originally thought that Prof. McGonagall had stayed overnight in her transfigured form, the text reads: "..... and the twelve balls of light sped back to their street lamps so that Privet Drive glowed suddenly orange and he (Dumbledore) could make out a tabby cat slinking around the corner at the other end of the street." To me, this implied the she had left, but you are correct, they are responsible wizards and would not leave a baby alone.

Dumbledore would never leave Harry alone and unprotected on the Dursley's doorstep. He was probably more protected there, than he was once he was brought inside.. I don't know when Mrs. Figg was brought in as a protecter, but she certainly did a good job for years.

It seems as if Dumbledore tried to think of everything he could for Harry's safety, and he mainly did, except for the unfortunate personalities of the Dursleys themselves.

Becuase it was the middle of the night
Uncle Vernon would probably yell and scream
not wanting to keep harry
Much less stress for dumbledore i think,
just leaving a letter

As for harry wandering about it the night,
Hagrid was the one who got harry, and it never mentions in the book Dumbledore
preforming any type of spell on harry, so im really clueless about that
our best guess is Ms. Figg watched over him.

I think he wanted to make it more difficult for Petunia to refuse to take Harry in, I have the feeling that had Dumbledore handed Harry over to Petunia, Petunia would hand him straight back, but if Petunia has to, say, write back to Dumbledore to collect Harry, that gives her longer to think about it and see the merits in Dumbledore's reasoning.
But there would be some protection on Harry on the doorstep - we know Dumbledore placed the Privet Drive protection charm on Harry, so he could have added more short term protections at the same time, but it may be that Harry's Privet Drive protection comes into force provisionally until Petunia makes a decision whether to keep Harry or not, and that would also protect Harry from at least some dangers.
