We know Bellatrix beat Sirius and Molly beat Bellatrix, can this automatically lead us to believe that Molly would have beaten Sirius in a duel

Not to take anything away from Molly, but I think that the only reason she was able to defeat Bellatrix was because of the immediate threat to her only daughter. We hear from Arthur in DH that in times of great need, wizards can generate magic that they would normally be incapable of. Bella and Sirius are very closely matched skill-wise, in normal situations, so that duel could have gone either way. Also, under normal circumstances, both Bella and Sirius would be able to take down Molly, but threaten one of her children, and she could probably muster the power to take down LV!

Under normal circumstances, O fellow geek tongue.gif , I still don't know that either Bella or Sirius would be able to take down Molly! The obstacle to hazarding a guess at the outcome of any such duel is that we simply don't know enough about Molly's skills at the magic one uses in conflict. We really don't have that much specific information on either Bella's or Sirius' duelling strategies or abilities either, but we do know from their histories in the first Voldemortian conflict that they are both powerful and skilled at magical conflict.

I do agree with you than if a witch or wizard of any level, even as exceptional as LV, threatened one of her children, that aggressor should fear her (and if Arthur was present, the aggressor should be equally fearful of him).

Also, we need to remember that Bellatrix's wand had been stolen, so she was using an unfamiliar wand at the Battle of Hogwarts.

Well back in the DOM, weren't the DE's the only ones who were actually trying to kill?
I'm sure Sirius could have AK'd Bella had he wanted to. And if Molly hadn't done it DH, she most likely would not have won.
So I think neither of the situations says anything about how strong Molly and Sirius really are compared to each other.

Well apart from dont laugh when your dueling... we saw that if you underestimate your opponent you will probably pay... i got the impression that Sirius thought he was untouchable when dueling Bella whereas Bella didnt see Molly as a threat, however i think Bella and Sirius are probably both better at dueling than Molly.

Yeah, Sirius got a bit complacent against Bella and paid the price, then Bella made the same mistake against Molly. Obviously there was no way Molly was gonna start getting casual.

But in saying that, it was part of Sirius' and Bella's personalities to be a bit over-confident, even arrogant, whereas you could never say that about Molly. So maybe Molly could beat Sirius, not because of superior skill, but by Sirius under-estimating her.

This doesn't really determine anything.
Molly beat Bellatrix because of the threat to Ginny and this fired her up.
Sirius was in immediate battle and it was a different situation.
Basically both Sirius and Molly ad different mental concentrations in their battles.

I don't think that molly would of beat sirius in a duel. I think that sirius was probably a more experienced dueller than molly who's duelling action was negligent pre DH. I don't believe that molly would of beaten bellatrix in their duel had it not been for the imminent danger of her daughter and bella's taunts about her dead son. I imagine those things combined led to molly being so fired up that she duelled beyond her normal capabilities. Will a mother not do anything to save her children from harm.

Sirius took on Bellatrix to provide cover for the others. He wasn't trying to kill her, and Molly took on Bellatrix with the intentions of killing her. I don't think killing Bellatrix crossed his mind--he just wanted to keep her busy and away from Harry and Neville. I think had Sirius lived, Lupin and Dumbledore would have given him the same speech Lupin gives Harry about shooting to kill or at least disable.

I wonder if, before they became true enemies, Bellatrtix and Sirius sparred at family gatherings. I got the distinct impression that this was a familiar contest between the cousins. I'm not certain that Bellatrix was trying to kill Sirius either--she doesn't use an AK--in the book. The light is red which suggest a stunner or Crucio to the chest--which can probably kill. Still, she felt she very well matched: she defended herself to Voldemort by saying she was battling the Animagus Black, as if that mattered.

I have trouble imagining Molly and Sirius fighting, but it would depend on which version of Sirius Molly encountered: Sirius before or after Azkaban, and it would depend on why they are fighting each other. If they wre just dueling for fun, I think Molly would have the advantage because Sirius seemed to like the contest part of battle, and Molly would possbily fight like Hermione--just knock her opponent down or out.
