A good idea? A section, where new members can ask questions, test sigs and Avatars, and figure out how the forum works by asking both the staff and other members. ^_^ Just a thought, I got a lot more ideas coming this way By simply reading an FAQ or a list of Rules, the new member does not Intereact and find out things from actual members. By allowing new members to ask questions, it increases confidence in the other fourm members when they are answered ^_^ Just an idea.

Mmm-hmm, like Moose_Starr said, that forum is really the Knockturn Alley forum. We also have the S'up, Figgy? thread for new members to introduce themselves in.
Is there something that is we've overlooked that could improve the new user experience?

Possibly, It's not very obvious that it is for new members ^_^ It seems more like a bugs/glitches section at first glance. Another suggestion is sending a welcome PM to the new members with a link to Nocturn alley, describing why it's there and directing them to there with any questions etc. Example:
QUOTE Welcome to the Leaky Lounge, your resource for everything about Harry Potter! If you have any questions, or need help creating an Avatar or Signature, simply click the following link: Nocturn Alley- Questions and Bugs, There you will find any answers you need, Including: How do I make a Signature? Fantastic Avatars and Where to find them etc.. Have a Nice Day! *Insert Mod name here*
Just An Example ^_^ Also, a nice thing to have is a guide on how to make a sig by yourself. I've written one up that many people find quite useful, PM me if you'd like to see it. ^_^ ~Arc~

QUOTE(Arcalus @ Mar 18 2008, 04:16 PM) Also, a nice thing to have is a guide on how to make a sig by yourself. I've written one up that many people find quite useful, PM me if you'd like to see it. When you say sig, do you mean an image? There are many threads such as the fantastic avatars and where to find them for people to find already made ones, as well as an Avatar Help! thread with all things avatars, a GIMP thread with questions and answers on banners, a spot where you can request your own banners, made by two very lovely LL members willing to make others banners, and lastly a thread on "Creating your own avatars; tricks of the trade."
If you don't mean images, signatures are covered in the FAQ here.
However, I do agree with you that the forum does seem very bug-oriented. The description reads:
QUOTE Took a wrong turn? Run into problems, bugs, kinks, a fingernail vendor with mossy teeth? Post here if you have a forum related bug that needs fixing, or if you are just looking for help locating a thread on your favorite Harry Potter topic. A lot of it seems bug related, but the last part is good for members needing help. But it honestly doesn't cove r the fact that the forum holds the Q&A thread nor the avatar thread and other helpful stuff it does have. Just some insight

^_^ thanks for the input. Even though I know those links are there, not everyone else does. Still, a welcome letter of some sort, letting the new member know where and how to find help, does seem neccesary. I agree with the last part of your post, It's not very noticable or obvious that it's a Q&A thread for new members Needs to be more obvious.

We actually send out an e-mail to the newest members once a week, which includes links to things like these threads and the KA forum. You should get it within the week, Arcalus, and that will help you find your way around. We don't send it every day, since someone has to manually start it each time and that would be tedious on us to do that every day.
We don't usually hear from new members about questions that could've been answered in the Knockturn Alley's threads; they usually find the links in the forum fairy e-mail or our forum fairies themselves will contact the member if they seem confused. The forum fairies are moderators who have this image below their avatars:

Does that address your concerns?

Mostly, I know my way around Though I think others would have it much harder than I do. Some may not stick around for a week, because they are already confused and lost, or don't have the conifidence to talk to a mod. If getting someone to send a letter is your problem, that can be fixed. (I'd gladly do it) ^_^ Any other ideas? Just a thought.
