There are probably more spin-offs of Pride and Prejudice than maybe any other novel ever written. There have been novels written about Elizabeth and Darcy's married life, about Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view, there are updated versions of the story such as Bridget Jones' Diary and non-English films such as the acclaimed Bride & Prejudice.

I loved Bridget Jones' Diary, even though poor Bridget had none of the refinements of behaviour that Elizabeth has. Mark Darcy could so easily be a descendent of Fitzwilliam Darcy (and not just because they're both played by Colin Firth heart.gif ), he has the same reserved nature, he is willing to do anything for the woman he loves but doesn't want her to know he's helped her in case she loves him out of gratitude rather than for himself. How do you think it compares?

What do you think of other spin-offs?

What have you seen or read and enjoyed, or not?

Do you have any recommendations for others to read or see?

I just finished Pamela Aidan's Gentleman Darcy series...or Darcy is a Gentleman...drat, just took the books back and now I can't remember what they are called, but I know the author is correct, at least. Anyway, I really enjoyed this trilogy, but it took me a bit to get over the additions to what really happened. The second book of this trilogy was good until the ending few chapters. Austen was all about everyday life, and this novel tried to do too much by creating action, and it felt false.

It's always a bit of a shock to know a book so well, and then have something added to it. The first time I saw Colin Firth Darcy jump into that pond I almost threw something at the TV...now, I don't mind so much devil.gif

I've read some of spin-offs mostly because a co-worker of mine buys/reads every Jane Austen spin-off book there is.

Personally, none of them compare remotely to the book. They're either too modernized (while trying to stay during the time period) or just not well-written. I have enjoyed them overall, though. It's kind of fun to read what people think happened afterwards.

I've read Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife by Linda Berdoll (definitely PG-13, almost R), Darcy and Elizabeth by Linda Berdoll (sequel to the other), Mr. Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange, and The man who loved Jane Austen by Sally Smith O'Rouke

Grange's book is interesting because you'll read along what Darcy is feeling, but then you'll come across a passage that reminds you a lot of the actual book! I thought she did it pretty well, though I did sometimes find myself a little bored.

O'Rouke's book isn't so much of a spin-off as a completely other story. It's basically playing along with the whole speculation that Jane Austen loved a man like Darcy or where did she meet a man like Darcy in her lifetime. It's primarily set in modern time. Don't expect a story of Darcy and Elizabeth, expect of a story of JANE AUSTEN and a man like Darcy, their story, and a modern day woman.

I've enjoyed Berdoll's the most, so far, but they're definitely for adults! I think they go the most in-depth into the other characters and what happened to them.

I really enjoyed Being Elizabeth Bennet (I believe it's called Lost in Austen in the US), a pick-a-path book where you try to marry for love and fortune as Lizzy. It diverts into most of Austen's other works and even introduces her apparent real-life love interest. I first heard about it because Sue made a thread about it and I am in love. It's so fun to try and work through every path to love or disaster the book presents.

I have not read these, actually I did not know that they existed until now...

I googled to find out about 'Darcy's story', and have to say it sounds like fanfiction published in a book. But then, I guess that is exactly what it is, and not necesarry a bad thing. Did you like the books? I am wondering if I should add them to my very long list of books I want to read...

The only one I believe I've seen is Bridget Jones's diary. I thought both the book and film were hilarious and really well done, and I like the fact that it's completely modernized - nothing feels awkward, Helen Fielding just borrowed a great plot and had fun with it. Bravo for her!

Ahhhhh, I've heard of that but didn't know what it was. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on it, as it sounds like a fun read.

The non Jane austen 'Pemberly' is an ok read, set after Pride and predjudice but not a fantastic book. If you love pride and predjudice then give it a go. The problem with long dead authors is that there is never any hope of anything else, you have to rely on these.

I really recommend Darcys story. I loved it. The whole story retold from Darcys point of view. The man who adapted Pride and Predjudice for the BBC version in the 90's read it and used it in his work. It is very well written and I find myself re-reading it as often as the original P+P. however I love fanfiction and spin off books so many not the person to judge. But if you ever see it in a second hand shop then get it!
