Much has been speculated about witches and wizards coming back as ghosts. I have not heard any discussion about other magical creatures coming back as ghosts. I suppose you could argue that the Thestrals can be considered ghostly- only to be seen by those who have seen death, but we have not seen "creature" ghosts in the books. I would have liked for Dobby to come back as a ghost and remain a "free elf" at Hogwarts. What do you think- can magical creatures come back as ghosts if they chose?

Correct nearly headless nick did say only wizards may come back as ghosts. To be honest I couldnt imagine a house elf wanting to come back as a ghost. Id rather stay beyond the veil where I assume they are finally free of the bondage they were chained to in life.

That's really interesting. They might be able to, or maybe it is only a privalege that Wizards and Witches have. However, have you noticed that everyone who is a ghost died in a state of distress and sadness?

very true:

Nick: execution

Ravenclaw: killed by Baron

Baron: killed himself

it does seem that way huh.gif

Well, Nick does tell Harry in OOTP that only wizards can come back as ghosts. That disqualifies Dobby because Dobby's an elf even if he could do elf-magic. elf.gif
I somehow don't think that dying in a state of distress or sadness has anything to do with becoming a ghost though.

The above list does make a good case, but it cannot be taken as a representation of the whole. We do not know anything about the circumstances of the death of the Fat Friar for one. Moreover, if distress and sadness were an important criteria, James and Lily would certainly have come back as ghosts. The last moments of their lives were as distressing as it could get with an evil maniac bursting into their house bent upon killing their only son.

All in all, I would have to go with Nick's explanation of why some people come back as ghosts and some don't. People who are not afraid to take the next step go on and those that prefer the known to the unknown choose to come back as a pale imitation of their living selves. smile.gif

there is actually mention of animals as ghosts, the headless hunt rode horses on at least one occasion maybe two, during the battle for hogwarts and @ Nick's deathday party, i think. ponder.gif

Well if someone came back as a ghost, it would probably because they felt they had some unfinished with the living ...

doesn't Nick talk to Harry about something like this after Dumbledore or posibly Sirius dies, Harry wonders why someone stay behind as ghosts (probably hoping whoever died might come back) and Nick says something like; you wouldn't want anyone to stay behind, it's not natrual, they'd be better off going wherever dead ppl goes... not sure about this though, but I think its something like this

anyway my point was it seems it's the soul that stays behind (or posibly leaves a imprint or something like that) so it would have to be a inteligent, self-aware creature that could be ghosts, so that would probably rule out creaatures like dragons, thestrals etc...

house-elves would certanly be "smart enough" to be ghosts, but i doubt they would want to, most live their whole life in service of their master and like it, therefor doesn't need to stay behind, but with exceptions like Dobby it would be possible...

as for the headless hunter and his horse, it might be that he was rather attached to it, so he just stayed? IDK might be like their clothes, and stuff they've got, even though their dead...

There you go... Dobby was "smart enough" to be a ghost- he was well capable of making his own decisions in the end. He was different from other elves, starting when he went against his master and tried to save Harry from harm and then by wanting to be free and taking employment at Hogwarts. So, continuing in this pattern, why couldn't Dobby come back as a ghost? He may have wanted to live at Harry's house! But, seriously, I don't remember reading anywhere in the books where it says other creatures can't become ghosts.
