THE DIARYCRUX

Tom Riddle's piece of soul sneered at Ginny, who, like many a young girl, turned to a diary to vent her feelings about being the youngest child of a family of seven children where she is the only girl. Ginny has also nursed a crush on the famous Harry Potter, now her elder brother, Ron's, best friend. Ginny has started in her first year at Hogwarts, and at the age of 11 is at the right age for especially lonely and isolated girls, to turn to whatever comfort is at hand, such as keeping a diary in the small black book she found inside one of her textbooks.

Harry has a history of using second hand things, as do all of the Weasley children. And so, like much of Ginny's belongings, the diary she confides in is a second hand one, with the name of T. M. Riddle written on it, and otherwise left conveniently blank. Just as her brother Ron started school with his brother Charlie's second hand wand, his brother Bill's second hand robes and his brother Percy's second hand pet, Ginny also has to make do with hand-me-downs. Including the harmless-looking diary she so opportunely finds sandwiched in her hand-me-down transfiguration textbook. Left there by one Lucius Malfoy, Draco's father.

Now young girls aren't the only ones who keep diaries. Men do, too. Sometimes they are referred to as 'little black books', which often give clues to their romantic lives, or their exploits, sometimes at other people's expense. Aren't those seven textbooks of Gilderoy Lockhart nothing better than seven volumes of his own personal diary as he would have liked it to be? And isn't the information hidden so secretly in Tom Riddle's diary, just as self-serving and self-promoting as any of Gilderoy's books? Tom Riddle only wants his audience, Ginny or Harry, to see what he wants them to see.

But just how dangerous is this unknown little black book? How did this object work to ensnare Ginny, and traduce Hagrid? What else could be learned about Tom Riddle's diary?

What Muggle lessons could also be drawn from Mr Weasley's comment, 'Never trusting something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brains'?

Why does JKR show how perilous it could be to use second-hand objects? Even ones where the previous owner is known and trusted, such as Ron's second-hand wand, inherited from Charlie?

Why did Harry get the feeling that T.M. Riddle might have been a friend from when he was very small? What does this clue suggest about how the series will end?

What do we learn about T.M. Riddle, himself, that is crucial to the series?

Why do you think Lucius had possession of this dark item?

Why didn't Lucius sell the little diary along with other belongings he was clearly wanting to get rid of at Borgin and Burke's? And why did he plant this diary on Ginny, in particular?

What was significant about Moaning Myrtle's death? Why did Tom Riddle kill Moaning Myrtle, anyway? Was it necessary? Why her, and not one of the other students whom Tom Riddle had terrorised with his experiments with releasing the Basilisk?

Most of the other Horcruxes were precious objects, valued and treasured magical heirlooms, but why did Voldemort place so much value on this object?

Do feel welcome to answer all or any of these questions among many you might like to discuss, or perhaps you may prefer to ask questions of your own about the Diarycrux.

Tom said that Ginny had shared her emotions in the diary, and that is what gave him power to possess her. Emotions, love/hate/fear, play a big part in magic. Using these emotions enabled him to come to life and to eventually draw on her own life force. Showing Harry what happened to Hagrid was Toms way of trying to throw Harry off the trail.

What Muggle lessons could also be drawn from Mr Weasley's comment, 'Never trusting something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brains'?
Never blindly trust something, no matter how good it seems. My question is though is where is the “brain” to the talking mirrors, or portraits, or any of the other magical items that seem to think for themselves?

Why does JKR show how perilous it could be to use second-hand objects? Even ones where the previous owner is known and trusted, such as Ron's second-hand wand, inherited from Charlie?
It is best to use items that are meant for you, and items that you know the source of where they come from.

Why did Harry get the feeling that T.M. Riddle might have been a friend from when he was very small? What does this clue suggest about how the series will end?
I think the part of soul in Harry felt a connection with the diary (THIPS). This was a clue to the nature of Harrys link with LV.

What do we learn about T.M. Riddle, himself, that is crucial to the series?
The 16 year old Tom shows his arrogance and sense of superiority. He does not see how Harry could defeat him as a baby, nor does he believe that Harry could defeat his monster, and laughs when Fawkes brings the sorting hat to him. Then in the middle of gloating over Harrys poisoning, he then realizes that the Phoenix tears can heal him. He is so confident about his position that he reveals who he really is and how he framed Hagrid, certain that Harry would not survive. LV shows the same arrogance latter on in the other books.

Why do you think Lucius had possession of this dark item?
I think it was left for him to take care of.

Why didn't Lucius sell the little diary along with other belongings he was clearly wanting to get rid of at Borgin and Burke's? And why did he plant this diary on Ginny, in particular?
While fiddling with it one time he wrote in it, and found out what it was. The 16 year old Riddle would not have known of the other horcruxes and may have asked Lucius to pass the diary on to someone at Hogwarts who could be manipulated by it. Arthur Weasley was raiding his home looking for dark objects, that is partly why they got into a scuffle at the book store. This was part convenience and part revenge to discredit the Weasley family.

What was significant about Moaning Myrtle's death? Why did Tom Riddle kill Moaning Myrtle, anyway? Was it necessary? Why her, and not one of the other students whom Tom Riddle had terrorised with his experiments with releasing the Basilisk?
I think that Myrtle was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She saw Tom releasing the monster and would have told on him. She may also have been a muggleborn. After she was killed he sent the snake back, and after he realized the school may close he framed Hagrid and sent the monster back.

Most of the other Horcruxes were precious objects, valued and treasured magical heirlooms, but why did Voldemort place so much value on this object?
This was his first one, and the diary worked to serve two purposes. Contain his horcrux and his memory so that he could get someone else to open the chamber of secrets.

I thought it worked like a Pensieve. But unlike the Pensieve it told lies, somehow. Hagrid never opened the Chamber of Secrets nor did he rear Werewolf cubs. The bit of Tom Riddle in the diary also bewitched Ginny to do what he wanted it to do and must have done something to stop her remembering it.

What Muggle lessons could also be drawn from Mr Weasley's comment, 'Never trusting something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brains'?

That unseen correspondents like the bit of Tom Riddle may seem okay but may not be well intentioned or meant to be.

Why does JKR show how perilous it could be to use second-hand objects? Even ones where the previous owner is known and trusted, such as Ron's second-hand wand, inherited from Charlie?

Second-hand objects may not be as reliable, may break down and may develop problems for the user, especially if the previous owner is not known or if the previous owner didn't tell the truth about its capabilities. Or if they plant second-hand things on you just to get rid fo them like Lucious

What do we learn about T.M. Riddle, himself, that is crucial to the series?

You could make a whole list of what we learn. Tom Riddle was Lord Voldemort. He was Head Boy and won awards for being a good student. He got a special award for dobbing in Hagrid and for telling lies about him. And I think he killed Moaning Myrtle deliberately. After all, Ron said that might have been a public service.

Tom Riddle was a parselmouth, that he liked snaky things, and he also made the first Horcrux with the diary, using Moaning Myrtle's death. He did it deliberately, having failed to kill anyone else previously, and that he thought Hagrid was a good person to take all the blame for whatever he did. We also found out that he liked to see someone else get the blame for things he did and tghat Hagrid wasn't going to be the only one like that.

Why do you think Lucius had possession of this dark item?

Lucius was jsut the sort of person to hang around with Tom Riddle and so Tom Riddle gave him all his school things?

Why didn't Lucius sell the little diary along with other belongings he was clearly wanting to get rid of at Borgin and Burke's? And why did he plant this diary on Ginny, in particular?

I wonder what Borgin might have done with the diary. Wouldn't he have brought it to the notice of the authorities?

If you imagine that the transfer of the soul fragment would not have taken place, then Harry would have been unable to open the Chamber, the Diarycrux would have worked infinitely and Voldemort would have been unable to be killed. Moreover, Dumbledore claims that only the destroyed Diary got him on the track of the Horcruxes so CoS turn out to be the most important part of the whole story.

But just how dangerous is this unknown little black book? How did this object work to ensnare Ginny, and traduce Hagrid? What else could be learned about Tom Riddle's diary?

at the time i read this before knowledge of the horcruxes. I thought the diary just had special magical properties that could posess the people who read it.

What Muggle lessons could also be drawn from Mr Weasley's comment, 'Never trusting something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brains'?

Well nowadays in muggle schools. The popular kids are always doing things and telling people to do things for them like they control them.

Why does JKR show how perilous it could be to use second-hand objects? Even ones where the previous owner is known and trusted, such as Ron's second-hand wand, inherited from Charlie?

I think JKR showed us this because it helps us to expect the unexpected more in real life. Also like the Rat scabbers ron inherited from percy.

What do we learn about T.M. Riddle, himself, that is crucial to the series?

Well we Learn his Real name. Instead of Lord Voldemort Harry Learns his real name. and that name would help in the future as harry used dumbledores pensieve

Why do you think Lucius had possession of this dark item?

Lol lucius is a Malfoy that should be pretty self explanitory. one of You-Know-Whos old death eaters.

Why didn't Lucius sell the little diary along with other belongings he was clearly wanting to get rid of at Borgin and Burke's? And why did he plant this diary on Ginny, in particular?

I think Lucius Knew the powers of the book and wanted to get rid of a weasely or who he thought might be potters little girlfriend

What was significant about Moaning Myrtle's death? Why did Tom Riddle kill Moaning Myrtle, anyway? Was it necessary? Why her, and not one of the other students whom Tom Riddle had terrorised with his experiments with releasing the Basilisk?

I think it was just a case of Moaning myrtle being in the wrong place at the wrong time

Most of the other Horcruxes were precious objects, valued and treasured magical heirlooms, but why did Voldemort place so much value on this object?

It appears to me as if this object was important to his past. Most people keep their diaries and journals keep them. Mybe thats what tom wanted to do is to put a peice of himself into his diary. Maybe he knew it would give the diary magical properties.

Hang on, lemme dig up that quote...

"...Lucius was supposed to wait for Voldemort's say-so, and he never received it, for Voldemort vanished shortly after giving him the diary...I understand that Voldemort had told him the diary would cause the Chamber of Secrets to reopen because it was cleverly enchanted...By planting the diary upon Arthur Weasley's daughter, he hoped to discredit Arthur and get rid of a highly incriminating magical object in one stroke."

-Dumbledore, HBP p.508

So that's that.

The diary, innocuous as it seemed from the surface, was an extermely dangerous item and that's putting it mildly. It is amazing even for Voldemort to fashion an object so as to enable it to worm its way into people's affections and start feeding off their energies. Brrr ! Scary ! Something that you trust, you like, that you depend upon is actually undermining your whole existence !

Like Riddle later explains, Ginny put her soul into the diary and that empowered the diary till one day, it overrode her wishes and started making her do the things it wanted done. I think what Riddle said in other words was that trusting someone to the extent of telling them all your best-kept secrets was very dangerous. That's what happened to the Potters - they entrusted Pettigrew with their most valuable secret and gave him the power over them.

Inasmuch as I don't agree with Voldemort's views on the whole, he did get a few things right. One must be completely sure of the object or person one divulges one's secrets and fears to, or they will be used for bringing about one's downfall sooner or later. Be it in the wizarding wolrd, or the muggle world, this holds true everywhere. So does Arthur's dictum about being wary of things and people that seem to have powers coming from mysterious sources. If one doesn't know how an object is powered, one will not know how to tackle it if and when necessary. One may succeed by accident, but it is not very prudent to run things on the basis of lucky chance everytime. smile.gif

Isn't that just like Lucius, though? He wouldn't let his own son handle the diary. We know that because Draco didn't recognise it when Harry's bag broke. But Lucius didn't mind if Ginny got hurt. Because she was a girl? Would Lucius have planted it on one of the other Weasleys?

Well Voldemort would know wouldn't he? That is the way bullies operate sometimes don't they? They learn the secrets of their victims so that they can use the information against them later on. But shouldn't LV have taken his own advice? It wasn't confiding all Voldie's secrets to Lucius to entrust him with the diary, but Lucius' very surname means 'Bad faith' doesn't it? Lucius was normally out for number 1 so trusting him with anything was a risk.

its easy to see ,the diary lets Ginny to do lots of things such as write words on the wall ,but Ginny cannot remember what she had done .isn't it dangerous enough?

At first ,Ginny wrote things about herself ,about her family ,about harry ,and Tom made himself seem like a good listener ,and really catchde little Ginny's heart ,and let

herself tell more and more ,but certainly tom wouldnot be interested in those little things ,so quickly he controlde Ginny to do things that tom had to do ,and wiped her

memories about what she had done .but she still found that there must be sth wrong with her ,so she put the diary into the toilet ,and wanted it to disappear .but harry

found it by accident ,that did make tom be active

lucius didn't sell the diary ,i think ,was because he really knew that how important it was ,things like the diary ,we have enough reasons to believe that Voldemort must

be really careful on it ,so he must tell lucius to take care of it ,but clearly ,lucius didn't think that his lord would be back ,he just wanted to clean himself ,and took the ]

things which belonged to voldemort away.but i still don't think that leave the important diary of Voledmort to a little girl is a smart choice.

and the reason of moaning myrtle 's death ,i could only say that she had seen the eyes of the snake ,nobody could be alive after he saw the green eyes of that monster directly.

Many will say that in todays world people put to much fate in technology and machines, so this could be a warning not to be to dependent on them

QUOTE

Why do you think Lucius had possession of this dark item?

Because Lucius was one of L.V closest followers, so I think he was asked to keep it safe for voldemort...

QUOTE

What do we learn about T.M. Riddle, himself, that is crucial to the series?

We learned a lot about Tom because of this diary, for one Tom Riddle= Voldemort, Voldemort started at a early age his quest for imortailty, he was already as a teenager advanced with dark and evil magic, he was both smart and well spoken, many liked him, but he was already then evil... and he's the heir of Slytherin!

QUOTE

Why did Tom Riddle kill Moaning Myrtle, anyway? Was it necessary? Why her, and not one of the other students whom Tom Riddle had terrorised with his experiments with releasing the Basilisk?

I don't think there was a particular reason she was murdered, she was just unlucky, wrongplace at the wrong time... I don't even think he planned it, he just had to cover up when she heard him, couldn't risk getting caught!
QUOTE

probably didnt want to keep it, would be rather incriminating (he pretended beeing under the imperius curse)should anyone find out he had it... Couldn't let it go to wast though could he? so planting it on a student seemd like a great idea probably...
