"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me. You can keep you bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall, For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat And I can cap them all. There's nothing hidden in your head The Sorting Hat can't see, So try me on and I will tell you Where you ought to be. You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart; You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true And unafraid of toil; Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you're a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind; Or perhaps in Slytherin You'll make your real friends, Those cunning folk use any means To achieve their ends. So put me on! Don't be afraid! And don't get in a flap! You're in safe hands (though I have none) For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
Everyone applauded when the Sorting Hat's song was finished. The hat bowed to each of the four tables, and then it became still. (Chap. 7 pg. 118) (Ron was relieved to find out all they have to do was try on the Sorting Hat. (Ron- Chap. 7 pg. 118 "So we've just got to try on the hat! I'll kill Fred, he was going on about wrestling a troll.") Harry thought the hat was asking a real lot; he didn't feel brave or quick witted or any of it at the moment. (Chap. 7 pgs. 118-119)
Now... just a few questions. -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry? -Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not? -What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description? -Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other? -Do you like this Sorting Hat song best? Or one from a different year? -Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song?
Just thought you'd like to talk about the Sorting Hat!

Now... just a few questions. -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry?
Good questions! I think I would be relieved if all I had to do was try on a hat. But the whole idea of being selected for something or other gives me the heebie jeebies anyway, whether it is a job interview or selection for a particular school. I think Harry's nerves go a long way deeper than the fear of doing something like trying on a hat.
-Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not?
The fact of the Sorting Hat's song and its outlining the criteria. Obviously there has to be some sort of selection process and rationale to sort out accommodation etc, so why not let everyone know what it is? On the other hand, I think that the Sorting Hat was a mite 'up itself'. Boasting about 'a smarter hat than me' indeed! Why should it boast at all?
-What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description?
As far as I know I've always considered myself a Ravenclaw type. Though Hufflepuff has its attractions....
-Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other?
At first I found the Sorting Hat alarming more than anything else. Much as Harry did. So much of the series eventuated from its comments that Harry would have done well in Slytherin.
-Do you like this Sorting Hat song best? Or one from a different year?
I'm not at all sure which song was best. The Sorting Hat Song was only shown another two times, in GOF and OotP and the latter was a warning to stick together. I think of the three songs shown this one was the sunniest.
-Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song?
It is impossible to overstate how important the role of the Sorting Hat in the series was. It isn't just a matter of saying who goes into what house, whether the Sorting Hat chooses to let the student have its choice as it did with both Harry and Hermione. It is also whether it is right to let students have their choice when it is a mere echo of parental beliefs and wishes. Or what can come out of those choices, whether they involve family conflict as in Sirius Black's case or whether they involve the break-up of a friendship as in the case of Severus and Lily. Is that sort of Sorting really worthwhile?
But then, what about the Sorting Hat's role in helping Harry then Neville Longbottom? The Sorting Hat was never an evil thing and it did its best to be fair and to bring help to worthy Gryffindors. Here is a cheer and a toast for the Sorting Hat

Excellent thread BeAchL0veEr05 !
QUOTE -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry? I would be relieved at first, but then have become nervous again. I would have gone on to think exactly what went on inside Harry's head - what if I wasn't chosen for any house ? What would happen then ? What if the whole thing was a ghastly mistake and I wasn't magical at all ?
QUOTE -Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not? I loved that song ! I especially liked the 'eat myself' part. It somehow seemed so funny, the idea of a hat eating itself ! I can't say why precisely I liked it - perhaps it was the blend of information with humour that did it.
QUOTE -What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description? To this, one I would have to truthfully say I've no idea at all ! Of course, I know where I'd like to be, but where I'd have been put ....... ?
QUOTE -Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other? I thought it was very amusing. It also gave an admirable precis of what the four houses were about and how the Hat itself functioned.
QUOTE -Do you like this Sorting Hat song best? Or one from a different year? I like all the songs. Each was worded to reflect a different situation and I like all of them
QUOTE -Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song? I must say that the Sorting Hat, even for a magical object was very remarkable. It had the ability to look inside people's heads and see which house they were most suited for depending upon their attitudes and aptitudes. It may have made a mistake here and there, but it was correct in 99% of the cases which is a very good success arte according to me, so hat's off to the Sorting Hat !

QUOTE -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry? Well; I would be relieved to know that all I had to do to get sorted was put on a hat and not have to do magic, or something rather difficult. However, since the sorting occurs in front of all of the students, I would be a bit nervous, yes.
QUOTE -Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not? I very much liked the song; and I thought it was welcome, fitting and festive. I don't have a particular song that I like; I too like all of them.
QUOTE -What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description? Great question! I'm not sure which characteristics I possess the most according to the Hat. I am more of a mixture; a Gryffinclaw; but I am also fiercly loyal to my family and friends. So, if I ever get sorted at Hogwarts, I'll let you know
QUOTE -Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other? The Hat's song was amusing and right on the mark. And it seemed almost fitting that the song was so festive; it almost marked Harry's going to Hogwarts. I noticed that with each subsequent year, the atmosphere wasn't as festive; marking Volemort's return and imminent battle.
QUOTE -Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song? According to Rowling, the Sorting Hat is never wrong; but I have to wonder, especially with characters such as Snape and Wormtail. I believe the Hat takes into consideration those traits that it "sees" as most predominant, and to an extent their potential, but unfortunately it cannot predict how the student might develop in the future. The Hat covering the students' eyes, at least for me, shows that the Hat can really see into the soul For me as a reader, the Sorting Hat was such a magical mystery, so fascinating!

Well, if anything the hat sees far into the future. Wormtail though bad turned out to have true bravery inside of him, and Snape though at the heart good, he was 'cunning as folk, using any means to make his ends' so I think the hat takes the future into consideration greatly.

The Hat, in my opinion, cannot predict how a person is going to develop into adulthood. True, a younger Snape had quilities of a Slytherin; but his bravery shined through later on as an adult. Wormtail, although he might have been brave as a child, wasn't brave IMO as an adult. So that is why I stated that the Hat cannot predict how a person is going to develop. People can change greatly; others might not.

Here are my answers! -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry? If I had wizard parents, I'd be relieved like Ron. But if I was like Harry with no wizard parents, I would be very nervous, and I would think "what if this was a mistake? what if this is a trick?" -Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not? Yes, I loved the song! My favorite part was: "Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me." -What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description? Ravenclaw, because I am very smart, or Gryffindore because I'm brave and chivalrous. -Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other? I thought it was funny (I'll eat myself if you can find a smarter hat than me) and amusing (You can keep you bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall, For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat and I can cap them all.) -Do you like this Sorting Hat song best? Or one from a different year? This one definitley. This one was the best by far! It was funny and cool, and the other ones weren't nearly as good. -Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song? The Sorting Hat is awsome and I love it! Whenever I play Harry Potter scene it, I'm always the Sorting Hat!

yay fun thread
QUOTE -If you were a first year, and you were nervous about going to Hogwarts and getting sorted, would you be relieved if all you had to do was try on the hat? Or would you still be nervous like Harry? I'd be nervous, who wouldn't? the whole damn school would be looking at you, I'd be afraid I'd do something embarrasing!
QUOTE -Did you like the Sorting Hat's song? Why (also- what was your favorite part) or why not? yes its great, don't got a favorite part though....
QUOTE -What house do you think you would be in based on the Sorting Hat's description? well I consider myself a slytherin, but according to this song, gryffindor would be my second choice
QUOTE -Did you think the Sorting Hat's song was funny? Amusing? Boring? Other? It's very amusing and funny, and a great way to introduce the houses
QUOTE -Do you like this Sorting Hat song best? Or one from a different year? This was the most amusing, but the one in OotP (I think it was then, the chapter was called something like 'the sorting hat's new song') was more interesting, suggestive as to what would come...

Do you have anything else you would like to say about the Sorting Hat or the song?
There is heaps that could be said about the Sorting Hat and its song in COS, even though Harry is not present for the festivities in Harry Potter .
* Why did the Sorting Hat think that Harry would be a good addition to the house of Slytherin?
* Why did Harry need to have a chat with the Sorting Hat in Dumbledore's office?
* What is the connection between the Sorting Hat, Fawkes and the Sword of Gryffindor?
* Who else in the series would eventually draw the Sword of Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat?
Just a few more questions for discussion.....
