Following on the heels of the unprecedented success of PS/SS, author JK Rowling was faced with a daunting task: how to "top" herself with a second book. She even suffered a bit of writer's block when faced with penning the sequel --
QUOTE(JKR in Live Interview on Scholastic.com @ 10/2000)
I've only suffered writer's block badly once, and that was during the writing of Chamber of Secrets. I had my first burst of publicity about the first book and it paralysed me. I was scared the second book wouldn't measure up, but I got through it!

She got through it all right! biggrin.gif Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published in the UK in July 1998, and in the US June 22, 1999. It was an instant repeat hit.

Book covers in the TLC Galleries

One of the most delightful new characters we meet in CoS is the vain and scheming Gilderoy Lockhart (Order of Merlin, third class) and the peacock-DADA teacher is a guilty pleasure for the book artists.

Finnish cover in the Gallery

A highly significant new character in CoS is the down-trodden house-elf, Dobby. Who would have thought at the end of this book that he would play such a HUGE role in the series?

Dobby by Mary GrandPre

The job of the cover artist is to make you want to pick up and buy the book. Which of the covers in the TLC Image Galleries fulfill that goal? Which completely turn you off? The US editions feature chapter art by the cover artist, Mary GrandPre--which ones are your favourites?

Rowling paints such vivid pictures with her words . . . do you think the artists can come close to capturing that magic on canvas? artist.gif

I've always liked the flying Ford Anglia. Do you know that there are people around who still drive them? Every time I see one in my locality I always think of Ron and Harry flying to Hogwarts, even though that particular Ford Anglia is a mustard yellow colour and not turquoise.

Gilderoy Lockhart on the Finnish cover almost looks like a woman. For a bloke he really is vainer than most women.

I have to say, the foreign covers are really, really weird unsure.gif!

The Finnish cover is just scary! The funny thing is though that most of the other countries is the same cover- except it's flipped. Like instead of Harry holding Fawkes tail on the left side of the cover, it's flipped. I thought that was interesting. I love the gallery by the way! flowers.gif

The Book Cover for CoS is pretty simple and for that reason I like it. It describes the book quite well. Considering Fawkes the pheonix was in one of the main parts of the book. Maybe something else should have been added though, to show off another part in the book.

Really? haha, what do the finnish one's look like. I'd have to say ron being chased by a snake or spider would make it hilarious.

  • I love the UK children's cover because it's the one I grew up with and it was integral to the HP experience for me.
  • I also love Mary Grand Pré's depiction of Fawkes in the US cover, I think it's absolutely breathtaking.
  • The Ukranian one(in the tradition of the Ukranian HP covers) is very unusual, particularly the faces in the wall of the tunnel but Fawkes is very nicely done as is Harry. [see here]
  • The German one has a very unique and definitive style. I love the cubist look and the tonal work of the colours, and once again, a beautiful depiction of Fawkes. [see here]

The ukranian Ron sort of look like Chucky and the German book cover is okay.
