I'm not going to admit anything to from the second i read PS (or SS depending where you live) that I thought snape was really a good guy.

But i remember ofr some reason during book 4 feeling this tiny pang of pity and sadness and then a tiny bit more in book 5. After HBP, i finished it before my tutor came over and i remember straight away saying for some reason i think snapes still a good guy and theres more to him and he said yeah i think it was a set-up with DD.

It freaked me out becuase he was right...but he also said i bet DD is still alive, which was wrong.

Anyway my question was...did anyone have that feeling in HBP and the earlier ones that snape had something more and was better than he appeared? or did you lose all hope after he did his deed in HBP?

I did NOT lose hope in Snape! I truly believed he was the good guy!
I remember at the HP7 book release party, we had a debate... Snape made the Unbreakable Vow with Cissa cuz... WHAT ELSE? Bellatrix was there. Bella, being the nasty Voldy lover she is, would have told him and Snape would be killed.
I just always had this feeling that he was just an injured soul.
I was right =D

i never saw him as a good man. i just really dont like him (sorry all you snape-lovers), but even jo said that he was a bully. he would not have felt remorse for any of his actions had lilly not died and so i dont see that as being a good man. i do feel sorry for him though, and pity.

I was always with the trio. I always suspected Snape first. Unfortunatly I seemed to take the guilty until proven innocent route. However, after reading DH I turned a little bit, he wasn't all bad. He hated James because James had what he wanted. And he turned spy because Voldy took Lily away to a place that he couldn't follow.

I think that, after the first book when we found Snape had tried to save Harry's life, that I always thought Snape was on the good side, though I don't think he can be described as good himself. To me he was clearly playing Bella and Cissy to get information out of them. Even when he killed Dumbledore there were enough signs to suggest there was more to it.

I never had a single doubt that he was working with Dumbledore. But I believed him an evil person character wise from the beginning and I still do. I don't feel sorry for him at all; I feel more sorry for Lockheart. My only hope is that in the after world Snape has to suffer for a few years before he gets over Lily, who he sees from time to time loving it up with her husband. The man caused a heck of a lot of pain for a heck of a lot of people, including all of his students. He never felt any remorse and that is not good. But he did pay for having killed all those people while a Death Eater when Voldemort killed him. Still, that won't help his character, lack of remorse or attitude unfortunately. JKR wrote a pretty despicable character in Snape and that is a cool aspect, it is just a shame she couldn't get everyone to accept the story arc she hoped for in the end.

At the end of HBP I was totally convinced that Snape was Dumbledore's man. There were too many clues that he was on that side of the fight. I even read somewhere on these threads that Snape was actually in love with Lily and that was why he turned. I thought that was very plausible.

At the beginning of DH when he gave away the right date and then maimed George, I began to doubt my belief. Jo did a masterful job of instilling that doubt. I never quite believed he was Voldemort's, but my certainty that he was Dumbledore's began to falter. I missed the clue about him "punishing" the kids by sending them to Hagrid. That was a dead giveaway of his true loyalty, but it flew right past me.

Then came the Prince's Tale and I slapped my forehead. I had been right all along, but had started to doubt. Congratulations to Jo for an unbelievably twisted plot.

I never suspected that he wasn't loyal to Dumbledore even after killing him. It was obvious to me when Dumbledore said, "Severus please," that he was begging Snape to kill him instead of to not kill him, because honestly would a man like Albus Dumbledore ever beg not to be killed?

However, just because I never doubted his loyalty doesn't mean I learned to like or respect him, although I think he is her best character in terms of depth.

I thought he was Dumbledore's man after HBP too. I couldn't accept thaat Dumbledore would make such a h uge mistake. I called the loving Lily thing too happy.gif . I took the Lupin point of view, with if you trust Dumbledore. I have too admit I doubted him in the beginning of DH after Charity Burbage was murdered, I wasnt so sure.
