Alethiometer vs Subtle Knife vs Amber Spyglass

In The Amber Spyglass we see three extraordinary objects being used. We were introduced to the Alethiometer in Northern Lights/Golden Compass. The Subtle Knife appeared in the second book of the series. And finally, we see the Amber Spyglass being made and used along with the other two in the last installment.

The Alethiometer, Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass are curious objects, each with different powers, each could probably be quite dangerous and each attractive in its own way. So –

  • Which one of the three would you want? And why? For what purpose would you use it?
  • In your opinion, which one is the most powerful? Why do you think so?
  • What do you think – which object is the most dangerous? Why?

Have fun sharing your thoughts! group.gif

First off the mark!

Which one of the three would you want? And why? For what purpose would you use it?
I think the one I would want most is the Knife, very, very closely followed by the Alethiometer. I chose the Knife first because of the power, and I've always loved the idea of being able to explore entire worlds. I'd like to think that I wouldn't be corrupted by the power, but power is such a dangerous thing...
I think the Alethiometer is more powerful, because of what it does, and the way in which it does it, but the idea of the Knife has always made me excited.
I don't know what I'd do with the Knife, because I guess it would depend on the circumstances, etc.

In your opinion, which one is the most powerful? Why do you think so?
Like I said, the Alethiometer. It has the power of knowledge; something that is extremely strong and formidable. With knowledge one can do anything.

What do you think – which object is the most dangerous? Why?
The Knife. Not only does it create Spectres (which is a major drawback), but just look at its history! It's like the Elder Wand; death and despair seem to follow it constantly.

Well, The Subtle Knife is more a bridge between the two main novels. It's the shortest and introduces the second lead, Will Parry. But I really can't choose between the first and the last. They are both amazing books.

I would want the Knife, even though I know what happens when it is used. I think to be able to travel, move around, and see new and different things would be wonderful. I don't think that I would see all the different worlds I could.

I find the Alethiometer in the hands of someone who can actually read it would be the most dangerous as well as the most powerful. Lyra used it for good, but image if she used it maliciously...the books would have been completely different. I do wonder what would have happened had she not been able to just know how to use it?

I would like to have the Alethiometer rather than the other two. I think it's more important to know the truth, the path you are supposed to take.
As for which is the most powerful, I think it's the Subtle Knife. It's essentially unlimited power. The power to go wherever you desire even across worlds, the power to cut through anything, and the power to kill. That is an enormous power, and is very, very dangerous. smile.gif

The knife would mean being able to move into different worlds which would be really interesting and fun but the price is terrible, so I think I would choose the alethiometer too. Being able to see the truth behind someone's actions and words and being certain which path to choose and how to take things forward would be a great advantage in life.

Excellent poll Mary Wanguard, and the questions have certainly given me food for thought thumbup.gif

Of the three objects I would choose to have, that would be the Subtle Knife. This incredibly powerful object can cut into different worlds and this power captivates and fascinates me!

As to which is the most powerful object; I have a hard time choosing, so for me, it is a toss up between the Alethiometer and the Subtle Knife. These two objects are very different from one another, but are in my opinion equally powerful. The Alethiometer can show you all the truths in the world; and knowledge is very powerful; however; one must know how to use it in order for the knowledge to come to fruition. The Subtle Knife too is extremely powerful, as it can cut through the fabric of the universe into parallel worlds. It also has intentions of its own; since every time a window is opened, a horrible Specter is created. The Specters almost symbolize a warning to the bearer of the Knife, in that it isn't wise to disturb the fine balance of Nature.

Finally, the most dangerous object I believe is the Subtle Knife, not only because of how we have seen it used, but because anyone can learn to use it. And the only thing that can destroy the Knife is unyielding love, beautifully shown when Will first breaks the Knife when he thinks about his mother, and in the end when he is consumed by Lyra's love.

The Alethiometer - assuming I was able to read it. If so, I would probably use it like Lyra did: to find out if I was making the right choices and what other people were truly up to. I would not want the Subtle knife, because it can only be used by the bearer it has chosen, and it marks that bearer by cutting off two of his or her fingers... Even if I wasn't a musician, and therefore totally dependent on having all ten fingers, that would be too high a price to pay.

In your opinion, which one is the most powerful? Why do you think so?
It's a close call between the Alethiometer and the Subtle knife. The idea of countless, parallel worlds is fascinating, and being able to move between them at one's request definitely would be awesome. But I agree with Mistressofthedarkarts: With knowledge one can do anything, and vote for the Alethiometer.

What do you think – which object is the most dangerous? Why?
The subtle knife. Just like Iheartprofessorsnape pointed out about the alethiometer, the bearer can use the knife for good or evil, but in addition to that, the knife will create a Specter every time it opens a window, regardless of the bearer's intentions.

By the end of the series, the alethiometer is back to being something that needs a book to be able to be used, the knife is destroyed (and good riddance, no matter how much I want to see parallel worlds) But the amber spyglass is still able to be used and is in the hands of the person who is able to use it and study what she sees. So I'd like to be able to see Dust and study how it flows now that the worlds have been changed; to peek over Dr. Malone's shoulder so to speak.

Intriguing questions!

Not meaning to be awkward but of all the objects in the series, I think I'd choose the Lodestone Resonator used by the Gallivespian spies to communicate with their leader, Lord Roke. mellow.gif

It allows you to communicate between universes, so I just wish Lyra and Will had one! cry.gif
