Everyone of us probably very vividly imagines how our beloved Harry Potter books characters should look. The Harry Potter movie-makers have had a hard task indeed - to bring the characters to screen. Threads discussing various aspects of characters'/actors' appearances have been so popular, that we decided to make it a poll and a thread where you can discuss everything about characters appearances in the movies.
Some threads you might find interesting to look at: Which Characters Look Right, And which look wrong? Green Eyes, Why didn't they make him have green eyes!? Harry's Hair, The official topic! pink! hermione/umbridge!, wrong clothing for hermione Harry's Jacket, Navy with white stripes
Please note that this thread is for discussing physical appearances of characters in the Harry Potter movies. If you want to discuss acting, you can do so in some other threads, for example: Best/Worst actor/actress, who did u think was the best at acting? Katie Leung, as Cho Chang Totally mis-cast actor(s), Was Fleur Delacoeur mis-cast? Bonny Wright - Can She Transition into the New Ginny?, Part 2 Dumbledore Portrayed in the Movies, Part 4 book Sirius vs movie Sirius, How did you picture Sirius?
Happy discussing!

QUOTE(blue4t @ Jul 12 2008, 10:21 PM) Nothing bothers me more than when the age is wrong. The only time I really feel that has happened is with Lily and James Potter. They definitely were not as old as Sirius and Remus are now. The Lily and James in PS/SS and GoF looked closer to middle age than their teens, this was pointless and unnecessary. It's not my number one annoyance but it certainly makes the list
I'll admit hair is a personal source of annoyance for me throughout the series. (1)Hermione, (2)Madame Maxime, (3)Gambon-Dumbledore, (4)Luna, (5)Dudley, (6)Petunia, (7)Sirius, (8)Umbridge (9)Harry (10)James (11)Fleur The character's I've listed all have very specifically described hair, it's not much to ask that Dudley and Petunia be blonde, Gambon's be silver and longer, Hermione's bushier, Mme. Maxime's sleek and in a bun, Fleur's long and silvery/shining, Luna's be darker, James and Harry's messier and Sirius(where stated) longer/scruffier/clean shaven.
I think the small features such as these make great contribution to how character's are perceived and are relevant to character development. Hair is one of the most commonly and easily altered human features, the necessary changes would not have been excessively expensive or difficult and IMO would have created more authentic, better defined characters, even to those who haven't read the series.
So to answer Question 5, the characters don't have to perfectly match the canon descriptions but I think it would have improved certain minor aspects of the film, certainly the acting is of greater importance but I think appearence has consistently been unnecessarily neglected.

It's so hard to just pick one of each topic:) 1) Luna, Draco and Ron are exactly how I imagined them in the books, but I picked Luna.. 2) The adults were even harder, Snape, Bellatrix, McGonnagal, Hagrid, Lucius.. they all looked like I thought they would, but I voted Snape, because he's just flawless 3) Though most of the kids had something 'wrong' I voted Fred and George as the 'worst', because I can remember my shock when I saw them, because they were so far from what I imagined, (the first film I saw was OotP) but I've gotten used to them now, and can't remember what I thought they looked like before... 4) There were so many adults I thought looked wrong somehow, but I voted Lupin, because he was so far from what I thought he'd be like, in close second comes Tonks... 5) It's important to me that they look like i thought they would, but most of the time, as long as they're similar, I'll forget how I imagined them, and won't mind as much, It's just dossapointing when I first see them... but I think it's more important that they act right! 6) All of them is important in their own way, but I think it's worst when the overall appearance is wrong,so I guess physical shape and facial features are the most important,
but also costumes, because you get more of their personality that way, and you can change/disguise physical appearance with costumes, eyes aren't too important too me, but I wish Dan had green eyes, but it'¨s not really that important,
hair is a bit more important to me, I think it's unneccesary to get that wrong (which they have so many times throughout the series) when it's a should be rather easy to get right...
age is important when they're very wrong (i.e; Moaning Myrtle, James, Lily) it's just unnecesary too cast someone who are so much older

Among the kids I'd say all of them look perfect for their roles. Daniel Radcliffe especially. Don't know why, maybe because I love Harry so much
With the adults, I was torn between Richard Harris as DD and Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. They're both prefect. As for the others... Mr and Mrs Weasley, Sirius, Lupin, McGonagall all looked slightly wrong the first time I saw them, but I'm used to them now.
QUOTE 5) It's important to me that they look like i thought they would, but most of the time, as long as they're similar, I'll forget how I imagined them, and won't mind as much, It's just dossapointing when I first see them... but I think it's more important that they act right! I agree. It's nice when a film is superbly cast, like LOTR, for example, but even if an actor looks rather wrong but acts great, then I completely embrace them, like Joanne Whalley-Kilmer in the "Scarlett" tv-series, who had very dark brown eyes instead of Scarlett's bright green, but her acting was really great.
Petunia's and Dudley's hair I didn't even notice, on the contrary, they seemed to me better cast than Remus and Sirius... So I'd guess hair and eyes don't play much of a role for me, unless, of course, we're talking about the main characters. Harry would look really strange with blond hair. Costumes are important. Like the present DD's robes bug me to no end. And I'd wish Hermione wouldn't wear so many clothes with horizontal stripes...
QUOTE Remus's mustache also bugs me. It's the same kind of mustache Fudge has. It works on Fudge, not on Remus. He shouldn't have a mustache. Fudge doesn't have a moustache, does he?
ETA: oh yeah, the one character who looked completely different to what's described in the book is Krum.

The fact that they left Dan's eyes blue bothered me, and I always pictured him as tall. Besides that though, he fits the part.
I voted for Sirius as the adult who looked the least like I thought he should. I didn't like the moustache. Didn't it say somewhere that he was clean-shaven?
I also thought that Remus and Snape should've been thinner. I always pictured them as really skinny, like I always pictured Dudley bigger.
Natalie Tena didn't bother me at all. I thought she looked good for the part, though I don't really like the pictures of her from HBP.
I think Michael Gambon looks like the Dumbledore I pictured, though I agree he should change his robes once in a while.
I liked Maggie Smith as McGonagall. I think she's perfect for the part.
