So I am re-reading book 5, and near the end Harry and Hermione take Umbridge into the forest. Through some good fortune and thought, they lose her - then Ron, Ginny, Neville, and Luna show up. At that point they wonder how they are going to get to London. Why not use Umbridge's fireplace - floo network? She is out of the picture, and it would be quickest. Seems odd they didn't think of it since the thrust of the evening up to that point was to get a chance to use it to check on Sirius.

i guess to go back into school would be dangerous, as (i think i am right here), it was late and so they would have been questioned for being out of bed so late. also i think that other things would have been racing around there minds, and they just went with the first thing they could think of.

with other members of the inquisitorial squad lurking around and filch....plus, they were walking for quite a while to get to that spot in the forest, werent they? seems that thestrals showing up was the best bet...going back up to the school and trying to maneuver their way back into umbridge's office wouldve been a waste of time as well as dangerous (in that they may have been caught and not been able to go to sirius's aid)

this reason above all others was the best one for not returning to the castle. Why risk being caught again or even having to battle the squad when they could leave directly from the forest?

There is also the practical consideration that they are a long way out into the forest, and it might take them a while to get back to the castle (assuming they don't get lost), Of course it might still be quicker to go back to the castle and use the Floo network, but an immediate solution would seem more attractive. Of course the other question is why Harry just didn't travel to Grimmauld Place directly rather than talk to Kreacher, since 12 GP would be considerably closer to the Ministry than Hogwarts, though maybe he was interrupted before he had time to do so.

thats an interesting idea. do you think that umbridge mightve been able to follow him to grimmauld place if he had done that?? i know she said that her fireplace is the only one at hogwarts not being monitored by marietta's mother at the ministry, but that doesnt necessarily mean that umbridge herself didnt have something in place to monitor.

although, now that i think about it...if she did, she wouldnt have had to torture harry to see who he was speaking to. she couldve just looked for herself!

I think the reason he didn't go there is that he would then have had the problem of getting back.

Yeah, I agree. It would be kind of hard for him to get back into the office from that. And also, Harry always has his intent on being a lone-hero. I don't think he would be thinking straight enough to put this into consideration, and he also didn't want to take the others with him remember.

ive always thought this, and it frustrated me that he didnt go into sirius's house. i wanted him to like go through the floo network, and run around there looking for sirius, apparently grimmauld place is closer to the ministry, so if it turns out sirius was not there, they could get to the ministry more quickly. but i guess j.k. rowling wanted sirius to die, so harry could not have done something that would make him realize sirius was not in danger sad.gif
