I thought Remus Lupin and Dumbledore were the most impressive characters in PoA. Remus because he was a fantastic DADA teacher, and taught Harry arguably more than any of his other DADA teachers (I only say arguably more because the false Moody taught quite a bit too, although we don't see much of a variety with him, mainly just focusing on the Unforgivable Curses). Dumbledore because we see just how much of an open mind he has. He's willing to accept Remus Lupin as a teacher and give him a job where many other people wouldn't. He also allowed Remus Lupin into the school as a student. He's the only person willing to believe Harry, Ron, and Hermione about Sirius Black's innocence.
As for most annoying, Aunt Marge. There were other annoying characters, and I felt tempted to put Professor Trelawney down at first, but at least her antics were amusing while annoying. Aunt Marge didn't even really amuse me, JKR wrote that character well when it came to wanting to see her blown up by Harry. I was practically cheering when that happened.

I voted for Remus Lupin and Sirius Black for the most impressive characters. I agree with Sabrinita (hope I am spelling that right--will come back and edit if not) that Remus is impressive because of his acumen as a professor of DADA. He saves Harry and his friends from the dementor on the Hogwarts Express, which shows us a bit of his talent(completly different from *cough* Lockhart* cough*) and then of course he teaches Harry how to conjure a patronus. He also mentors Harry, giving him emotional support and telling him about his dad. On top of that, he is able to manage to continue to teach in spite of the fact that he is a werewolf.(With some help from Snape and his potion).I have to wonder how much more effective he would have been as a wizard had he not become a werewolf. *sigh* Curse that Fenrir Greyback! Stuff and Umbridge! I also voted for Sirius Black. We find that he not only did not betray Lily and James Potter, nor kill Peter Pettigrew, for which supposed crime he was sentenced without a trial to Azkaban, but he also is not trying to kill Harry, but to protect him. That he is able to escape Azkaban, evade the dementors, get Crookshanks to help him, and incidentally buy Harry a firebolt broom, while on the run from the law(both muggle and wizard) shows his loyalty and his talent as a wizard are both impressive. The way that he bellows at Peter in the Shrieking Shack, telling Peter that it would have been better to die than to betray his friends, shows that indeed Sirius would have died rather than betray James and Lily; furthermore, I believe that Sirius would have also placed his life on the line for Remus and even Peter.
As for the most annoying characters, I voted for Aunt Marge(practically a no-brainer there) and Snape. I would have probably voted for Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew, but how can a character be annoying if you don't know of his perfidy until the climax of the book? There is nothing in the character of Scabbers that we see that tells us about his true character(except for the sneak-o-scope-- a major clue there) so that like Harry and Ron, we are clueless until the showdown in the SS. Aunt Marge--now, there's an extremely annoying character. She almost makes her brother Vernon look humane, and that takes extreme behavior to do that. She verbally abuses Harry, indicating that all he needs is some good beatings to knock some sense into him, and then she does the worst thing possible to an orphan--she denigrates his parents. I thoroughly enjoyed her being "blown up"--both in the book and film versions.Poetic justice, IMHO. Snape--well, he is perenially an annoying character because of how he treats Harry, but His scathing remarks about Lupin's inability to meet with his class, his uncalled-for verbal abuse of Hermione("insufferable know-it-all"--and talk about the pot calling the kettle black!)and his meddling in the confrontation in the Shrieking Shack, especially his avowed eagerness to turn Sirius over to the Dementors, and his crazy behavior after Sirius escapes, make him annoying character number two in this book, as far as I am concerned.

Lovely post Fricka ! I find that you've said everything I wanted to about Remus and Sirius in a much better way than I would have so I'll skip them both.
The other person who impressed me most was Harry. He's simply amazing in all the books, but especially so in POA. He had horrible things going on in his head whenever the Dementors came near him, but he didn't let that get him down for too long. Even though learning to fight them was extremely difficult, he stuck to it with an incredible amount of courage and succeeded in the end. He was able to get over his natural desire to curse his parent's betrayer into oblivion and saved Pettigrew and stopped his fathers friends from killing that scum.
Most annoying would have been Marge for me too. In fact, I don't think annoying covers it. Infuriating ? Aggravating ? Something even stronger, I think. She makes Petunia and Vernon loving by comparisonb. How dare she start on James and Lily in front of Harry ? IMO blowing her up wasn't enough. Something stronger was called for.

I thought that Harry, Ron, Hermione, Lupin, Sirius, and Sybill were the most impressive. ESPECIALLY- Harry- he was nice enough to save Wormtail's life, and he fought off about 100 dementors at once! Hermione- her time-turner saved everyone! Sybill- made the prophecy that came true
Annoying charcters- Uncle Vernon, Dudley, Aunt Marge, Percy, and Snape

I'd say Harry and Remus Lupin were most impressive. I must admit that I wasn't as big a fan as I am now after reading PS and CoS. To me, that were really children's books. Nothing wrong with that of course, because they were well written, funny, and adventerous. But for me the reason that Harry was involved in all these adventures was that he was the protagonist of the series. He wants to do good, but he's very naive and underestimating the dangers too. However, in book 3 he chooses to fight the dementors, something he knows he's really scared of, and I really admire him for that. And of course, some of the credits have to go to Lupin who, like Harry, has traces of serious evil in him, but chooses not to act on them. I think the most admireable thing about Lupin is that he takes his students seriously, letting them fight their fears.
The most unimpressive (although not the most annoying, that would be aunt Marge) to me is Snape. I have to admit I'm a big fan of Snape, but in this book he's just this man that can't overcome his childhood grudges.
