It was a long holiday weekend here in the US and I've seen several stories in my local paper about the number of crash fatalities over the weekend. From what the news reports indicate, most of the folks killed were not wearing seat belts. sad.gif The other contributors to accidents that were mentioned were cell phone use by the driver, excessive speed, and alcohol. dry.gif

So, what kind of driver are you? Do you always wear a seat belt? Do you think seat belt use should be mandatory? Do you speed? Do you use your cell phone while driving? ponder.gif

In Australia it is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle to wear seat belts. It is illegal to drive while using a mobile phone. You can even be fined for using a mobile phone if you are pulled over to the side of the road and your engine is still running. It doesn't stop everyone though. You still get the drivers who think that the law doesn't apply to them.

Do you always wear a seat belt?
A definate yes. It's a automatic reaction for me - close the car door and immediately put my seat belt on. I've always done it
Do you think seat belt use should be mandatory?
Another definate yes. The seat belt are there for a reason, to keep us safe. Anyone who travels with me has to have their seat belt on before setting off.
Do you speed?
This is were is gets more difficult, seeming I don't drive. But a lot of people have been killed in car accidents over the years, including a local school teacher. sad.gif
Do you use your cell phone while driving?
Again, I don't drive but you definately should even have your cell phone on while driving - if you really really have to, make it hands free.

Do I wear a seatbelt?

Always. Even if I am not the driver. If I am driving, everyone HAS to have their seatbelts on before the car is even started. Until then, the car does not move.

Should seatbelts be mandatory?

That is a resounding YES.

Do you speed?

My daughter, and husband, have often referred to my driving, as "Being in the car with grandmother." Though, from what I've seen from some grandmothers, and grandfathers...they drive like bats out of h---! I try not to speed...even if I am in a hurry or late for something. I'd rather be late, then in a hurry to get nowhere fast.

Do you use your cellphone while driving?

Absolutely not. It's a dangerous distraction...if you must chat to someone, pull over or wait until you are parked somewhere. Better yet, leave it for when you get home. No call is that important.

If I speed, it is because everyone else is. I usually go around the same speed as the majority of the cars around me, with the exception of people overtaking and crazy drivers etc.

To be honest, I do not put my seat belt on when I'm in the backseat. sad.gif

I would never text when I'm driving, but if I have a cellphone with a headset, I might if it was a call I was expecting.

One thing that bugs me is people who say they are an excellent driver just because they follow all the rules. I know someone who follows all the rules, but I get heavily car sick with her at the wheel. When I drive, I don't just focus on abiding by the rules. I also try to make the ride as smooth as possible.

I nearly had a guy ram straight into me yesterday because he was talking on his mobile while driving and didn't check before he attempted to change lanes. Bloody idiot.

I always wear my seatbelt, don't touch my mobile phone while driving and try not to speed.

I also never drink and drive. Even though, in Australia, we only have to have a blood alcohol level under 0.05%, I find it safer to make myself a rule that if I have anything alcoholic at all to drink, I don't get behind the wheel. Irresponsible driving puts not just yourself at risk, but everyone else on the road. I've also taken keys off friends of mine before when they've decided to try driving home after having far too many drinks. I'd rather they be alive and angry at me for doing that than let them get behind the wheel and potentially injure / kill themselves or others. A very good friend of my sisters was hit and killed by a drunk driver who lost control of his car a couple of weeks after finishing year 12 when he was walking down the street. I can't stop everyone getting behind the wheel drunk, but I'll certainly stop those I can.

Well I don't drive yet but...

  • I always wear my seatbelt.
  • Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory in Ireland.
  • Most people I know will put their phone on speaker if it rings while they're driving, which I do not have an issue with as there is little different between that and talking to a passenger or listening to the radio.
  • I think most people speed at some point as the limit is not always clearly sign posted and therfore not known but the laws on speeding in Ireland have been getting stricter every year so the problem is hopefully decreasing.

I drive for a living and we have cell phone/radios. I use the phone for 3 things:

1. To let my parents know where I am and what my schedule is.
2.To Call the Client/Passenger to let them know I am :
a.on the way to pick them up at home or
b.call them when their flight lands at Atlanta Airport.

3.And to check Traffic Conditions.

The two way radio part is used between the base and the driver. Mainly I only do it(use the phone/Radio) when I am stopped in a driveway or when I am parked at the airport. I got stopped on the Air Force Base this summer just because I had received a phone call with my customer trying to talk me to his location.

Yes I Always wear seat belts when I drive. Some people do not and heaven forbid if I am in a accident, that is the first thing that the police ask the people that are riding with me. I always tell the people that it is a state law here in Georgia USA and there are signs up and down the highway telling people to buckle up.

I remember once when I worked Security for a hotel here in Warner Robins, GA that part of my job was to pick up people at the little Macon airport. When I got to the airport to pick the airline crews up I always asked them nicely to buckle up. One or more of the crew would ask me if I was a "crazy driver", and I would reply no, but that it was a state law. I got in trouble for asking this (even though I was correct) and told not to ask anymore. Now in my new job I do ask occasionally when I know that people don't buckle up but most of my customers do.

I don't actually drive alot, i could more i just choose not to. But when i do i think im a pretty safe driver. I do admit to haven forgotten to buckle up on occation, i don't own a cell phone so that'd pretty hard to text or talk on the phone without and i don't drink, ever.

2. yes, its there for our safety, so it should be mandatory.
3. well since i dont drive i have no problem with texting! lol. but if you are driving i think its just stupid to do so while texting.
4. again, i dont speed but the people i usually drive with dont speed, only if there is an emergency or something.
