From when I first started reading the Harry Potter books, until a couple of months ago, if you had asked me if I would trade in my laptop and cell phone for a magic wand to go to Hogwarts, I would have immediately went
 , and proceeded to pack my trunk.However, recently, I began to think once again about what a big impact leaving EVERYTHING in my life behind would have. And what is more, I determined that if given the option to become a witch tomorrow in the world of Harry Potter, I would politely decline. So now I extend the question. Would you become a wizard? Some food for thought before you decide too rashly: 1. No electronics work in magical environments. This means no more Computer iPod CD player Cell phone Myspace Leaky Lounge other really awesome electronics which you are emotionally and mentally attached to 2. You wouldn't be allowed to tell ANYONE about your new secret. This includes family friends Harry Potter skeptics Leaky Loungers 3. You would have to leave your school, work, and/or residence behind, and thus leave all your muggle friends too 4. You would have to learn magic from scratch, regardless of your age. (Unless you are 10 or 11). This means attending Hogwarts may not be an option all those years at muggle college were for nothing etc... 5. The wizarding world is a very scary place. Just think of all the terrible things that can happen to you -- especially at Hogwarts -- regarding injury, torture, terror, and bad luck. I hope this topic doesn't already exist -- I searched a little, but I couldn't find anything. Happy posting

Yes, in a heart beat. I would love to be a part of that world.
Just to note, you wouldn't have to leave everything behind, for instance, you could still see your muggle friends, they just couldn't know. Also, you could still use a muggle computer, in an internet cafe for example. -------------------- Ravenclaw Forever!!!

But even if you could still see your muggle friends, it would be so difficult to avoid awkward questions such as: "So where do you go to school again? Can I visit you there?" or "What do you do as a job?" or "Where do you disappear off to all the time"
You would be living a double life -- a lie. Would it really be worth it? To just disappear (no pun intended)? I think not. Name Unknown, you raise an interesting point about computers. Yes, you could use it in the presence of muggles, as long as you are far from the MoM or Hogwarts. But what about at work, or at school. True, it would be very hard to live a double life. Personally though, I think it would be worth it.
The lack of technology would be very hard, but it is possible that the wizarding world has had some advances in recent years. They already had radio, so why couldn't they develop other alternate technology. Also, that would make a very interesting point of study, to try and figure out the whole magic/electricity thing. -------------------- Ravenclaw Forever!!!

As much as I love the Potterverse, I would find leaving my Muggle life very difficult, leaving my "Muggle family" behind. Maybe wizards have advanced with technology - with internet etc - but as others have said, it would lead to awkward questions from the neighbours. I'll keep the Potterverse in my head I think

Hmm, it would be hard to leave my muggle family behind, but I think that it would be possible to make others happy. They wouldn't know, so you could subtly help people. Personally, I think that I would really enjoy having magic, and you can always meet new people.

i would literally drop everything i'm holding right now and pack my trunk to Hogwarts (i'm 14) if offered the chance. i'd be hard living without electronics, and having to keep such a huge secret, but imagine...

Mmm, and there are so many things to discover in the HP world. I'm by no means a genius, nor have a traveled the world or whatever, but I feel like there is so much to learn about their world.
