There's one for movies and I believe there's one for albums too. The book list is rather suspect. Honestly, there's almost nothing prior to 1700 and what there is is utterly absurd. The list seems to be rather chummy, promoting certain author's minor titles and highlighting names of authors who are already fading stars. It looks more like a marketing tool for Amazon. It really has no literary merit to it. There is something perverse about a list seems so heavily weighted to the last 25 years and sprinkles such obscure titles among the well-known. -------------------- Come the words that bubble Up through broken laughter, Sweeter than spring-water, "Gods, I am so happy!"

First I want to say I found it amusing that at the time of this post Malcolm1980 has 1001 posts. Wow, I have a lot of reading to do! I counted only 41 books I have read in full and 5 others I have read in part. I have no significant qualms with the list, though as I have said perhaps I'm not the best judge. I would like to know more about his criteria for including a work on this list. I enjoyed most of the books I have read on this list and think their inclusion is justified.

I've read: The Virgin Suicides: Excellent Book; makes you uncomfortable in places The Things They've Carried: Haunting Beloved :Not as good as I thought it would be The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Hilarious and sometimes perceptive. Interview with the Vampire :Captivating. The Bluest Eye: Beautiful, touching and real. Slaughterhouse Five: Incredible. I read it immediately after I bought as I sat under a tree in the park, which contrasted well with the story. To Kill a Mockingbird: One of my favorite books of all time. Things Fall Apart: Read it for a class and loved it. Every U.S. president should read it whenever they get the notion of forcing American values on other countries. The Once and Future King: I love Arthurian legend. Awesome. LOTR: Wonderful Animal Farm: I love allegories. Of Mice and Men: Makes me cry, but I love it anyway. I remember the vasoline filled glove thing made me blush (I was 15). The Hobbit: Wonderful. Brave New World: Thought provoking. The Sun Also Rises: Hate it. The Great Gatsby: Love it. Just Through the Brick Wall Posts: 5 Joined: 10:13pm August 8, 2006 Location: Here in my head	I can't understand why Dante's The Devine Comedies or Plato's The Symposium or The Republic, wouldn't be on the List for pre 1700's. Neither is Beowulf (I didn't like it. But a lot of people do). Or do people consider these works to be Poems/Plays/Dialogues? (same with Shakespeare). As for me I don't think a book is worth reading unless it's at least 50 years old. (With some obvious exceptions). So I haven't read anything from the 2000's and very few from the 1900's(There is hardly any Agatha Christie. And NO Truman Capote). I was very disappointed to not see Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 on the list. But I agree with the 1800's section for the most part. Bravo for the Bronte sisters. Flesh-Eating-Slug Catcher Posts: 152 Joined: 4:08pm January 28, 2005 Location: Sitting on an axminster carpet wanting it to fly.	Most of the listed books seem to be film centric. I think there have been film adaptations[1],TV shows, or documentaries based on the themes of these books. The ones I have read, are well worth reading. It seems strange that my favorite 20th century author Nevil Shute gets only one mention, and that for a minor work (Made into a PBS mini series) Of his work, the best know is On the Beach. (The film is dated and the remake awful.) On the Beach. is a minor work of his, but one that should be read by everyone. Shute's best work Trustee from the toolroom gets hardly a mention (No Film) But may in the long term become one of the most defining books of the 20th century. Round the bend, is set in Late 1940s early 50s Kuwait and sets the stage for the middle east conflict happening now. In the wet, the best dream ever. There are 26 Nevil Shute books so one would not necessarily expect them all, but if Shute fans vote for Trustee as the best then should not that be the one listed? I still find it a coincidence that Nevil Shute, was considered a backwards stutterer who overcame the handicap, Not unlike another Nevil who answerers to the name Longbottom. (which would be my question to Jo, if one inspired the other.) The 19th century stuff has better grounding. My favorite late century authors, Dickens and Collins are well represented, and yes everyone should Read The Woman in white and that is Read with a capitol 'R' and not watch any of the 3 or 4 film/miniseries adaptations, as there is a surprise for the reader that can not be done on film. The only other author who has done the same is Jo, who changed the meaning of the first paragraph of book one, by actions in book 3.) It is hard to make such lists, for example in the 19th century I have many favorites, Conan Doyle and Lewis Carol are late century; writing after Dickens who was dead by the time of their popularity. In the same spirit Dickens was writing after Jane Austin was dead. So that we in the 21st century get time travelers, who use Lewis Carol's mathematics to build a H.G Wells Time machine. I would have included more old literature (including Homer, Herodotus, Vergil, Horace - it seems like they only included novels in the list - novels didn't exist before the hellenistic period, and didn't become popular until centuries later) and more non-English literature (by which I mean written in another language than English ). But I guess anglosaxons focus on what they know, and that's only natural. I've seen worse lists than this one. I agree with Arethusa that many of these books are filmable or have indeed been adapted to film. I'm pleased to see at least a few (though never enough ) Dutch novels on the list: All Souls Day by Cees Nooteboom (Allerzielen) Rituals by Cess Nooteboom (Rituelen) The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch (De ontdekking van de hemel) The Sorrow of Belgium by Hugo Claus (Het verdriet van België - Claus is a Flemish writer, so he writes in Dutch) Max Havelaar by Multatuli - this is the best book I've ever read originally written in Dutch, you should all read it. I can recommend the other Dutch books too, they're all very good. I haven't counted what I have read - will do, and then edit this post. Although there are many objections to lists like these and I don't think the listmakers are right, I enjoy lists immensely - I am a list person myself. I don't think I have read many of these books since I am not a native speaker of English (although I often read English books), and a Dutch literature major, so most books I have read are not on this list. Oh, and I missed Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White - I loved that, pity they left it out. And they should have included all books by Vladimir Nabokov, not just a few. The Garden Where the Brass Band Played – Simon Vestdijk. I think this must be the translation of De koperen tuin, which I haven't read yet, but I can definitely recommend him as an author.
