Today, I was at a bookstore. Attached to the price tag for Beedle was a comment tag: "Juvenile fiction, age appropriate for 6-12 year olds."

I'll agree for some. There's at least one that is certainly upper teen by my thought.

I'd like your thoughts smile.gif

I'd say that if the library/bookstore thinks that's the age they should recommend the books for then that's ok. However, I am of the opinion that restraining books to certain ages is a no go. Kids and parents should know what they can or cannot read, and I would dislike to have someone telling me what I am or am not ready to read. That's the reason why I think a lengthier description of the book would be more useful than a recommended age tag for them.

I'll admit that The Warlock's Hairy Heart surprised me, as it was intended to be a tale for children. Then I remembered that in the original version of Cinderella the step-sisters cut their toes.

I would say between 8 and 12 age group but they're suitable for any Potter fan - they are ageless in my opinion smile.gif

It all comes down to parents. If a child is not ready to read all or part of the book, it is the job of the parent (or another adult) to regulate that.

Well yes and no. It all depends on their reading age. It doesn't matter if the person reading it is six or sixty if their reading ability stops their ability to understand what has been written. Parents can be of the greatest help, especially if there is a reading disability involved. Otherwise a tragedy is waiting to happen.

They are, in my opinion, to be read by/to anyone who would normally read/listen to traditional Fairy Tales. If a child is old enough to hear Hansel & Gretel the they are old enough to hear all of these tales.

I was struck first that the bookstore would even put an upper limit on, considering how many adults enjoy literary critique for fun and frolic ;)

Most of the tales are age appropriate for a six year old. Yeah, that feels about right.

The Hairy Heart? Aside from the horror of it ... and no matter how you slice it, murder is not something I think a nine year old should be exposed to (I don't care about your claim that the TV does it... that's wrong too), I think it's deep enough that it should be held back until the young person is 15-17. Even Rowling, wearing her Beedle author hat, says it in the tale in discussing perversion.

My thoughts only.

But look at Harry Potter. The whole saga begins with the two murders of James and Lily.

Ahhh... but PS/SS does not target itself to a 6 year old. We've heard countless times the target is a 10 year old boy.
