Me and my wife listen to the Audio books of all five books nonstop and we have never really physical read the books.  We listen to them in order and then just start over when we end Ootp.  My aunt and cousins all read the books and when we get together our theories about what will happen are totally different  Has anyone else noticed this?  Jim Dale seems to give emotion to the characters that might not be recognizable when reading.  What do you think?

I haven't personally talked to anyone that's only listened to the audiobooks, but I suppose it would be understandable. Only reading them gives you a lot more individuality with characters, particularly with dialogue. It's a lot harder to pick up inflections in text.

I have to say that I do the same thing, listen to the book in the car, while I'm cleaning over and over again and my mom who is a principal does the same thing.  My kids love for me to read them though, probably because I've listened to them so much I'm giving the same voices as Jim Dale.  He is so incredible and I can't thank them enough (he and JK) because listening to these books has actually made housework fun. My husband is in shock at how clean it is on the day I listen to the tapes.  What I wouldn't give for a wand though.

i think you losse something when you only listen.  you loose your own ability to pause and take into account something you just read.  you loose the ability to flip back to a chapter where you thought you read something important, but didn't realize it at the time. :read:

however, i have heard a bit, a very small bit, of GoF on tape from my friends little cousin.  when you listen to the books, you gain another person's view of the books by listening to the inflection of their voice.  the things that you may not perceive as important, when read with a certain tone of voice, now seem more important, and you can pick up on more this way. :ponder:

heck with it, i say do both!

I do both.  I read the books to myself and I listen to HP on CD in the car.  Sometimes I'll even be reading one book and listening to another one!

I think it's just like being in a chat room or on a message board. Everyone puts their own twist or emotion on the words spoken. One person may put a sarcastic twist on a sentence while another puts another emotion to it. With the audio books you have the emotion Jim gives to it. Some sentences I would think would be said by a character should be funny or silly he can make a bit more serious. It's how people interpret things. I have only read each book once but have listened to the audio books many times (I love them!) Even if you read the books you may still disagree on things.

On a side note, the audio books that Jim Dale reads ARE read word for word from the book.

edited for spelling (and I think I still got it wrong!)

Does Jim Dale get any insight from JKR as to how to read the books? Because if the way he stresses things is based on how JKR views the books, then the audiobooks should probably be heard by everyone that could because it gives insight into how SHE wants it to be read.

However, I do enjoy reading it more. It's more personal that way, and I like the way things sound in my mind better than what they sound like in audiobook.

I do both.  I usually read the book when it comes out a few times, then order the audiobooks and listen to them.  I also have both Stephen Fry (apart from GoF missing, and OotP in the mail, but I have them on mp3 too) and Jim Dale audiobooks, so it's actually quite fun.  You can compare the way they interpret things, their tone of voice, etc.

However, I do think you have a pretty good idea of those inflections when reading the book too.  Maybe not always the tone of voice and all that (I was actually shocked at hearing Umbridge's voice :eep: ), but the emotion into it is easy to figure out, as Jo writes things pretty plainly.

And Dale will sometimes add a little something in between sentences to link them, but mostly, he reads word for word.

All I have heard about Jim and input from jo is that she has approved all the voices he does for the characters.  It was in that Barnes and Noble interveiw posted a couple days ago.  There was only one voice that she asked him to change.  I am sure she has some input, maybe about critical scenes or events.  I wonder what she thought of Jim's version of Umbridges little cough.  That makes my spine twist whenever I hear it!
