QUOTE … Harry had no idea where Dumbledore went during the summer holidays. He amused himself for a moment, picturing Dumbledore, with his long silver beard, full-length wizard’s robes, and pointed hat, stretched out on a beach somewhere, rubbing suntan lotion onto his long crooked nose. (p.21. GoF, 1st Scholastic Trade pb.) Have you ever wondered where your favourite witch or wizard goes on holiday? Our August contest offers a chance to share your imaginings. You’re invited to submit a postcard written by any HP book character while on vacation. Decorate the image side of the card with a photo or original artwork related to the vacation spot. On the other side, write a brief message from your chosen character describing his or her holiday experiences. You may collaborate on a postcard with one other artist or writer if you wish. Postcards will be judged by their overall effect, which will include how well the card suits the character chosen. Is the location a holiday destination that the character would choose? Is the message in keeping with the character’s personality? The judges will also be looking for creativity. Is the message lively; humorous; intriguing – something more than “Wish you were here”? Is the image side something out of the ordinary? We’re hoping to see a wide variety of the things commonly found on postcards: Scenery, wildlife, maps, jokes, comics, historical information, recipes, famous persons, local trivia… anything associated with the holiday spot. Can you team up with someone that is 11 years old for the post card contest?
Does it have to be just a holiday or could it be a work/holiday? This post has been edited by is.this.real?: Aug 3 2009, 11:59 PM -------------------- is.this.real? |

Sorry, but each team member must be at least 13 years old. If by work/holiday you mean someone who is combining work with pleasure, that will be fine. -------------------- ![]() Devoted thanks to Dreamteam for the pics! We keep forgetting to mention this and add it into the rules, but we give out MyLeaky points for 1st-3rd and all HMs now. It's been changed in our FAQ and it's been going on for the last 3 contests or so.
Here is how the points break down: First - 200 points Second - 150 points Third - 100 points HMs - 50 points So, as a reminder of prizes, first place winners receive a custom made Wizard Wood Wand, 200 MyLeaky points, and the nifty "Contest Winner" button. Second place to HMs all receive MyLeaky Points and the nifty "Contest Winner" button. All winning entries are also posted here, on our webpage, and announced on Leaky. -------------------- |

Does the holiday we're writing about have to be one that the character has taken within the series? (Like Hermione's ski trip with her parents, for example.)

The holiday does not have to be one specifically mentioned in the books. Feel free to get creative with you choice of character and destination but remember they should match.
QUOTE Is the location a holiday destination that the character would choose? Is the message in keeping with the character’s personality? Hagrid wouldn't take a trip to shop Rodeo Drive any more than McGonagall would spend spring break at Virginia Beach. -------------------- Lion's Friend

Rules for the written side:
2. The holiday must take place sometime during the HP series. 3. Please keep the date, location, and content compatible with the books. My question is about Rules 2 & 3. If the holiday must take place during the series, does that mean we can't use for example, Hagrid traveled to Hawaii? And Rule number 3, the date, location and content has to be mentioned in the book somewhere? So, We can't make up our own? for example I couldn't use "Nov. 12, 1997 Luna Lovegood in Rome.." sorry for my confusion, i just want to be 100% on the rules. =) thanks! |

The trip should take place any time during the timeline of books 1 through 7. Also, if your character dies during the series the trip must be sometime before their demise. The trip does not have to be mentioned specifically in the books. “Rule 3” relates to how well the character and trip are suited for each other. You can make up a trip for a character but be sure it is one that fits that character’s personality and ability (Ron wouldn’t go to Vegas with Remus since neither can afford to gamble). You should not make up a character, however. -------------------- Lion's Friend

how do we make it clear to the judges as to when in the series the holiday was taken? does that make sense?

If you believe there is potential for the judges to be confused over the timing of the post card, the best way to be clear would be to mention a fact or some detail in the message that links to the time period. You should be able to pick up the context from the message itself. Possibly a specific mention of a character or event, “Can’t wait for DADA. Hope we get another like Lupin this year. He was the best.” (I know! That’s a lot of words!) Or maybe a one-line mention of a previous event, an inside joke about something that happened to one of the characters, why they're there (work?), etc. That’s not the only way though. You could simply put a postmark on it, or a closing line saying when next they'll see them, or a mention of when they are returning to the country.
