Favorite adult actors: Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, and David Thewlis. Favorite young actors: Rupert Grint, Dan Radcliffe, and Tom Felton. Favorite adult actress: Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, and Helen McCroy Favorite young actress: Emma Watson and Evanna Lynch. I agree with most...but I would add Jim Broadbent and Robbie Coltrane in the adult actors section. -------------------- ![]() Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy. David Thewlis as Lupin just broke my heart. His acting in PoA made me love the book character even more. Absolutely perfect. The way he clutches Harry in OotP after Sirius is killed makes my heart hurt. In his face I see grief and regret at losing a best friend so soon after gaining him back after so long apart. Matthew Lewis is OotP is perfect, and he steals that Room of Requirement scene with Dan Radcliffe. And it is evident in every scene that Evanna Lynch is a true blue HP fan, as she *is* Luna Lovegood.
Had to add that Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort is divine. His voice and movement bring the villian to life. He growls, he hisses, he whispers and he makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. And I can't even describe how the way he moves completes the picture, but he brings Voldemort alive and owns that character. That head movement in King's Cross station alone...Eek! I think Emma Watsn is a terrible actress, yeah, she looks like Hermione, but she doesn't act like her in the movies.

Her performance in HBP was on a whole new level to the other films, maybe she took an acting class or two? mioaw! Seriously really liked her in HBP particularly now all the eyebrow raising has gone, I was impressed. All the adult actors are outstanding but they just dont use them enough(Alan Rickman!!!!). The guy that plays Filch is wicked and never seems to get a mention! Out of the trio I have always found Dan Radcliffe the most painful to watch particularly in OOTP. |

She improves every film. But yeah, it is your opinion. -------------------- "There are all kinds of courage. I think Emma Watsn is a terrible actress, yeah, she looks like Hermione, but she doesn't act like her in the movies. I agree, her acting throughout the movies is very stale and her reactions are very forced. Its sad how 2 of the main characters are bad actors (emma watson and dan radcliffe). Radcliffe wasnt bad in a few of the films but it was unbarable to watch him in GOF and OOTP. |

I think Emma Watson is a wonderful actress. She is one of the young actors that has improved most. I love the subtle way she can convey all emotions, from irritation to sadness to joy. Of the 'arrived' actors, I really like Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman. Even though they don't have a lot of acting time in the later films, it is always a joy to watch their scenes.
Edited to say: how can I forget Gary Oldman! Esp in OotP he is so great, esp in the scene with Harry next to the Black family tree. This post has been edited by Renata82: Nov 8 2009, 08:12 AM |

I think that when it come to The Trio, their acting abilities tend to teeter a lot from scene to scene. They all do well with their parts, then again I almost want to say they try just a little too hard at times. Such as Emma Watson's constant moving of the eyebrows to express emotion and Rupert Grint's laid back approach of Ron tends to go overboard. The side characters though I think do an absolutely brilliant job. The majority of them play their parts so well, I'd really like to high five the casting director.

At this point Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint can't be blamed for their performances. A good director should be able to get a decent performance out of anyone so long as they know their lines. Great actors are able to overcome bad directors, good actors sometimes aren't.
You can see this clearly in HBP, when Harry spends Christmas at the Burrow. Harry, Lupin, Tonks, and Arthur sit in the living room discussing Voldemort. Arthur is clutching a pillow: Image 1 Erm... why? He has it with him through the whole scene: Image 2 Williams' performance is severely hampered by the fact that he is clutching a pillow to his chest the whole way through. Is this because Mark Williams is a bad actor? Of course not. Is it the writer's fault? I highly doubt that Kloves put pen to page and wrote: "Harry, Tonks, Lupin, and Arthur sit in the living room. Arthur is clutching a pillow." No. This is a case where the director wasn't getting what he wanted from the actors, tried to shake things up a little, got rubbish, said "huh" and moved on because they had a schedule to keep. In GoF, Dumbledore grabs Harry by the neck and yells "DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THAT GOBLET!?" while shaking him. This is not how Dumbledore should act, obviously. Is that because Michael Gambon is a bad actor? He was given a script. The scene was in the script. I assume that Gambon didn't improvise the scene on the fly. If the writer hasn't read the books closely, we can't blame the actors for that. Cuaron proved that the 'Trio' had chemistry. Admittedly, POA falls apart at a couple of points, but they did remarkable well considering that this film comes directly after the Columbus-helmed disaster that was CoS. So, to say that Watson, Radcliffe, and Grint can't act... is a bit of a stretch. To say that they've not found a competent director since Cuaron to take charge of the films, or that the writing has never been great... would be a bit closer to the mark. Sorry for the rant. Best: Toss us between Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman. Worst: Hands down, Devon Murray. He plays Seamus. For some weird reason they write a line for him in every single movie. He is also set on fire a lot. Though, I suppose that's not really his fault. This post has been edited by Dreamteam: Dec 10 2009, 06:21 PM -------------------- When I left you I was but the learner.
