I actually think all the actors are great so I will only mention the 'spot on' and 'trouble visualising'
The ones who are spot on, according to how I read the characters in the books: Maggie Smith, Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, Matt Lewis, David Bradley (Filch), Robbie Coltrane. I ALWAYS see and hear these actors when I read the books (I automatically transplant emerald green eyes onto Dan's looks when I read the books!). I can also visualise them in situations that I haven't seen in the films. eg I can imagine Maggie Smith offering ginger newt biscuits in a stern kind of way. I can imagine her reaction to seeing Harry 'dead' at the end of DH. She does the hand on heart thing when shocked. David Bradley is perfect and even has the quivering jowl! Dan Radcliffe portrays the same emotional 'apart-ness' as Harry, which I think is very evident in the books. Matt Lewis I can really imagine doing his heroics in DH. I can picture the 'frozen scream' in the Acramantula scene in COS just based on Rupert's looks alone.
The ones who have changed or influenced my view of the book characters: Evanna Lynch, Alan Rickman, Jason Isaacs, I never pictured Luna in that way at all, but now I've seen OotP I can't help but see and hear Evanna when I re-read the books. Alan Rickman and Jason Isaacs have just MADE their characters.
Richard Harris AND Michael Gambon - I actually visualise DD as a hybrid between these two with Gambon's energy and Harris's majesty; Harris in DD's more serious mode and Gambon in his eccentric mode.
There are some that I have difficulty visualizing sometimes, although I do like the actors enough to over-ride that: Mark Williams - Arthur is more serious in the books Julie Walters - Molly is scary when angry Emma Watson - Hermione is softer and less sure of herself (plus with very bushy dark hair) Helena B-C - Bellatrix has a certain pulsating haughtiness It's probably because the film-writers have limited the character too much (eg Hermione the Brains) or we haven't seen enough of them but the portrayal that I've seen so far doesn't fit with some book situations so I just can't picture these actors in them at the moment.
Nothing like: Natalia Tena as Tonks- but to be fair she hasn't been in it enough to judge her portrayal.
