When Harry was trying to confirm where Sirius was in OOTP why didn't he just floo to 12GP instead of talking to Kreatcher?
And later after getting away from Umbridge why did the group not floo their way to Mom - Fudge and the others did after the LV/DD fight. I guess the Floo Regulation (Magical Travel?) could have done somthing to only allow Floone Calls but no travel, but it never made sense to me that they didn't try the fireplace first. The floo network was bugged, they had trackers on all fireplaces except the one in Umbridge's office. So if they travelled to the MOM, they would've been picked up on the trackers placed there.
As for talking to Kreacker, well I guess there was no need to travel. Although if he had, he wouldn't have been caught! Maybe he would've been picked up when he used 12GP's fireplace to come back to Hogwarts? But using it as a phone doesn't set off the tracker on the 12GP fireplace? |

I have seen no direct evidence in the books for this, but my best guess is that you couldn't use the Floo network to get in and out of Hogwarts unless the Headmaster made an exception. When the kids came back to Hogwarts after the Christmas holidays it is specifically stated that this was a special one off connection that allowed them to do so. So I assume it was not normal procedure.
If you could travel in and out by Floo powder, even if it was just Umbridge's fire, it would be a pretty serious breach of security. At the very least I expect that the Trio believed that they couldn't do it they never tried. It would have been so much easier to get into the Slytherin common room if the trio could have flooed from Gryfindor's common room to any other fireplace. Or popped over to the Three Broomsticks for a quick butterbeer after a hard day of potions. Cool debate about the Floo Network here.
It makes me think about Sirius's visits to Gryffindor Common Room - were they then condoned by DD? So DD maybe knew and even were in on his visits to give Harry some sense of someone 'in his corner'? It would be cool - but how would that work if it's someone in the MoM in Fudge's control (or 'under' control?) who's overseeing the traffic? -------------------- |

I too had the impression that flooing in and out of Hogwarts was not possible. It fits with the policy on apparition within the school grounds. Also, if one could simply floo in and out of the school that would negate the need for trains and carriages to and from the school because, as we saw in book two, underaged wizards are permitted to travel by floo.
The question of whether or not Dumbledore knew about Sirius's visits to the fireplace is an interesting one. Afterall, JK Rowling has said that Dumbledore knows pretty much everything that goes on inside the castle. Would that include floo calls? And if it does, would Sirius have known about Dumbledore's knowledge of these visits? If Dumbledore did know of Sirius's visits to what extent did he know about what was discussed in these calls? |

I think Dumbledore probably did know about the Floo calls. He tells Harry in GoF that he is not the only one corresponding with Sirius, so I think he probably gave Sirius permission to make those calls to Harry. As for whether he knew what they talked about, I would presume that anything that Sirius thought was of great importance may have been passed on, especially if it was in Harry's best interests for Dumbledore to know. -------------------- "Why do you think they're after us, because we're so awesome? I always wondered why Merope named her son after her father, Marvolo. This post has been edited by CriminallyVu1gar: Sep 21 2009, 12:03 PM -------------------- Harry looked around; there was Ginny running towards him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her. After several long moments – or it might have been half an hour – or possibly several sunlit days – they broke apart.

What happened when Harry Potter was "killed" and found himself at King's Cross Station, with no clothes...and Dumbledore?
I mean, it's never really said exactly what happened there. There was a lot of implied stuff though. -------------------- H O P E |
