where do dementors come from? It said they infest the foulest places on earth... i read SOMEWHERE maybe in gof that they grow out of mold or something.

Human misery. Dementors exist in numbers inverse to (collective) human happiness.

At the close of GoF, we see Dumbledore attempting to push Fudge in the right direction. The second argument he makes is (paraphrased): MoM must send envoys to the giants to forestall their joining Voldemort, as they had done in WW1. The first argument he makes is: dismiss the dementors from Azkaban because, surely, they will go over to Voldemort. Which is exactly what they did. Apparently, they had not done in WW1; if they had, i expect Dumbledore would have mentioned it, just as he did re: the Giants.

It then may be inferred that there were few to zero dementors extant in the Time of Joy between Grindelvald's fall and Voldemort's rise. Roundly, that's a quarter century (circa 1945-1970). In contrast: Voldemort's terror, engendered in WW1, resounded thru the period between Wizard Wars; we see this in all that He-Who-Must-not-be-Named nonsense. Dementors fed on that, and worse.

It's always struck me as odd that Hogwarts in the movies is massive. The tallest tower, or the one they show most could hold all classes and dorms. So if in HBP the halls were crowded as could be, does that mean that pretty much the entirity of Hogwarts is unused?

Well, the movie sets aren't canon, exactly...but if they were:

Hogwarts is magic: the stairs move, .the Come and Go Room changes plan, section and volume as required. It is reasonable to suppose the Castle's outside does not match its inside. That heap of stone may, if it wishes (in a wand-like kind of way), be immense and foreboding without but cozy within.

Exactly, look at the two room (or was it three) flat the modest sized camping tent was able to hold at the World Cup.

ahhh, yeah, i read about that mold thingie quoted by jk and knew they liked misery.
yes i suppose so. In addition, Hogwarts is alive (or at the very least its front doors are) because in POA Flitwick could be seen instructing them on Sirius' face.
