Hi folks,
I created this item, which I call the "Nicolas Flamel Mystery Box," for my wife for Christmas. We submit it for your investigation. ![]() The parcel arrived on our doorstep around eleven pm on the Twenty-fourth. It was addressed to Harry Potter, 12 Grimauld Place, London. It was wrapped in brown paper, and two envelopes from the Department of Mysteries were attached with string. The letters expressed that this box had been in the custody of the Ministry of Magic's Department of Mysteries in the intervening years since the passing of a certain character, and he had indicated that the items were intended for Harry. Now the Department was insisting that Harry come 'round to collect it or it would be sent by Owl or disposed of. Also no-one at the Ministry could manage to open the box, or knew what it contained. The Box was wooden, clad with iron bracing, and sealed with wax and cord. A silver crest bearing the Fleur de Lis was affixed to the front. The box contained a message from a beloved lost wizard to Harry, as well as the collected effects and writings of Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist who discovered the Philosopher's Stone. It also contained the Stone itself, which Harry had believed had been destroyed almost seventeen years ago. This truly was a mystery box....(The story in this mystery box assumes you've read all seven books, so don't spoil it for yourself. But this letter below doesn't contain any spoilers.) ![]() Once the entire box is opened, and the contents read, it all threads together to tell the story of Nicolas Flamel. All of the items and writings are fully documented and can be read here: http://web.mac.com/bruce_wright/iWeb/Bruce...mysterybox.html I hope you enjoy! (Oh, and yes, I may have gotten a couple of Harry Potter trivia details wrong in the stories, but I really REALLY tried to get them all right.) -Dreampunk Maker This post has been edited by Dreampunk Maker: Jan 21 2009, 01:45 PM |

Thanks!
The majority of it is found objects *slightly* repurposed. Old-looking wooden boxes can be found at furniture stores as interior decor items. The chest within the box was something I found in an antique shop, as was the locket box and the flask. The flask is filled with green dish-soap and when backlit with a glowstick, glows green through the little window. I found a christmas ornament with a slow color-changing LED. It's not exactly the same as this one, but pretty close: http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.aspx/app...k.yah.UKGD~U346 They have an LED that sloooowly cycles through different colors. This snowflake is in the gold box, just under the red matte, with a hole in it just under the stone. MAN does that add the magical touch to the stone. They're battery operated, and they work PERFECTLY for a little magical slowly color-changing light. The stone and the locket are Harry Potter replica items sold through the Nobel Collection. The locket is the RAB locket, but I am having it *not* be that locket within my story. The scrolls, which contain messages from Dumbledore, are scroll envelopes I got from World Market. The Panopolis is a marble sphere home decor item I found in a furniture store for 12 bucks, and all I did was draw the magical symbols on it with a sharpie pen. I'd say that the best thing to do would be to go to home decor shops and find handmade items that are inexpensive, feel substantial, and look like they could be from Harry Potter. Then decide the story you want to tell with them. Who's box is this? Where did it come from? I could imagine making a travelling potion's kit that belongs to a certain Half-Blood Prince! I bought styrofoam blocks from a craft store and carved out places that could fit these items in the box. I had to carve it a little larger than the pieces. Then I took some nice fabric and draped it all over that styrofoam, so that it all conformed to the carved out holes. It mounts everything really nicely in the box, and has a custom-made feel to it, but it's really easy to do. |

Here are some pictures of Harry Potter Wands that were inspired by a tutorial I found on www.instructables.com and here is the direct link:
