Breaking off from the Enid Blyton thread :) . Who else reads/collects Chalet School books? I have 58 out of 62 paperbacks and a couple of the original hardbacks. My favourite books are the early ones where the school is in Tyrol in Austria, and I love the book where they have to escape from the Nazis over the mountains. It still amazes me that EBD had such an acute understanding of the political situation at the time WW2 was just starting. The later books where the school moves to Guernsey/England/Switzerland aren't quite as riveting as the early ones, but still lots of fun.

My favourite ones are also the first ones, set in Austria!
My obsession extends to the fact that I insisted we went on holiday to the Tyrol! (I felt like Joey!) Joey is my favourite character, of course, but I also like Griselda a lot. My favourite book is Jo of the Chalet School, where they have the sleigh-ride in Innsbruck and we meet the Robin! -------------------- We Slytherins are brave, yes, but not stupid -- Phineas Nigellus.

Ohhh, you got to go to the Tyrol! Now I'm jealous
It's been such a pain trying to get hold of some of the books, particularly the later Switzerland ones. They're all so expensive because they're out of print. E-bay came in handy, though -------------------- Let go, and embrace your inner Squid ...

Yeah, ebay is great! I think it is the only place! I really ought to save up my money and buy a few more, however! What are the four you haven't got?

I haven't got The Mystery at the Chalet School, but then again, it only comes in the rare double with The Chalet School and Rosalie. And I haven't got The Chalet School in the Oberland, Joey and Co in Tirol, or A Future Chalet School Girl. So I suppose I'm really missing three and a half books, not four

That isn't so bad then!
How many times have you read them? I always tend to start at the beginning, so I've read the first few about 5 or 6 times, but then I've got others I've not even started, because they are really out of context because I haven't got the three leading up or following! -------------------- We Slytherins are brave, yes, but not stupid -- Phineas Nigellus.

I think I read that one ages ago, but haven't read enough of the others to understand it all properly! That's a good idea about doing it location-wise...

There's so many hundreds of characters throughout the series that it's easy to get muddled even when you have read all the books! Plus, EBD had a tendancy to make, er, lots of inconsistency errors from book to book (known affectionately in the fandom as EBDisms). My favourite one is where the father of one of the girls says, "And mark my words it will, or my name's not Adrian Charles Barras!" Then several books later, that isn't his name any more, it changes to Miles Barras!

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad I found this thread... I *LOVE* these books too - I have the lot in paperback and I'm starting to collect them in hardback too... there's a really good forum about them here if you want to check it out.
I love the early books too and I love all the characters (especially young Joey and Frieda), but I also have a soft spot for the triplets in the late Swiss books, especially Con. I have read each of the books so many times I practically know them by heart - they're my ultimate comfort read. With Harry Potter of course!! -------------------- I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
