Chamber of Chat How to

This thread hopes to be a place where you can find everything you've always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask, about the Chamber of Chat! Each post will feature a different feature or part of the CoC and frequently asked questions relevant to that topic. Please check back often as we plan to update and revise as necessary. We're always looking to help out wherever we can so if you have an idea for a FAQ topic, please let us know via PM, feedback form, or anytime on the CoC!

Chamber of Chat - Getting Started

The Chamber of Chat is a graphical, avatar based chat room. However, it's unlike any other chat room you've been to. Take a look at this video for a quick overview!

To begin chatting, you have to first register here. The approval process usually takes 24-48hrs but don't worry if it takes a little longer.

Didn't get your approval yet? Sometimes your confirmation email will show up in your spam folder in your email, so that's always a good place to check when you're waiting. After 48 hours if you have not received approval, please contact us using the feedback form from the CoC website. Let us know how long ago you registered and the email address you used.

Once you've created a name and received approval, you're free to sign in, create a character and start chatting.

When you're on, chatting is easy. Just type and hit enter in the text bar at the bottom type.gif You'll see a control panel on the right like this:

Some of the features aren't active yet (merits, demerits, and money) but we'll update this when they are!

Chamber of Chat - The Website

So what do you need to know about navigating the Chamber of Chat website?

Clicking on Chat Now will allow you access to the world of the CoC. Enter your email address and password, then click on the finger to log in.

Clicking on Help will take you to the Chamber of Chat FAQ page. Hopefully that will answer a lot of questions you might encounter.

News is a great place to keep up-to-date with all the goings on around the chat. There is a section for both Chamber News (added by Mods) and Member News (submitted by chatters)

Contact Us is the link to use if you want to send a feedback form. You can use this if you have a comment, concern, or question. It's an alternative to sending a PM to a Mod through the Lounge.

Discussions at COC
What’s the Difference Between a Discussion and an Ordinary Chat?
A chat in CoC is basically just an online communication between individuals which may take any turn, as people express their various points of views and whatever else is on there mind at the time.

A discussion, however, is all about one topic. Also, the discussions at COC are all leader lead. This means that there is always a leader at hand who strives to maintain direction in the discussion by breaking the main theme down into more manageable pieces through a series of questions, presented to the group one at a time, for the group to ponder and give their points of views on. This way all participants will ponder the same question together, instead of the discussion turning into many side tracks at once, impossible to follow.

Anyone who is interested to discuss is welcome and you don’t have to take part in the entire Discussion, you’re welcome to just join in at any time. smile.gif

Rules for the Discussions
  • If you don’t want to participate go to another room.
  • ALL Spell casting is strictly forbidden. This includes Ennervate.
  • Stay on topic. Keeping to the over-all theme of the Discussion isn’t enough, you should also keep to the current question at hand. For example: Say that we are discussing the Order and the current question is “Do you think they will change Headquarters in No 7?” Then it’s not on-topic to discuss whether Snape is a traitor or not.
  • All of COC’s normal rules apply as usual.
A Few Tips that makes Discussing Easier
Apart from the obvious advice to follow rules, and note the special rules for discussions above, there are a few things that can help improve your experience:
  • Mind the length of a speech bubble! If you have a lot to say about something that’s great! But you will have to divide it into several speech bubbles, because each of them swallows a little less than the line you have to write your reply in.
  • Try to indicate if you have more to say by throwing in a “…” at the end if you plan to continue in another speech bubble. This is hard to remember, but it is good if you do, because it helps the other people around to know that you have more to say.
  • Also, when you start out to write a long reply, it’s good if you quickly throw out a simple “typing” to let the leader know that the silence means that you’re typing and not just being completely uninterested by the question.
  • Finally, mind the slow readers. When many long replies pop up simultaneously, which can sometimes happen, it can be very difficult to have time to read all of them before they expire, so then it’s helpful to copy the line before sending it. That way it can be displayed twice for the slow readers benefit.
Again, these are just tips that you may or may not take to your heart, unlike the rules that you have to keep in mind.
