James, Sirius, Remus and Peter formed a group at school, calling themselves The Marauders (synonyms for marauder include raider, looter, prowler and intruder) suggesting that they saw themselves as daring and adventurous with a disregard for rules and authority. They created the Marauder’s Map, an extremely useful document and an impressive piece of magic by anyone’s standards, which was confiscated by Filch, liberated by Fred & George and is now owned by Harry.

James is shown as a bullying, arrogant, immature person at school, yet he and Sirius could make Madam Rosmerta laugh and Professor McGonagall refer to them fondly as “troublemakers” and “ringleaders”. He later matured enough for Lily to fall in love with and marry him. He owned the Invisibility Cloak that Dumbledore gave to Harry in his first year at Hogwarts and died trying to protect his wife and child. James’s animagus is a stag: strong, powerful, brave.

Sirius was James’s best friend, they were like brothers. At school he was possibly even more arrogant and immature than James (after all he did play a joke that almost got Snape killed). As an adult he goes from being portrayed as a mad, dark, wizard murderer and Voldemort’s right-hand man to Harry’s godfather and benefactor and its their close relationship that leads eventually to Sirius’s death. Sirius’s animagus is a dog: friendly, brave, loyal, he would have died for his friends and risked everything to be near Harry when Peter (Scabbers) was at Hogwarts and when he realized that Harry had gone to the Ministry.

Peter is remembered in PS/SS as “that fat little boy who was always tagging around after them” but was “never in their league”. However, he was clever and sneaky enough to act as a spy for Lord Voldemort, “ratting” out on his friends which resulted in James’s and Lily’s deaths and Sirius’s imprisonment in Azkaban for “murdering” Peter. It is Peter who helps Voldemort to regain his body by donating his own arm and assisting in making the necessary Potion. Peter’s animagus is a rat which matches his betrayal of his friends.

Remus is very different - he’s bright, but in a much more quiet, thoughtful, restrained way although for James, Sirius and Peter he possibly had an air of mystery and allure due to his lycanthropy. As an adult he finds life difficult but is eventually appointed as DADA teacher in Harry’s third year and teaches him the valuable Patronus Charm. Later Remus works for the Order as a spy in the werewolf community. Unlike the other Marauders Remus is not an animagus but transforms, against his will and with each full moon, into a werewolf – creatures known for being vicious and dangerous. Unlike his friends then, whose transformations symbolize their true characters, Remus transforms into a creature whose characteristics are in direct contrast to his own – that of a caring, gentle, kind man.
