"I came into Christianity kicking and screaming. You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen [College, Oxford], night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England." C.S. Lewis, "Surprised by Joy"

Lewis abandoned the faith of his childhood in his early teens. At the age of 31, he returned to Christianity, and embraced it. The Chronicles of Narnia are a brilliant allegorical portrayal of Christian doctrine, and it is this aspect of the books that endears them to so many people.

*What Christian imagery in these two books was particularly attractive to you?
*Do you think the obvious symbolism is a reason that some would choose not to read these books?
*Why would Lewis, a Christian, employ the use of so many mythical and pagan creatures in his stories? (question originally asked by Bombadillo in the Magical Creature thread)
*If Aslan is representative of Christ, do you perceive Jadis as representative of Satan?

I find his conversion inspiring, to think that the man who so reluctantly returned to Christianity eventually said, "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen. Not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. – Is Theology Poetry?

The thing I love about Lewis is that his books appeal to Christians of different denominations. I am sure that we all interpret the symbolism based on our own beliefs, and I look forward to exploring those themes in a diverse place like Leaky. Please remember that these questions are merely a starting point, feel free to add your own thoughts and questions.
