Im sorry if this has ben covered before but i have just discover this

QUOTE
Character names in her books are often clues to their identities or secrets. For example, Professor Remus Lupin is a werewolf. According to myth, Romulus and Remus were the founders of Rome and were raised by wolves. His last name, Lupin, is derived from the Latin lupus, for wolf, and the English adjective lupine, meaning wolf-like. Lupin was converted into a werewolf by Fenrir Greyback, whose name is taken from Fenrir, the monstrous wolf son of Loki in Norse mythology. (His alias, Fenrisulfr, was the basis for Fenris Ulf, the American name for Maugrim in C.S. Lewis's "Chronciles of Narnia".) Sirius Black, who turns into a black dog, is named for the star Sirius, which can be found in the constellation Canis Major - the big dog.

This is from a JK's Biograhy on IMDB, so what does this tell us about Snape?

Probably not that much, since Snape, like Dudley, Dursley, Dawlish and several others are names of towns, and Severus is I think the latin word for severe, which I guess refers to his teaching style so doesn't tell us anything new.

I think very few names in the books can be used as proper clues. Actually, Remus Lupin is the only one coming to mind right now...

Very interesting topic, particularly if we broaden it a bit:

Janus Thickey Ward (St Mungo's)
Janus is the two-faced god for which the month of January. Guess Severus Snape's birth month? And doesn't 'two-faced' have Snape written all over it? One face for Voldemort and one for Dumbledore. Might someone in that ward have something to do with Snape?

Severus Snape
There is the standard 'Severe - us' idea

Irma Pince
The ever present 'I'm a Prince' theory - does Irma tie to Snape? Is this why we never see them interact?

Narcissa
Greek Mythology character - died by being unable to do anything but look at his reflection. Does she care for anyone but herself (or her son, an extension of herself?)

Argus Filch
Argus is a mythological creature with many eyes (one hundred? one thousand? I don't remember). Will we learn he has been 'watching' for something to protect something else? That he prowls the school out of concern for something other than the students? And could he have been involved in 'filching' something? Say one of Voldemort's Horcrux relics?

Alchemy Theory: Black, Albus (white), Rubeus (red)
People can read of that elsewhere

There are many more...but that's all I can remember for the moment. I'm only repeating the work of others so forgive me if they aren't quite right.

What questions should we consider before book 7 is published?

Severus Snape is named after Lucius Septimus Severus, a Roman emperor who defeated the armies of two claimants for the title - Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus on his way to power. He ended up popular with the citizens and established a line of several emperors. The methods he used for his rise to power served as a prime example for Machiavelli's 'The Prince' (a book about how to rise to power in a newly established principality). Severus died near York - which might be where Spinner's End is supposed to be located.

Does this mean Snape will also kill Voldemort and become the next Headmaster of Hogwarts?

You just blew my mind, Oryx. Wow.

What's up with Lucius Malfoy? Is he named after Lucius Septimus Severus too?

That is very interesting, considering Niger corresponds with the colour black, and Albinus corresponds with the colour white. Black = Evil, while White = Good? Evil = Voldemort, Good = Dumbledore? Snape has already killed Dumbledore... Maybe he will also kill Voldemort? Perhaps to protect Harry. Or maybe, to protect Draco.

It was Draco's job to kill Dumbledore, not Snape's. I can see Voldemort getting upset about that, about Draco not proving himself as a Deatheater. Hrmmm... Possibilities. So many theories.

Cannot wait for book 7, I wish it was the 21st already!

I remember reading somewhere that SS was chosen because of the alliterations, making you sound almost like a snake when you say it, and that it was a fitting name for the head of slytherin... plus "Snape" sounds like "Snake"... in addition to it being named after the town...

"Stephen Fry: Now, Snape, we talked about him a little before, there’s something about letter “s”, isn’t there especially with that ”n” with it, you can’t help saying it without sneering or snarling… Snarl, sneer…

JK Rowling: Snake! I could have very easily called him, Snicket instead but it’s a funnier, kinder word so I didn’t.

Stephen Fry: Or sneeze is pleasant and of course and the Founder of the House (at Hogwarts) was Salazar Slytherin - another snaky thing. Snakes feature a lot – is a Parselmouth a real thing or did you make that up?

JK Rowling: Parselmouth is an old word for someone who has a problem with the mouth, like a hare lip."
