Just a few years ago, Daniel Radcliffe had only two movies to his credit that were not Harry Potter. Now as the end of the Harry Potter franchise can be seen on the horizon, Dan is deliberately trying to show the world that he can do more than play a boy wizard. In a few short years he has managed to (in-between Harry Potter movies, of course!) film 2 full movies, perform in a play, and shoot a guest starring role on a popular British TV show. Most of these roles, and the stage play for sure, shook up how the world viewed him.

First, Dan got his feet wet by playing a raunchy wannabe man boy on the popular British show Extras.

Found here in our galleries.
A clip of Dan on Extras may be found here in our video galleries. Warning: PG-13 and up content.

Next he played an edgy orphan in the Australian production December Boys

Here in our galleries.

In the PBS special My Boy Jack, Dan played the very dramatic role of Jack Kipling, son of famous author Rudyard Kipling.

Here in our galleries.

And to top it all off, Dan took the very challenging and high-profile role of Alan Strang in the stageplay Equus by Peter Schaeffer.

Here in our galleries.

This play involves very serious acting and a nude scene, both of which have caught the public's attention. Now Dan has brought Equus to Broadway in his continuing quest to prove he can be more than just Harry Potter. He's getting rave reviews with his debut performance on Broadway, as noted on the Leaky Mainpage here!

What do you think? Has Dan started to prove he has what it takes to go further than Hogwarts? Did you like his other performances? Were they good choices for him? Do you think the world will let him move on after Deathly Hallows part 2? Give us your thoughts! type.gif

Dan's definitely very good, i've enjoyed his work throughout the series. he's all about learning the craft, which i think has made him better and better with each project he's done.

i laughed myself silly during the scene with diana rigg on extras. its good to see that he has a real sense of humor about himself. the 'hogwarts scarf' and cigarette bit was hilarious too.

december boys...well that movie was uneven, unfortunately. cinematically breathtaking, but the story wasn't tight. but i thought the turns dan made were actually very nice and subtle. clearly, it was a big step for him in between gof and ootp. i think it was good for him to play a very understated role. he was definitely the best thing in the movie.

my boy jack is my favorite. his death scene made me cry...and gave me a lot of faith in what he could do in the remaining hp movies. just the way his voice cracked. it was so raw.

i wish i was going to see equus, but it just wasn't possible. from the sound of things though, the role is pushing him further and so hopefully that means he'll push harry further in DH1&2. he'll certainly be prepared for the nude scene on 9 3/4! kidding. ha.

something tells me dan's going to do a really crazy/awesome role right after harry potter's done. as i've said before about rupert, all i really want is for them all to do roles with drastically different haircuts. its not that i don't like their cuts, its just that i know they can't cut their hair crazy ways because it has to have time to grow into something that harry or ron would have. it frustrates me. i know i'm silly. biggrin.gif

I thought Dan did a credible job in My Boy Jack, and it was heart-rending to watch him on the battlefield. cry.gif

I also saw December Boys and frankly thought he was the best thing in it. A quirky movie but worth a look-see if you can find it to rent. Aussie indies tend to be like that, imho. biggrin.gif

The only reason that I bought December Boys was because I wanted to see what Dan's like outside of HP acting. It was a choice between December Boys & My Boy Jack, & I bought December Boys because it was the cheaper of the two DVDs rolleyes.gif
Personally, I wasnt overly impressed with Dan in this movie but, I have only seen it once & probably should watch it again. The other younger actors seemed to me to be as good or better, & Dan seemed almost awkward at times. But, I must watch it again. Also I hope to buy My Boy Jack sometime because most everyone says it's a totally awesome movie & performance by Dan.
I felt that Rupert Grint in Driving Lessons was much more natural. Like after a few minutes I totally forgot that he's Ron, where as in December Boys I was looking at Harry Potter feeling out of place
(but, that doesnt mean I dont like Dan, so please dont hex me lol.gif )

I have to agree with Hagiographer, I liked the other children fine in December Boys, but I really thought Dan was the best thing in that film. His character was much more closed and guarded than Harry, even in OotP which was a different kind of angst. Several scenes were very typical hormonal teenage boy, which I thought were very well done, and a few scenes just broke my heart. cry.gif abandonedboyjon, I too thought it was a nice step for him. smile.gif

EdDecree23, I actually liked the mustache on Dan in my Boy Jack. It helped separate him from Harry in my mind. I was also impressed with Dan in this film. One of my favorite moments had absolutely no lines in it. As Jack walks to a waiting car with his dad, he adjusts his walk to match his father's perfectly. It was so subtle and yet screamed the fact that his wants and desires were tangled up with what his father wanted him to be. Well done, Dan, well done! clap.gif The battlefield sequences were intense, but not over done, which is a hard point to find for some actors so I thought Dan did well there. I always have to have tissues around for those scenes! blush.gif

All of you have really already said everything for me haha.

But, the first thing I seen him in outside of Harry Potter was in Extras and I thought he was funny and did a good job.

Then, one night while flipping through the channels I seen him in My Boy Jack and I LOVED it. I love War movies and I think he did a great job.

Now I haven't seen December Boys or Equus but from the reviews of Equus obviously he's doing a good job.

After Harry Potter is done I think that he will continue doing more mature roles and be more of maybe a 'lower key' actor instead of big Blockbuster movies. If that makes any sense at all haha.

While I really loved Dan in this one I have to say the one I thought was best was the kid who plays Misty. He was perfect. But there were many times that I really thought Dan was fantastic. His scenes with Lucy (was that her name?) in particular were so well done. Just the right amount of bravado and nerves and then that fed into the rest of his character.

I really loved My Boy Jack too. Everyone was so good that the tissues were a firm necessity and the mustache also didn't bother me at all. That whole look was very well done for the time period. He certainly didn't look at all like a modern person trying to look 'in period' but rather really fit in with the whole look. Now I want to see this again, but the only time I saw it was during our memorial weekend on TV and I've never seen it on DVD for sale here. Right, that's a mission for me now lol.gif

I agree, My Boy Jack was quite a sombre tale and heart-wrenching to watch of a boy's desire to fight for his country in the First World War and the tragic consequences that this eventually led to for all the Kipling family. cry.gif It was very well written by David Haig who also played Rudyard Kipling, and I liked how he said in an interview somewhere that he knew Daniel would make the perfect Jack and was delighted when he agreed to take on the role. Kim Cattrall was also good as Caroline Kipling.

I agree with birthday twins that the battlefield and trench scenes were not overdone but came off well on screen. You could feel the tension of the men in the trench waiting for battle. I actually think that Dan managed to pull off the moustache well. lol.gif

I have not yet seen December Boys, but I would like to. I'll see if I can get the DVD sometime soon.

As noted on TLC Main Dan recorded his interview with James Lipton for Inside the Actor's Studio last week, and some of the interview can be read at Pace University's newspaper website.

Quotage --
QUOTE
Several clips of Radcliffe's varied roles were played, including Harry Potter, December Boys, My Boy Jack and his infamous cameo in Ricky Gervais' series, Extras. In the latter, Radcliffe played an oversexed youth who is all too eager to break free of the mold that Harry Potter had cast him in. Radcliffe remarked that the appearance revealed to critics that he wasn't "a complete prat…I think it helped people see that I have a sense of humor." Radcliffe squirmed and turned away from the screen as it played his earlier work, calling the clips "embarrassing." "You don't look back," Lipton aptly observed.

Inside the Actor's Studio will begin airing again on the cable network Bravo shortly, after observing nearly a year's hiatus while they honoured the Hollywood writers' strike, which, as we Potter-film fans know all too well had an impact on the rescheduling of the HBP film. No date has been set yet for the Radcliffe episode's airing.

I think Dan has done an outstanding job choosing roles that will separate him from the persona of Harry Potter. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to see My Boy Jack, but I thought he did a great job in December Boys. I can't say that December Boys was my favorite movie, but I'm not kicking myself for buying the DVD either. I didn't feel that Maps was just a recycled Harry Potter. It was a role that was played by a talented actor and I think Dan did the job quite well. I absolutely loved him on Extras. He was completely hysterical on it and his willingness to poke fun at himself shows what a good sense of humor he has. I would absolutely love to see him in Equus, but that falls far out of my range of affordability, but I love hearing the fantastic reviews he receives. I think Dan will be an excellent actor and 20 years from now Harry Potter will not be the first thing people think of when they hear the name Daniel Radcliffe.

This morning in the Toronto Star there is a review about Equus and Daniel Radcliffe's performance titled "Daniel Radcliffe's more Voldemort than Potter on Broadway".

Article here: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/Theatre/article/532150

In the article the writer, Richard Ouzounian Theatre Critic, states:

"Throughout all of this, Radcliffe holds us breathless with his opaque intensity, and when the much-publicized scene of full nudity finally takes place, it seems right and necessary rather than gratuitous."

"There is potential theatrical greatness inside Radcliffe, although the choices he makes will determine which way it goes. Let's hope he picks wisely. Personally, I wouldn't mind if – say a decade from now – J.K. Rowling came back with a book entitled Harry Potter and the Prince of Denmark, with Radcliffe himself playing both roles."

I just saw Dan on Inside the Actor's Studio and it was definitely THE BEST interview I have ever seen with him. smile.gif

James Lipton does an amazing job of putting actors on the spot and getting them to reveal some of their inner-most secrets, desires and fears. This was no different with Dan. By turns funny, thoughtful and engaging, I was captivated by his candor and enthusiasm for the craft of acting.

We have some clips from the interview, discussed here in the Video Gallery Forum. Definitely check them out, and if you get a chance to catch the entire interview, be prepared to be blown away!

As was mentioned a few days ago on Leaky Main Dan, along with his Equus "horses" participated in the Broadway Cares "Gypsy of the Year" event, raising nearly a quarter-million dollars for AIDS charities! Performing "The Love That Dare Not Speak It's Neigh" you can check out a cool YouTube video with snippets and a short interview with Dan, here! lol.gif

I laughed myself silly upon seeing that YouTube "Gypsy of the Year" clip! lol.gif Who knew he could sing too! I was impressed upon hearing he wrote the lyrics as well.

WierdOne thanks so much for the link to the Equus review, I quite enjoyed reading that. smile.gif It is also nice to see some good press regarding his acting ability.

Hagiographer I missed Dan on Inside the Actor's Studio, aargh! I have yet to check out the clips in the galleries due to the holiday season but I hope to do so soon. Dan is usually quite clever in person, I like his interviews.

Eternity Wish, please tell me you don't honestly think any of us here really think Dan was Harry in real life. tongue.gif But like it or not, Dan's public image is now linked with Harry Potter and probably will be for the foreseeable future. This is why we are discussing how well he is doing (or not doing, depending on your point of view) in stretching his acting skills and showing the world he can be more than just one character. What do you think?

I just saw an interview of Daniel Radcliffe, and he says he would have liked to play Sirius Black, instead of Harry Potter.

Well, I say Daniel can play Sirius Black some day.

Just thinking Harry Potter movie will be remade, letīs think in 30 years... well Daniel would be 50 years old. He would be perfect to play the role of Sirius Black i na remake

That's an interesting thought. In some years time like 30, remake the movies, and bring the trio back in different roles, Dan as Sirius, Rupert as Arthur, and Emma as...um, Molly, yes, she can play Molly (still the love interest of Rupert's character).

Anyway, I need to tie this into Dan because that's what this thread is about. Dan as Sirius...
