Death is very much a pervasive theme throughout the HP series. From early on, we learn about Harry, the boy who lived; the boy who was orphaned and went to live with his aunt and uncle. I wanted to dedicate this thread to the theme of death; it's different aspects; how it affects and how it is perceived by the different characters in the books; and how this premise seems to enthrall readers of all ages.

How has this very real theme affected you as a reader? Has it broadened your scope; do you find yourself imagining how it will affect you?

Is the theme of death as a plot device warranted in a children's book? Will children understand it? Are there similarities between how death is portrayed in the HP series and between other books which have been published; comparisons with authors.

Did Rowling purposefully choose this topic as a center point since this was something she was dealing with in her own life at the time she began writing the HP series?

How has this theme enriched your understanding and enjoyment of the HP books; has it changed your life in any way? Do you find that you compare yourself to the characters and what they go through?

Parents; how has the theme of death affected you; has this opened communication with your own children; I am sure their curiosity will have brought up many questions.

Death affects each and every character in the book; either directly or indirectly; just as it affects those of us in the very real Muggle world.

These are just some proposed questions and food for thought if you will. Please feel free to contribute anything that I might have inadvertently omitted in my opening post. You are more than welcome to bring in your own opinions, queries, and of course complaints as well.

I had an interesting conversation last week with one of my friends who is rapturously engrossed in the HP series (courtesy of me wink.gif ) and she brought up an interesting point, one which I've encountered here in various threads. Do any of you believe that Rowling belittled the concept of death in the series?

I was surprised to hear her thoughts; and she specifically brought up the Mirror of Erised, and how Harry could see his parents, and other deceased family members. To summarize, the Mirror of Erised, in her view, is a magical, two dimensional avenue if you will between the living and the dead, a thoroughfare that mere Muggles can't attain, even if their greatest wish is to see their loved ones. Would you say that the Mirror of Erised symbolizes a mistaken concept of what death really is? (I disagreed with her, but I would like to know how all of you feel smile.gif ).

That's such an interesting question/thought. I don't see it as belittling at all; in fact, I tend to see the after-death type things in the books as emphasizing the pain and finality of death/losing a loved one.

The Mirror has been well-addressed already by others. As Shard said, you can't interact with the images in the Mirror. At most, they are visions which to me would just worsen the sense of loss. It may be comforting at first, but after a while I think it would drive you insane because you could never talk to or touch the images.

With ghosts, not everyone comes back as a ghost, and I would guess you wouldn't have any idea whether or not you would until after you're already dead. I mean, look at Sirius--I'm sure he would have loved in a way to stick around as a ghost and keep helping Harry, but he didn't/couldn't. And it breaks Harry's heart all over again when he thinks for a moment that Sirius might come back, but learns the deal about ghosts from Nick and realizes Sirius is really gone. So I don't think that belittles death--I mean, there's a very slim possibility of being a ghost, and you won't know beforehand it's going to happen.

The portraits are slightly trickier, though I agree with hg1 that it's only the Hogwarts portraits that seem to have real actions/independence/etc. (I think) I mean, I suppose it would make it easier in a way to deal with someone's death if you had a portrait that was kind-of like them, but again, it might drive you crazy after a while. It's still not that person in the flesh. I mean, I was really upset when DD died. And it may be a small comfort to know his portrait is in the office for support and wisdom, but I don't see it in any way as replacement for the man himself. I would still miss him terribly even with the portrait, maybe even more so.

I think all her examples of "life" after death (even things like the priori incantatem scene and the scene in the forest near the end of DH with the stone) show how much we as people wish we could still have the people we love around us after they die, but that we won't ever get them truly back. We have pictures, memories, videos...and there are things in the WW that are more substantial than those...but as live, physical beings, they are gone. Which is something we just have to learn to accept. That's a big message in DH with the Resurrection Stone. People cannot be brought back from the dead (at least, not as their old selves and not without extreme pain and torment), and we should not wish them to be.
