The rich variety of settings, situations and characters found in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has sparked a wildfire in the imaginations of the HP FanArtist community! In this thread we will see this new and exciting art, and discuss how the artists' visions mesh with Jo Rowling's descriptions, and YOUR interpretations.
Makani has some really terrific DH art up on her Acciobrain! artsite. Included is this whimsical look at Luna and Xenophilius Lovegood -- Several FanArtists have been drawn to the opportunity to draw Seven Harrys, like Marta (aka ArtDungeon) does here -- The utter evil that is Lord Voldemort, and by extension, his horcruxes, is a perfect chance for highly dramatic fan art. Leela Starsky shows her vision of the locket/horcrux's final torture of Ron -- Here is Harry trying to comfort Ron after the horcrux is destroyed, by mudblood428 -- So how well do these images mirror what you saw as you read the final Harry Potter book? What matched perfectly, and if you could change (or draw) a DH scene, how would it differ from what we see here? All of them are so excellent. I think out of all of them Seven Harry's and Ron's Horcrux torment are pretty much exactly how I imagined, but all of them are brilliantly portrayed. I adore Xenophilius's face. Makani has a great talent for expressions in all her works. I love the composition in Seven Harry's and the ethereal quality in Starsky's piece. There's so much emotion in Mudblood428's drawing, it's a tender moment well drawn.
I have a few myself, but have yet to upload them to PhotoBucket. They can be found on my DeviantArt account though: harry and hagrid Tonks and lupin Snape and Lily Moody Warrior |

All of these are such lovely pictures...however, it's not quite what I saw (although very similar). I wish I could show you what I imagined...but, sadly, I haven't even been able to sketch those up yet. What I see the most difference in are (spoilers ahead...) the next gen. kids. Speculation-based appearences are just...very interesting to look at.
btw: sulky skrewt: those are some wicked pictures :3 |

All praise to all the artists--so many touching/funny/nostalgic moments. Sometimes seeing someone else's vision actually enhances my own (sometimes not--but the above are really nice).
What I keep looking for, though, is some depiction of Harry as he appears as of "Malfoy Manor" in DH. We're specifically told his hair is down to his shoulders, plus that he has--5 o'clock (+) shadow. I'm pretty sure he shaved once they made it to Shell Cottage, but he would still have been looking the same while digging Dobby's grave, while talking to Bill/Griphook/Ollivander, when talking to Ron and Hermione in the garden while seeing Voldemort taking the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's tomb. Plus, just personally, I pretty much pictured him with the hair from then on: not only have we known how cool he thought Bill and his hair were from GOF on, all his "father figures," male role models--Dumbledore, Remus, Sirius--have had long hair. None of the actual book art picked this up and ran with it, I guess playing it safe & keeping Harry recognizable--but I still think it's been a missed change in appearance that mirrors the "coming of age" in the story itself. -------------------- Dumbledore's Army, Still Recruiting (it helps when people stand up to them, it gives everyone hope) Sorted into Ravenclaw |

I love Makani's fan art. It's so fun to look at.

I really like your traditional painting style, it's really beautiful. My favourite is the 'carry Harry' picture. |

This is a really good point. I don't know however is this is because artist want to keep Harry recognizable, but perhaps because artists are used to drawing Harry one way, as that is how they have drawn him for years. As I'm not an artist I don't' know if this is true, but I know in my head as I read the stories, even though I read Harry described with long hair and such, once I got past that chapter, I again saw Harry in my mind as the short haired version I've had with me for ages now. I do agree that it would be great to see this longer haired version of Harry in some work. -------------------- |

Cheers Hazey, I'm a sucker for trad painting but only because I suck immensely at everything else
felicis2 - that's a very startling observation. Reading DH, I admit I completely missed the visual change in Harry. I don't know why this is. As KimmyBlair pointed out, maybe its something bordering on what I think of as first impressions, for example- when I read about a character, an image forms in my head that sticks, and although that character will inevitably grow emotionally and deepen in personality, that first image that formed in the mind still persists, although physically those characters are bound to change, and why not? It's not just Harry either in this respect - other characters will change physically too, but what is it about clinging to that first image formed in our minds? I wonder if this is why there is not just one accepted visual rendering of a specific character, maybe we're constantly seeking another P.O.V which gives a character that extra dimension, kind of adding more visual impact to the status quo. Definately food for thought. On another note, I'm twitching to do a long haired, stubbly harry for a Dobby burial scene, cheers! |

Just a note : After reading all about a long haired, scrappy looking Harry, I'm tempted to do a parody (because serious art just isn't my thing right now :3). The image I'm getting in my head of him is simply hilarious. Now, if it'll come out on paper will depend...You know what else would be funny to draw? A pregnant Tonks...heh. That I can't imagine...nor have I seen it done yet.

Saying that, I would love to see Harry with v. long hair in front of a pan of lentils in front of The Tent. Maybe Tonks holding Lupin's hand during the birth with Remus howling (at the pain/at the moon). Can't wait to see your stuff Merc. You know, I'm still trying to figure out which one is the real Harry. Is it the one next to Moody, the one adjusting his glasses or the one with his hand on his hip. I can't decide. ![]() This post has been edited by SulkySkrewt: Aug 16 2007, 05:11 PM |

(That particular description was SO specific I couldn't miss it, so it stuck--plus she refers to his hair flying out behind him when they're in the Gringotts cart, so I deduced he really didn't cut it--but on my second reading, I had to consciously make myself hear his & Ron's voices low--NOT 12 years old any more!). -------------------- Dumbledore's Army, Still Recruiting (it helps when people stand up to them, it gives everyone hope) Sorted into Ravenclaw |
