Hey all, I noticed there are a LOT of people who were unsatisfied\upset\angry with JKR for how she ended the series with DH. My first time reading it, I was actually a bit disappointed too. I enjoyed it, but didn't feel it ranked with the other books, what with all their magic and wonder and whatnot.

I began re-reading it the other day to see how it would go, and it has been AMAZING. Not rushing through to finish in x hours (ended up being 12 for me the first time), I'm really enjoying all the intricate details, ironies, and "easter eggs" of enjoyment from JKR. The whole "camping story" isn't as long the second time through, since you're focused on the events that happen (and looking back, there were a ton while they were camping). The whole thing reads brilliantly; it's one of my favorites for sure now, if not my favorite.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks on the matter, whether you've re-read it or not. If you haven't, I highly recommend it.

As a side note, I think many people didn't enjoy the last book because they overhyped it themselves. Not that it wasn't worth all the hype, but with a "whodunnit" type series that Rowling has created, everyone had his or her pet theories. Seeing how Rowling ended things (often disregarding your pet theories entirely or changing them dramatically) left people with a funny taste in their mouths.

Speculators of all things HP took the biggest hit with DH because:
1. There were a ton of loose ends after book 6
2. There was a long time in between books
3. Sites like LeakyCauldron only got more popular with time
4. Once it ended, that was it. Your theories either made it in (low percentage) or didn't, and there's only an extremely small chance that your unused theories will ever be heard from again.

I, for one, disregarded the "Harry is a horcrux" theory entirely because I really, really felt like she wouldn't off Harry. I was half right, as we all know, but that didn't keep me from being a little bitter when we first find out he was in fact a horcrux.

Now that we all know how it all went down, re-read it and see if you can't get past the fact that it wasn't what you expected. Because no matter what you expected, when you re-read it you'll probably find out it was much, much more.

i actually took a few days to read it because my husband and i on occasion do an "outlouder" reading of books to each other and this was definately going to be one of them -from the moment we preordered the book .. i got to read a lot of people complaining about the book ..some of which i agreed with, some i didnt. i wasnt as disappointed with the book as i thought i was going to be based on complaints from others smile.gif but i do have to say that parts of the book feel to me like they are glossed over or just gone thru too quickly with not enough background to them -kind of a "ok i want to hurry up and finish" thing .. the other thing that bothered me was resolutions/answers we were promised that we didnt get .. but i will say this-i did love the book thumbup.gif i loved the way things tied in and as u said, there are so many little treasures tucked into it .. i dont kno that its my favorite - tongue.gif too many others vying for that spot in the series, but i am definately glad i got it and we did enjoy it !

I rushed throught it the first time, staying in the carpark at work until after 7pm!, but loved it (I deliberately didn't take the time to flesh out any theories fully) then i read it again, more slowly & found more things to delight.
now I've started the series over & am in the graveyard of GoF having spotted more things along the way that I didn't notice before!

I was soooooo depressed after reading it the first time that I definately needed a re-read. I was disappointed the first time around and after calming down I chalked it up to being mad that it was over. No more new adventures and that is what I looked forward to. I realized I was pretty ungrateful too because I got what I wanted. Harry and Ginny stayed togther, at least they did in my opinion that wasn't a real breakup, Ron and Hermione got together. Harry lived and so did McGonagall and Ron and Hermione and Ginny and Luna and Neville and so many more I was worried about.

Upon re-reading it I found those little things that made me laugh in the other books and I made myself more familiar with the new layout of the surroundings we were given. I came to terms with the fact that Hogwarts was no longer a safe harbor and that the innocent are going to die. This book is my favorite out of all of them. Yes I wish we could have seen more loving interaction between H/G and R/Hr, but I understand that that wasn't the story and am appreciative for the fact that Harry finally got the normal life he desereved and wanted and that Ginny was able to help provide it. I can leave what happened between the last chapter and the epilouge up to my imagination and be thankful that JKR gave me a wonderful timeless story that I will continue to enjoy for years to come.

I have to say I am not disappointed with the book and I have yet to reread it. Still mourning some of the deaths, I guess. One of the reasons I didn’t enjoy the book was because I was sad it was over, but that passed. Now what I don’t like is that the author wants to fill in the blanks with her interviews instead of leaving up to the reader. I am very grateful she has shared her story with us but what I am left with is a sense is this over or do I have to wait some more. Which is it? But then again it is my fault for being on the forums.

I have just re read it at my leisure on holiday, having blasted through it in about 12 hours first time round. I really enjoyed it as a thriller on the speed read, but i've really been able to appreciate the humour and construction of the book a lot better on the second read. I certainly wasn't disappointed with it, its a fantastic book. I thought the section in the tent went on a little too long, but I think that it is necessary to the story; it wouldn't be dramatically satisfying if Harry found all the Horcruxes in time for boxing day without any struggle or frustration. I was really pleased with the way Dumbledore's character and back story were fleshed out, making him a more real, flawed and interesting character, not just a wise old man, but a character with a past and regrets now. I thought the whole wand ownership/mastery thing was a little convoluted, but on the other hand I like the fact that LV's obsession with attaining invulnerability (possession of the deathstick) meant he ended up shooting himself in the foot.

I think a lot of hardcore fans had a problem with book 7 because so many fans had a very clear idea of what they wanted/expected from the final installment, and anything that didn't closely match their quite specific expectations was doomed to be a disappointment.

Personally, I have rarely enjoyed a book more. I was glad that the action quota had been upped from Half Blood Prince, and I think the humour if anything was sharper than ever (Hermione attacking Ron in the tent! Auntie Muriel! The Lovegood's at the wedding!). I almost wish I hadn't spent the last few years obsessing over the series. The Horcrux locations, and Snape Lily, and so many other details would have probably had a greater impact than they did, but never mind it was still a blast.

Personally, I like the fact that JKR wants to discuss the wider story with us. I am one of the people who really likes to read around a story (yes, I actually did read the appendices to the Lord of the Rings). So I absolutely cannot wait to read the encyclopedia, and find out about the precise shade of the curtains in the Dumbledore's drawing room. Shoot me now.

I am now really looking forward to re-reading the entire series and keeping an eagle eye out for clues.

I did like it first time round, but I missed a lot. I think I should have taken it a bit slower, but at least I enjoyed it as much second time round as I did first.

My Fan Fiction Chapter 3 now up
“I have come here” began Voldemort, his thin lips showing signs of the smallest smirk “to recruit. You” he said, pointing his wand at James “shall join me. You” he suddenly turned to Lily “shall flee.

Agreed biggrin.gif

I think part of the problem is that people were up at 4 am speed reading, and so they didnt catch everything, thus not likiing it.
