i don't understand the problem... in britain its not unusual for lakes and such to freeze one year and not freeze the next......we can have 2 or 3 cold winters followed by much milder ones. some winters you need to wrap up like an eskimo while others you might get away with a couple of layers.

Actually the lake at Hogwarts can't be that big. In GoF Harry and Hermione walk around it 3 times in one afternoon while discussing the tournament. I agree that doesn't mean it would freeze all the time, every year, but it's not a massive lake by any means. Whereabouts does that happen? Harry does however describe it as very large and very deep just after solving the egg clue, so it is probably at least a couple of miles around the edge.If I remember rightly, it's the morning after Harry's name comes out of the Goblet. He doesn't want to go to the Great Hall, but Hermione comes up to the dorm and brings him some toast. They go for a walk and I'm sure it's mentioned that they walk around the lake 3 times. -------------------- "Why do you think they're after us, because we're so awesome? I think it's because we're so awesome!" **** "This exchange marked the beginning of Mr Malfoy's long campaign to have me removed from my post as Headmaster of Hogwarts, and of mine to have him removed from his position as Lord Voldemort's Favourite Death Eater."- Albus Dumbledore |

It's at the start of chapter 20. It's described as a "long walk around the lake", and the next paragraph says they went round 3 times. After that they go to the library for some research. But that's all that happens that day, so it's quite conceivable that the lake is several miles around. |
