Quick personal aside - this case is fascinating, and keeps drawing me in! I just got back from vacation last night, I'm still about 40 pages of posts behind, and instead of doing laundry or grading papers, I'm drinking coffee to combat jet lag and trying to catch up.........I'm getting a great education on copyright law, though, so I'm justifying (*cough*rationalizing*cough*) my time here. I know the feeling CC! I found this thread through Fandom_W**k, which I found through Google. Other forums I frequent aren't interested in talking about it, so as soon as I was caught up with EVERY thread (since Nov. 1st!) I signed up for an account here. My mind was pretty much made up after reading RDR's response, but it's been very educational reading opinions and supporting arguments from both sides. Even though I'm 99.999999% sure my opinion's not going to change, I still really enjoy reading the well-thought-out posts from the fence sitters or from those who think differently than I do. I was hoping this was going to be an "exciting" week, as far as this case goes, but now I have to wait until Spring Break. Oh well. |

I honestly think GVSU is trying to be viewed as more liberal or progressive to attract students other than those from Midwestern Michigan. The reason I see it as a conflict of interest is because the Right to Write fund is helping to pay RDR's legal bills. It just looks sketchy that's all.

Silver Ink Pot, I really don't see a need to disagree here.
I did specify that RDR had been "making asinine statements on their website" not in the court filings. Most of their statements were made before the initial hearing in November. In fact, since attorneys for the defense have taken over from 'cousin Vinny', most of the rhetoric has died away and those comments removed from the site, and that is only to the benefit of the defense. A certain amount of vituperation on either side of the case {any case, for that matter} is expected for both court filings and the court room. -------------------- Every absurdity has a champion to defend it. ~ Oliver Goldsmith What interest rate does your Santa charge? QUOTE And, since this is supposedly about ethics and, as the Center's mandate proclaims: QUOTE QUOTE Women can help move our society to a new code of conduct -- one that nurtures our young, our communities, our governments, the least developed parts of our world, and our planet itself. A Center devoted to the promotion of women leaders and a society of race, gender and ethnic equality. I think Anne Zill needs to find out why SVA can coopt the work of, not just JKR, but all the Lexicon staff. I certainly find it odd that SVA is claiming copyright to what is mostly JKR's creative work, but also to what he admits is 40% the work of his staff, the majority of whom are women. *Is extremely amused by this statement of ethics in relation to the current case* Because, as far as I am aware, JKR is and always had been - a woman!! And a mother. Who is doing nothing more than protecting her own rights and who, through her own creative efforts, has risen to a place of considerable eminence. And when last I read them, her books certainly seemed to be promoting very important themes of race, gender and ethnic equality. According to the Center's code of conduct, shouldn't they perhaps be throwing their weight behind JKR?! Alkari This post has been edited by Alkari: Mar 10 2008, 04:50 PM |

It looks like we've about run out of space here, so I'll go ahead and close this thread. We've just started a new one right here!
